  1. President Biden seems to be Straddling a fine line in trying to keep his campaign pledge of kids back in school in first 100 days. Teachers are not even eligible for vaccines in most states. I have no idea how he can support putting kids back in school before teachers and all staff are vaccinated.

Also, many schools have teacher contracts that stipulate six feet distance. To have all kids back, in most cases, that number goes to three. So far unions have held firm. I’m curious to see if they budge on this one.

    1. they probably will start to budge when teachers start realizing that administrations are seeing $$$ signs of increasing online teaching over in person etc.

  2. Two things to report today:

    1. My latest Forbes piece is on a curious phenomenon, which I’ve discussed before – diametrically opposed Covid-19 mitigation policies in the U.S. and Europe/U.K. at this point in time.

    2. There’s really good news from Israel. Just checked the weekly numbers, and the country has apparently rounded the corner in terms of numbers of new daily cases. They are dropping this past week, finally. Hospitalizations are slowly decreasing. Deaths will follow. With the highest vaccination rate in the world, and strong mitigation in place while the country vaccinates, Israel will be at herd immunity by April.

    1. And the U.S. will be lucky to get to herd immunity just in time for Christmas. 🙁

I believe I heard Biden say “by the end of the year.”

      1. It’s possible sooner. If the variants don’t mess things up, we could see herd immunity by August. I think Biden is trying to lower expectations, which is a good thing. I would rather hear a realist voice than blind optimism, which we heard constantly last spring. “It’ll disappear, like a miracle,” “by Memorial Day,” “by July 4th,” “we’re rounding the corner,” …

        1. I agree. I think Biden is doing an overall good job. From what I’m hearing, some of his stimulus money needs to be better distributed. And …as I said above….he is waffling on the school between the science and the risk to teachers. NPR had had a couple of good discussions in that regard.
