Not All Bad

7:00PM

SUMMARY…
High pressure provided 100% sunshine Thursday with light wind, but this allowed for the typical cooling Spring sea breezes near the coast. High pressure moves offshore tonight and Friday and then a warm front moves into southern New England Friday night and Saturday but fails to make it through the entire region. A couple disturbances moving along this front will bring lots of clouds and a couple threats of wet weather. Timing such threats in this set-up is always tough, but it appears they will take place in the pre-dawn to the mid morning hours of Saturday and again late Saturday afternoon to early Saturday night. During Sunday, the main disturbance will move offshore and enough dry air should work in from the north for at least partial clearing, though some cooling will take place from the north and northeast due to the air flow on the back side of the disturbance, so don’t look for a return to Summer-like temperatures this weekend. If the wind turns enough northeasterly, we may have to watch for some low clouds off the ocean later Sunday or even Monday. By later Monday, the wind should turn more to the south ahead of an approaching frontal system, and this front is likely to bring showers at some point on Tuesday of next week, followed by a return to dry weather during the middle of next week, lead in by a cooler, gusty breeze behind the front Wednesday and a more tranquil day as high pressure moves in on Thursday.

Apologies for the abbreviated update again as I try to fit 2 days’ worth of errands into 1 day. 😉

SUMMARY…
High pressure builds overhead tonight and ends the breezy weather but allows it to be quite cool. Temperatures rebound nicely Thursday with lots of sun. Clouds arrive by later Friday as a warm front approaches. This front will be in the vicinity from Friday night through the weekend and be the avenue for a few disturbances which bring the threat of showers. It’ll be hard to time these threats but this forecast will give it my best shot for now and then adjustments will be made, if needed. A small high pressure area is expected to bring fair weather Monday followed by a frontal system with showers Tuesday.

The Week Ahead

10:02PM

SUMMARY…
The Summer preview dials itself back a bit this coming week. There will be several weather changes. The first is the replacement of the warm air Monday with cooler maritime air behind an advancing back-door cold front from northeast to southwest across southern NH and eastern MA. The leading edge of this may not make it all the way through RI and deeper into MA but the exact limit is not known and won’t be known until it takes place, so understand there may be a sharp temperature contrast in parts of the region Monday. The warm air makes another push back into the region from the southwest as the remains of Subtropical Storm Ana pass southeast of New England and a cold front moves in from the west. This day will hold a shower and thunderstorm threat. By Wednesday, the front will be moving offshore with drier and cooler air moving in, but enough cold air aloft will trigger the development of some diurnal cloudiness and perhaps a few showers. High pressure closer into the region should bring more dominant sun Thursday and Friday. The weekend is uncertain at this time and the weather will depend on the development and movement of some disturbances, so that part of the forecast comes with low confidence and is very subject to change.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…
TONIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Isolated showers. Lows 60-68. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Isolated showers. Highs 65-75 from northeast to southwest across the region in the morning but falling to 55-65 during the day, possibly cooler some coastal areas north of Boston. Wind W to NW 5-15 MPH early then shifting to NE from northeast to southwest across the region from late morning on.
MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. Isolated showers. Lows in the 50s. Wind light NE becoming variable.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny. Isolated showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms. Highs 65-70 South Coast, 70s East Coast, 80-85 elsewhere. Wind becoming SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers. Lows 50-55. Highs in the 60s.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 40s. Highs in the 60s.
FRIDAY: Sunny. Lows 45-55. Highs in the 70s except cooler some coastal areas.
SATURDAY: Increasing clouds. Chance of rain at night. Lows 50-55. Highs in the 60s.
SUNDAY: Cloudy. Chance of rain. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 60s.

Weekend Update

6:39PM

SUMMARY…
The previous discussion holds generally true. There is one change to make, however, and that is to forecast a frontal boundary north of the region on Sunday to slip far enough south to position itself to become a back-door cold front that may invade southeastern NH and eastern MA sometime during Monday. Also, a little more detail can be added for Tuesday, regarding the track of Subtropical Storm Ana, or whatever remains of it, as it may be close enough to bring a period of rain to parts of southeastern MA and RI. The rest of the forecast is generally unchanged and will be updated with a full discussion on Sunday.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…
THIS EVENING: Lots of high clouds region-wide with patchy low clouds in southern coastal locations. Temperatures ranging from 55-60 immediate shore to lower 70s interior. SE to SW 5-15 MPH and gusty.
OVERNIGHT: Low clouds form along with patchy fog. Lows in the 50s to near 60. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
SUNDAY – MOTHER’S DAY: Low clouds and areas of fog to start, then partly to mostly sunny with most low cloudiness lingering across Cape Cod. More humid. Highs 60s Cape Cod and South Coast, 70s immediate East Coast, 80s elsewhere. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows in the 60s. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers especially northern MA and southern NH with fog and drizzle possible in coastal areas late. Lows around 60. Highs around 70 but may turn much cooler in eastern coastal areas during the day.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain Cape Cod. Scattered showers/thunderstorms possible elsewhere. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 70s except some 60s eastern coastal areas.

FRIDAY: Sunny. Lows in the 50s. Highs 60s coast, 70s interior.
SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 70s, cooler some coastal areas.

Aft Draft

5:37PM

SUMMARY…
In came the back-door cold front Friday morning and the cool ocean air along with it over southeastern NH and eastern MA. It has taken longer for the front and somewhat cooler air to push further west away from the coast. In fact, as of mid afternoon Friday, the temperature ranged from near 50 along the eastern coast of MA to near 90 in Hartford CT. Though a difference of nearly 40 degrees over about 200 miles, this is not all that unusual an occurrence for this part of the country at this time of year. Now as we get into evening area of low clouds and fog are coming in from the ocean and this will become more widespread during the later evening and tonight as the marine layer becomes established. This low overcast and areas of fog will burn off in most areas Saturday as the wind turns more to the south, but this southerly wind off the water just south of New England means that the low clouds will be much slower to break along the South Coast and it may never completely clear there. Temperatures respond and warm up inland but less quickly along the coast. By Sunday, a southwesterly wind flow means warmer for most areas except still somewhat cooler along the South Coast and especially across Cape Cod. A frontal system to the north and west of the region is expected to cause showers/thunderstorms in northern New England but none of those will reach southern areas as it looks now, meaning that Mother’s Day will be rain-free across southeastern New England. By Monday, this front pushes a little closer with a slight risk of a spot shower or storm but overall most of the activity should still remain to the west and north. By Tuesday, finally the front swings through as it is kicked along by a disturbance from the west. At the same time, remnant moisture from the first named tropical system of the year, Ana, will be making a close pass though most of its moisture should remain offshore just to the southeast. By the middle of next week look for a return to somewhat cooler and drier weather, with a slow warm-up commencing by the end of the week as high pressure dominates.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…
TONIGHT: Low clouds and patchy fog take over. Lows 47-55. Wind NE to SE 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY: Low clouds and areas of fog give way to sun by afternoon in most locations except low clouds persisting southern RI and south coastal MA including Cape Cod. Highs 58-65 coast, 66-74 interior areas. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly to mostly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 52-60. Wind light S to SW.
SUNDAY – MOTHER’S DAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny South Coast including Cape Cod, partly cloudy to mostly sunny elsewhere. Highs in the 80s interior areas ranging down to the 60s South Coast. More humid. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
MONDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers/thunderstorms possible mainly interior MA and southern NH late. Lows 58-66. Highs 67-75 South Coast, 75-83 elsewhere.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers/thunderstorms. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 70s.
WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Breezy. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 60s.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Lows 45-50 interior, 50s coast. Highs 60s coast, 70-75 interior.
FRIDAY: Sunny. Lows in the 50s. Highs 60s coast, 70s interior.

If You Are Surprised Then You Are New Here

7:29AM

SUMMARY…
Nothing about the weather in the next 7 days will be atypical of past Spring seasons in New England. High pressure brings sun and warmth today with some cooler conditions along the coastal areas, but this will become a much more pronounced cooling especially in eastern coastal areas and even inland somewhat during Friday afternoon when a back-door cold front arrives. The sunshine expected on Friday may be replaced by a low overcast at least in eastern coastal areas by late day or evening. That cool air may remain in place into Saturday before getting pushed away again by a returning west to southwest wind flow, which will strengthen through Sunday, Mother’s Day, bringing another preview of Summer. This continues Monday then comes to an end due to a cold front Tuesday and Wednesday. Some showers and thunderstorms are expected with this front, as early as later Monday, but more likely Tuesday. Any rain will be welcomed as top soils are dry and we also have elevated risk of brush fires across much of southern New England.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…
TODAY: Sunny. Highs 60s South Coast, 70s immediate East Coast, 80-85 inland. Wind W to SW 5-15 MPH.
TONIGHT: Clear. Lows in the 50s, around 60 urban areas. Wind light W.
FRIDAY: Sunshine, may be replaced by late-day with low clouds especially southeastern NH and eastern MA. Highs 60s coast, 70s interior, falling into the 50s eastern coastal areas and 60s interior during the afternoon. Wind light W to NW shifting to NE and increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts from northeast to southwest, especially southeastern NH and eastern MA.
SATURDAY: Low clouds dissipate, sun returns. Low 50-55. Highs 60s coast, 70s inland.
SUNDAY – MOTHER’S DAY: Mostly sunny. Highs in the 80s except cooler South Coast.
MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Isolated thunderstorms late. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 80s.
TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Scattered showers/thunderstorms. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 70s.
WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 60s.

The Warmer Side Of Spring

7:34PM

SUMMARY…
Your long awaited above normal temperature pattern has arrived and will last through the weekend. As is always the case in the Spring, there will be modifications based on locations. A weak cold front settled through southeastern New England Tuesday and a second weak boundary will try to sneak down the coast through Wednesday. At the same time a narrow area of high pressure will sink southward over the region and push a disturbance south of the region overnight and early Wednesday. Cloudiness with this disturbance will be over the region tonight but exit Wednesday morning, and the day turns out quite bright. Coolest air will be along the coast with some onshore wind while it is somewhat milder inland. By Thursday expect high pressure to be centered to the south with warmer air for most areas, the exception being the South Coast and Cape Cod. On Friday another area of high pressure will nose down over the water to the east, and allow for an onshore wind and somewhat cooler air. This cooler influence may linger into early Saturday before the wind flow turns more to the southwest and transports Summery air into the region later in the weekend and very early next week, until low pressure and a front approaches by Tuesday with the threat of showers/thunderstorms.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…
TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows in the 50s with a few upper 40s interior valleys. Wind light SE shifting to N.
WEDNESDAY: Clouds linger southern areas early otherwise mostly sunny. Highs upper 50s to lower 60s coastal areas, middle 60s to lower 70s interior areas. Wind N to NE 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows upper 40s to middle 50s. Wind light W.
THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 60s immediate coast ranging up to 75-80 inland. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.
FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 70s, possibly much cooler coast.
SATURDAY: Early low clouds then sunny. Lows in the 50s. Highs 70 coast to 80 interior.
SUNDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows around 60. Highs in the 80s, cooler South Coast.
MONDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 60s. Highs in the 80s, cooler South Coast.
TUESDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers/thunderstorms. Lows in he 60s. Highs in the 70s, cooler South Coast.

The Week Ahead

3:24AM

SUMMARY…
A strong southwesterly flow will transport the warmest air of the Spring so far into southeastern New England today. Again, as usual, a modifying effect off the cooler water will impact the South Coast. A cold front settles southward across the region early Tuesday and sits just south of the region as a disturbance moves along it. This will bring more cloudiness and the chance of showers. A second boundary will push down from the north Wednesday. This one will not have any moisture with it but may turn the wind a little more onshore on eastern coastal areas before the boundary weakens and lifts back to the north on Thursday. This will allow it to warm back up a little though not to the levels of today. I’m a little uncertain about how the Friday-Sunday period works out at this time, but for now I’ll lean toward the warmer scenario with a southwest flow to start then a shift to a more southeasterly flow later in the weekend with some cooling, and more cloudiness as a disturbance moves in from the west. The end of week and weekend are low confidence and very subject to change.

SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND FORECAST…
TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 50s Cape Cod and Islands, 60s remainder of South Coast of MA/RI and Cape Ann MA, 70s to lower 80s elsewhere. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows in the 50s. Wind SW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Highs in the upper 50s South Coast, 60s to lower 70s elsewhere. Wind variable 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows 48-55. Highs 58-68, coolest East Coast.
THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Lows 50-58. Highs 60-72, coolest South Coast.
FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy. Lows 52-60. Highs 62-72, coolest South Coast.
SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Lows 52-60. Highs 65-75, coolest South Coast.
SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Lows in the 50s. Highs in the 60s.
