Thursday October 31 2024 Forecast (7:21AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 31 – NOVEMBER 4)

Some higher dew point air has made its way into southeastern New England ahead of a cold front, and with winds having been fairly light overnight, some areas of fog formed, dense in spots, with an otherwise mostly clear sky above. Any fog will dissipate early this morning and we’ll see plenty of sun albeit filtered by a lot of high clouds during the day today, and a fair evening for Halloween activities but increasing clouds later on. The most notable aspect of today’s weather will be the warm air in place, with high temperatures making runs at records for the date (from 1946) but probably falling short of reaching them in general. A cold front will cross the region Friday morning with lots of clouds, but any rain shower activity will be very limited, with many areas seeing nothing of any note. It will still be a mild day Friday as we have to wait for a secondary front to cross the region in the evening bringing a cooler surge of air in to start the weekend. High pressure will build in Saturday and stay in place Sunday with dry weather for the first weekend of November. After the high moves away, a warm front will approach on Monday, bringing clouds back along with a rain chance, although as seems to be the case with many of our systems during our current dry regime, that rain chance does not look too significant.

TODAY: Early fog patches dissipate. Sun/cloud mix. Highs 65-72 South Coast, 72-79 elsewhere. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

HALLOWEEN EVENING: Partly cloudy. Temperatures 65-75, coolest South Coast, mildest inland valley areas. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

OVENIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Lows 53-60. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Lots of clouds early morning including a rain shower chance near the South Coast, then sun and passing clouds. Highs 70-77. Wind SW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts, shifting to W.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 33-40. Wind W 5-15 MPH, shifting to NW.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Clear. Fog patches lower elevations especially over ponds, swamps, and bogs. Lows 30-37. Wind calm.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny but patchy high clouds during the afternoon hours. Highs 52-59. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: High clouds increase. Lows 35-42. Wind variable to SE under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Clouds thicken. Chance of rain in the afternoon. Highs 52-59. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 5-9)

Low pressure passes north of our region early to mid period. Warm front struggles initially to go through with clouds, a rain/drizzle chance, and a cool start then eventually warming later November 5. A very mild November 6 with mainly dry weather and a minimal rain shower threat. A series of cold fronts knocks the temperature back down mid to late period but with mainly dry weather. More details to come.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 11-15)

Large scale pattern indications are for some blocking with high pressure to our north strongest and unsettled weather held off to our south most of the time.

Wednesday October 30 2024 Forecast (7:30AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 30 – NOVEMBER 3)

A slug of rainfall moved across the region last night, associated with a passing warm front. While this rain may not have extinguished the brush fires, it certainly helped with their control, and crews should have them largely out by day’s end today in the areas they were most concentrated, particularly Essex County MA. And this is a good thing, because the wind comes up today as we enter a brief but notable warm spell, and continues Thursday, Halloween, where a few record high temps may be threatened, but I do not think beaten. We’ll contend with a lot of cloud cover today which will limit the temperature rise. While more sun will allow a warmer day Thursday, I do think this particular push of warm air and associated atmospheric set-up is not enough to push us to the notoriously warm 1946 Halloween level. This will be in sharp contrast to last Halloween however, when the high was just 50 at Boston. For towns and cities that do trick or treat on Thursday evening, expect a notable but not bothersome breeze, dry weather, and temperatures which ease back from the lower 70s to the middle 60s during the early evening. A cold front waits until Friday morning to pass through the region. While this front brings a rain shower chance, any that do occur will not be beneficial for helping with any remaining fires or aiding in our ongoing precipitation deficit. While Friday will be a mild day, the passing front will lead a cooler air mass into the region for the weekend, which will feature dry weather as high pressure builds in.

TODAY: I-95 belt eastward starts the day with low overcast, patchy fog and drizzle. Abundant clouds / limited sun. Highs 65-72. Wind SW increasing to 10-20 MPH including some higher gusts especially South Coast and hills.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 51-58. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Passing clouds / in-and-out sun. Highs 65-72 South Coast, 72-79 elsewhere. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

HALLOWEEN EVENING: Partly cloudy. Temperatures 65-75, coolest South Coast, mildest inland valley areas. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers overnight. Lows 53-60. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Lots of clouds early morning including a rain shower chance near the South Coast, then sun and passing clouds. Highs 65-72 by midday, but turning cooler from northwest to southeast during midday and afternoon. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 33-40. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, diminishing.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Clear. Fog patches lower elevations especially over ponds, swamps, and bogs. Lows 30-37. Wind calm.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny but patchy high clouds during the afternoon hours. Highs 52-59. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 4-8)

Low pressure heads from the Midwest to the Great Lakes early next week – its warm front approaching but struggling initially to move through, some cool/wet weather is a potential November 4-5. May break briefly into warmth midweek before a cold front sends it back to dry and chilly here. Will work out the details and timing as we get closer.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 10-14)

Large scale pattern indications are for some blocking with high pressure to our north strongest and unsettled weather held off to our south most of the time.

Tuesday October 29 2024 Forecast (7:05AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 29 – NOVEMBER 2)

High pressure provides fair and cool weather for our region today, but after some morning low clouds break up, you’ll notice clouds increasing as a warm front approaches from the west. These clouds thicken up this evening and a period of rain is probable in much of the region, but favoring the northern half for most coverage. However, this will be a brief event, maybe a little helpful in fighting the ongoing fires in the region, but no help in slowing down the building abnormally dry / moderate drought conditions. Behind the warm front we’ll experience a windy Wednesday as the warmer air flows into the region, and this will be with us Thursday, even a bit warmer and still quite breezy. Activities for Halloween evening look like they will take place with rain-free, breezy, and mild conditions (temps falling from the 70s to the 60s). Low pressure passing to our north will drag a cold front through the region during the early hours of Friday, bringing a broken band of rain showers. This system looks progressive and should be moving away Friday morning, with a return to dry weather along with breezy and cooler conditions during the day. High pressure builds in with fair, cool weather for Saturday.

TODAY: Low clouds break up and give way to sun, but sun becomes filtered to dimmed by increasing high clouds from west to east in the afternoon. Highs 55-62. Wind variable to SE up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Cloudy. A period of rain likely. Lows 45-52. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 65-72. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 50-57. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 71-78. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers overnight. Lows 53-60. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

FRIDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 62-69 by midday, then cooling into the 50s. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 33-40. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, diminishing.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind NW up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 3-7)

Dry, cooler weather November 3-4 with Canadian high pressure. A frontal boundary and low pressure waves bring the potential for some rainfall at times in the November 5-7 period.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 8-12)

Overall pattern remains dry. No major temperature extremes indicated.

Monday October 28 2024 Forecast (6:47AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 28 – NOVEMBER 1)

A cold front crossing the region first thing this morning produces a rain or snow shower for southern NH and northern MA. Any flakes will be fleeting! High pressure crosses the region today into Tuesday with fair, cool weather. A warm front moves through the region from west to east Tuesday night, bringing with it an abbreviated rain chance, but leading a warm air mass into the region for midweek, including Halloween on Thursday. A cold front will sag southeastward across the region early Friday, moving offshore by later in the day, bringing a rain shower opportunity, but no beneficial rain as our dry spell continues. It will put an end to the brief warm spell.

TODAY: Sun and passing clouds. Brief rain and/or snow shower southern NH and northern MA until mid morning. Highs 50-57. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, shifting to N and diminishing.

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 25-32 except 32-39 urban centers and immediate shoreline. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunshine, filtered by increasing high clouds in the afternoon. Highs 55-62. Wind variable to SE up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. A period or two of light rain is possible, favoring areas north of I-90. Lows 45-52. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 65-72. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 50-57. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 70-77. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers overnight. Lows 53-60. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain showers during the morning. Increasing sun northwest to southeast afternoon. Highs 62-69. Wind SW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts, shifting to NW.

DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 2-6)

Dry, cooler weather for the November 2-3 weekend with Canadian high pressure. A frontal boundary and low pressure waves bring the potential for some rainfall November 4-5 followed by the return to dry weather at the end of the period.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 7-11)

Overall pattern remains dry. No major temperature extremes indicated.

Sunday October 27 2024 Forecast (7:29AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 27-31)

One cold front moved through the region yesterday. A band of clouds exited the region to start the day, otherwise we saw a sun with passing clouds and a gusty wind, though it was still mild with high temperatures over 60. Today, cooler air has settled in with high temperatures failing to exceed 60. Wind will be a little lighter than yesterday and high pressure will provide another day of fair weather. Another cold front will move quickly through the region tonight with a few clouds, but no precipitation due to a continued lack of moisture. This will lead to an even cooler day Monday, though the gusty breeze that greets you in the morning will drop off later. High pressure moves right over the region Monday night – the perfect radiational cooling set up to send much of the region below freezing for Tuesday morning low temperatures, except some immediate shore locations and urban centers. Tuesday itself will be another nice day, and after the cold start we’ll see a decent temperature recovery during the day. High clouds will be noticed streaming in from the west and northwest as the day goes on. These clouds will thicken up Tuesday night into early Wednesday along with a brief chance of rain. This will be a warm front passing by and will lead to fair weather and above normal temperatures for the middle of the week, and the final two days of October. A cold front will be approaching by Thursday, but the early idea is that any rain shower threat from this system will hold off until after Halloween evening activities.

TODAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts, shifting to W.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 30-37. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts, shifting to NW.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 50-57. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, shifting to N and diminishing.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 25-32 except 32-39 urban centers and immediate shoreline. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunshine, filtered by increasing high clouds in the afternoon. Highs 55-62. Wind variable to SE up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. A period or two of light rain is possible, favoring areas north of I-90. Lows 45-52. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 65-72. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 50-57. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 70-77. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (NOVEMBER 1-5)

Cold front passes with a rain shower chance early November 1, then a return to dry, cooler weather lasting through the November 2-3 weekend. Unsettled weather chance with some possible rain November 4-5 as a frontal boundary and low pressure waves temporarily overtake the area.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 6-10)

Overall pattern goes back to dry. No major temperature extremes indicated.

Saturday October 26 2024 Forecast (6:52AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 26-30)

A cold front will move through the region today, leading an even cooler air mass into our region along with a gusty breeze, but again rainfall will be largely absent from the air mass introduction. What won’t be absent is higher fire danger due to the ongoing dry conditions with gusty wind added. The cool and dry weather will continue into the early part of the coming week as well, aided by the passage of yet another front late Sunday night. This one may have just enough moisture to bring a brief shower of rain and/or snow to southern New Hampshire, but that should be about the limit of any precipitation chances. As high pressure moves across the region then to the east and south of us toward the middle of next week, a temperature moderation will begin. A warm front will cross the region Tuesday night or early Wednesday with some clouds (but again limited a rain chance), aiding in initiating the warm-up.

TODAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 54-61. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts early, but diminishing.

SUNDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. A brief rain and/or snow shower possible southern NH late evening. Lows 30-37. Wind NW to N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 50-57. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, diminishing.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 28-35. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 57-64. Wind variable to S up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Increasing clouds. Slight chance of brief rain favoring areas north of I-90. Lows 42-49. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Early clouds, then sun dominates. Highs 65-72. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 31 – NOVEMBER 4)

Fair, mild weather for Halloween, but a cold front crosses there region late night or early November 1 with a rain shower threat and a switch to breezy, cooler weather. High pressure brings fair, seasonable weather for the November 2-3 weekend. A rain chance exists at the end of the period – watching low pressure to potentially approach from the southwest.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 5-9)

Overall pattern goes back to dry. No major temperature extremes indicated.

Friday October 25 2024 Forecast (7:48AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 25-29)

High pressure brings fair and cooler weather to the region during today. Another cold front slides across the region Saturday morning with some clouds although the rain shower chance seems pretty absent at this point. This front will introduce even cooler air to the region for the weekend, along with a gusty breeze at times, but continued dry weather. Chilly high pressure builds in Monday with more of the same, then the high slides off to the east Tuesday at which time a temperature moderation gets underway.

TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 56-63. Wind NW 5-15 MPH shifting to SW and diminishing.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 42-49. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy with a slight chance of a quick-passing rain shower in the morning. Sun and passing clouds afternoon. Highs 53-60. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy early, then clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 28-35. Wind calm.

MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 35-42. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 60-67. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 30 – NOVEMBER 3)

High pressure shifts to the south and east with fair weather and a warming trend into the middle of next week. Timing of next frontal boundary looks around November 1 with a rain shower chance, then a cool-down going into the first weekend of November.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 4-8)

Continuing to lean dry for the pattern, but still eyeing potential wetter weather to our south should the pattern shift enough to bring it north.

Thursday October 24 2024 Forecast (7:21AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 24-28)

The coming 5 days will be cooler than the previous several days, starting with a cold front cutting across the region this morning with a few light rain showers, and a follow-up front doing something similar early Saturday. Otherwise, dry weather will be the rule. Gusty breezes will be around behind the front today, and a renewed bout of breezy weather will occur over the weekend. Winds settle down with high centers closest Friday and again by Monday.

TODAY: Lots of clouds and a few very light rain showers in the area early, then a sun/cloud mix. Highs 58-65. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts in the evening.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 56-63. Wind NW 5-15 MPH shifting to SW and diminishing.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 42-49. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy with a chance of a quick-passing rain shower in the morning. Sun and passing clouds afternoon. Highs 53-60. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy early, then clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 28-35. Wind calm.

MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 29 – NOVEMBER 2)

No changes. High pressure shifts to the south and east with fair weather and a warming trend into the middle of next week. Timing of next frontal boundary looks around November 1 with a rain shower chance, then a cool-down going into the first weekend of November.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 3-7)

Continuing to lean dry for the pattern, but still eyeing potential wetter weather to our south should the pattern shift enough to bring it north.

Wednesday October 23 2024 Forecast (6:54AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 23-27)

Our dry pattern continues, though there will be some changes in our weather, mainly temperature-related, during the coming several days. Of note is that higher fire danger will be continuing due to the ongoing dryness and more wind in the forecast. We have one more warm day to enjoy today, but the breeze from the south will be picking up ahead of a cold front that will move across our region during the early hours of Thursday. Meanwhile, a storm well offshore to our south and southeast will drift northeastward and by Thursday will be located well to our east. While this system won’t even come close to sending rain our way, it will play a role in dragging cooler air down from the north as we end up on the western periphery of its circulation on Thursday. High pressure builds closer to the region Friday and while it will be a cool day, it will also be more tranquil. Another cold front will move across the region on Saturday, but like its predecessor, this one will also be moisture-starved, and be represented by some clouds and a wind shift rather than any rainfall chances. This will lead the coolest air mass of the season so far into our region for the second half of the upcoming weekend, but with continued dry weather conditions.

TODAY: Foggy areas until mid morning, otherwise a sun/cloud mix, with clouds most concentrated near the South Coast. Highs 67-74, coolest South Coast. Wind S to SW increasing to 5-15 MPH, gusts above 20 MPH in the afternoon.

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. A slight chance of a brief very light rain shower north of I-90 overnight. Lows 52-59. Wind SW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts.

THURSDAY: A sun/cloud mix with most clouds over eastern areas through midday. Highs 58-65. Wind N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts at times.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts in the evening.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 55-62. Wind NW 5-15 MPH shifting to SW and diminishing.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 42-49. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy with a chance of a quick-passing rain shower in the morning. Sun and passing clouds afternoon. Highs 53-60. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy early, then clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 50-57. Wind NW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 28 – NOVEMBER 1)

High pressure slips offshore and low pressure travels from the Upper Midwest through the Great Lakes, putting our region into a warming southwestern air flow for the first half of next week. Around Halloween expect another moisture-starved front to approach with just some clouds, and a switch to slightly cooler weather behind as November arrives.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 2-6)

Previously I’d spoken about having to watch potential low pressure to our south and increased chance of rainfall at some point, but indications are currently stronger for a continued mainly dry pattern in early November.

Tuesday October 22 2024 Forecast (7:30AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 22-26)

High pressure keeps the warm and dry weather going for 2 more days, but a light east to southeast air flow will develop today and a more noticeable south to southwest air flow will become established Wednesday, ahead of an approaching cold front. This front will pass by from west to east in the early hours of Thursday, while at the same time another ocean storm evolves southeast to east of New England. While the front only brings the slight chance of a passing rain shower mainly in southern NH and northern MA early Thursday, the combination of the front and the offshore storm may hold more cloud cover in our region for a longer period of time Thursday, so that day may end up with more limited sun than previously forecast. Friday, high pressure delivers dry, cool weather with more sun. Another cold front crosses the region Saturday, but in the ongoing pattern this front will have little moisture to work with and any rain shower chance is limited. Early call on timing is morning hours Saturday for passage. This will lead an even cooler air mass into the region.

TODAY: Sunny. Highs 68-75, coolest eastern coastal areas. Wind variable to E up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clear inland, partly cloudy coastal areas. Patchy fog interior valleys. Lows 45-52. Wind S under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sun/cloud mix, but most clouds confined to southern coastal areas. Highs 67-74, coolest southern coastal areas. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. A possible rain shower overnight, favoring areas north of I-90. Lows 52-59. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

THURSDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 58-65. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, gusty.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts in the evening.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 55-62. Wind NW 5-15 MPH shifting to SW and diminishing.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 42-49. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy with a chance of a quick-passing rain shower in the morning. Sun and passing clouds afternoon. Highs 53-60. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 27-31)

The dry pattern continues with below normal temperatures to end the weekend on October 27, then a moderating trend early to mid next week as high pressure shifts to the south. Another moisture-starved frontal boundary may bring a brief rain shower threat around the end of the period.

DAYS 11-15 (NOVEMBER 1-5)

November starts with the same pattern October ends with, a westerly flow, a front with limited moisture passing by early in the period. There’s a slight hint that we may have to look to the south for some moisture and a greater rain chance later in the period, but I don’t have a strong feel for this possibility so far in advance.

Monday October 21 2024 Forecast (7:15AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 21-25)

High pressure continues its dominance of our weather through Wednesday, resulting in fair weather and above normal temperatures. A southward shift of the high allows more of a westerly breeze today and with the polar jet stream also a little closer to here, we’ll see high clouds stream across the sky, especially in the northern half of the WHW forecast area, which may filter or dim the sun at times, but also result in a nice sunrise as I write this, and may aid in a nice sunset as well. But it’s a rain-free day with above to well above normal temperatures – maybe even approaching a few record highs at some of the climate sites, so that will be something to keep track of. Additionally, the antecedent and current dry conditions along with today’s warmth and more wind will increase the fire danger across the region, which will remain elevated through the week. What won’t remain elevated most of the week are our high temperatures. They will stay up there tomorrow and Wednesday, but a strong cold front will pass through in the early hours of Thursday morning, and while it will bring clouds and the threat of a quick-passing rain shower, it will certainly knock the region off its temperature pedestal to seasonable to below normal by the end of the week., so get ready to reach for the jackets and warmer clothes again soon…

TODAY: Sunny. Highs 71-78. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 46-53. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 68-75, coolest eastern coastal areas. Wind variable to E up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 45-52. Wind S under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny. Highs 67-74, coolest southern coastal areas. Wind S 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear evening. Clouds arrive overnight with a passing rain shower possible, favoring areas north of I-90. Lows 52-59. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

THURSDAY: Sun and passing clouds. Highs 58-65. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, gusty.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 32-39. Wind NW 5-15 MPH with higher gusts in the evening.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 52-59. Wind NW 5-15 MPH shifting to SW and diminishing.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 26-30)

Dry pattern. Current indications are for a cold front to pass by with a brief rain shower threat early in the weekend (morning of October 26) otherwise dry weather with breezy conditions and near to below normal temperatures through October 27, then a shift of high pressure to the south of the region with a milder trend following this with continued fair weather.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 31 – NOVEMBER 4)

Dry, milder weather may hold to Halloween before we encounter an early November cool down, but only a brief wet weather threat as the dry pattern continues. Maybe a better shot at rain toward the very end of the period.

Sunday October 20 2024 Forecast (7:28AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 20-24)

One final note for sky watchers regarding Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS: This comet is fading in brightness night by night and will really only be easily found (with some aid such as binoculars or night sight on your phone cam) for a couple more nights. We will have clear sky for those who wish to try. The clear sky for that event is part of the ongoing dry and mild weather pattern we have, a result of a large area of high pressure over our region. This will remain the case for another 4 days with sunny, mild to warm days and clear, cool nights. Radiation fog can form over interior lower elevations each overnight / early morning before it quickly dissipates with rising sun. You’ll notice more of a breeze from the west as the center of high pressure shifts south of our region today and Monday, but the breeze will drop off Tuesday as the high noses its way back over the region, and then we’ll get into a light southeasterly to southerly air flow Wednesday as the high center shifts offshore in response to an approaching trough from the west. Our one brief shot at unsettled weather comes Thursday morning-midday (based on current expecting timing) as a trough of low pressure drives a strong cold front our way, bringing the chance of rain showers with it. This day will be less mild than the previous 4, and the start of a cooler snap…

TODAY: Sunny. Highs 67-74. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clear. Radiation fog patches overnight.Lows 45-52. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 25-29)

Canadian high pressure brings fair, cool weather October 25 and 26, and a chilly start and milder afternoon October 27. A frontal boundary crosses the region by early October 28 and may allow a wave of low pressure along it with a rain chance part of that day, before fair weather returns by October 29 with another cool-down.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 30 – NOVEMBER 3)

Overall pattern is still fairly dry looking out into the end of October and start of November, with only a brief interruption around mid period with a rain shower chance. A brief milder spell is replaced by another cool-down.

Saturday October 19 2024 Forecast (7:46AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 19-23)

High pressure dominates the weather for the next 5 days with sunny, mild days, and clear, cool nights. And that is literally about it. Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS remains dimly visible a little higher in the evening sky this weekend but continues to fade from view and will be generally invisible by the end of this forecast period.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 24-28)

Cold front passes by October 24 with a rain shower chance and a temperature knock-down mid to late next week, but high pressure regains control with fair weather mid period and temperatures below to near normal. Late-period may have to watch for some unsettled weather to return.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 29 – NOVEMBER 2)

Fair weather finishes October. Unsettled weather may greet November. Temperatures variable, no extremes indicated.

Friday October 18 2024 Forecast (7:10AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 18-22)

Offshore low pressure exerts limited lingering influence on the weather today with a gusty northeast wind still ongoing over Cape Cod and the Islands, and a bit breezy further up into southeastern MA and southern RI from the storm’s circulation, but the band of clouds has already pulled off to the south and southeast and is gone, leaving all of our region under a clear sky, although some ground fog patches have formed in lower elevations of the interior where winds were lighter overnight. These will dissipate soon after sunrise, leaving us with abundant sunshine during the day today. Our stretch of nice weather will continue through the weekend into early next week, with a warming trend, as high pressure takes full control. The breeze may come up somewhat on Sunday as a trough moves by to our north, tightening up the pressure gradient a little. Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is appearing a little higher up in the western sky each evening now but it is starting to fade and will get more difficult to spot until it fades from view in the coming days, at which point we say bye to it for the next 80,000 years!

TODAY: Sun in abundance. Highs 55-62. Wind NE 10-20 MPH and gusty South Coast and under 10 MPH elsewhere.

TONIGHT: Clear. Radiation fog patches overnight. Lows 37-44. Wind calm.

SATURDAY: Sunny. Highs 61-68. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Clear. Radiation fog patches overnight. Lows 40-47. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Sunny. Highs 65-72. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 45-52. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 68-75. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 46-53. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 65-72. Wind variable to SE up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 23-27)

Dry pattern. The only unsettled weather chance is a passing rain shower chance sometime later October 23 or October 24 with a cold front passing by, based on current expected timing. Temperatures more variable and closer to normal.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 28 – NOVEMBER 1)

Similar pattern though in the larger scale systems may be more dynamic, however pattern still looks fairly dry with only one potential brief interruption from a passing front early in the period.

Thursday October 17 2024 Forecast (7:17AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 17-21)

This morning’s low temperatures show a wide range, which is typical for this time of year under high pressure with light wind, with inland low elevations having dropped below freezing with frost and freeze occurring, while urban centers and immediate coastal areas are relatively warmer, remaining well above freezing, even above 40 in some locations. The aforementioned high pressure area will be in control of our weather through the weekend into the early part of next week with fair weather and a general warming trend. However, the weather in part of the region will be impacted by a strengthening ocean storm, passing southeast of the region, later today into Friday. The impacts from this system will be some cloudiness over southeastern areas, a more prominent northeasterly wind in southeastern MA to southern RI, and some high tide coastal splash-over and minor flooding especially in prone areas of southeastern MA Friday. Rainfall associated with the storm will remain offshore, and the influence of the system will end as it moves further away heading into the weekend. We continue to have good sky conditions for viewing of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, which appears slightly higher in the west southwest sky about 45 minutes after sunset each evening until it sinks to the western horizon. This comet will be starting to dim day by day, so best views are likely the next couple nights – though this can be limited in southeastern areas by clouds associated with the ocean storm.

TODAY: Sun most abundant north and west and more limited south and east. Highs 53-60. Wind N-NE 5-15 MPH EXCEPT 15-25 mph Cape Cod region.

TONIGHT: Clouds linger southeastern MA / mostly clear elsewhere. Lows 33-40. Wind NE-N 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY: Sun/cloud mix southeastern MA / RI. Sunnier elsewhere. Highs 55-62. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 38-45. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 61-68. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Clear. Fog patches low elevations. Lows 42-49. Wind W under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 65-72. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Fog patches low elevations. Lows 44-51. Wind SW under 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 66-73. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 22-26)

Dry pattern. The only unsettled weather chance is a passing rain shower chance sometime later October 23 or October 24 with a cold front passing by, based on current expected timing. Mild early period, cooler later period.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 27-31)

Similar pattern though in the larger scale systems may be more dynamic. Still, the trend is for it to be on the drier side here, again with probably only one brief interruption from a passing frontal system around mid period. Obviously can’t get too detailed this far out and will monitor and update.
