  1. Good morning,

Even though this is the covid page, I am compelled to make a comment
about the violent protesting. I understand completely and I totally support
the protesting and demonstrations, however, I do not support nor do I condone
the violence, destruction and looting. It seems like the demonstrations during
the day have been largely peaceful and conducted in the proper manner, however
as the day turns to night, all hell breaks loose.

    I ask why?

The president want to blame Antifa. I disagree. I believe that most of this
is at the hands of white supremacist agitators stirring up the inciting the crowds.

I am extremely disappointed in MY City. What happened here in Boston last night was thoroughly DISGUSTING!

I blame Donald NAZI Trump for all of this.

    1. Not surprisingly, I absolutely agree. And frankly, if it were largely antifa, he would be on the air. He cannot be on the air because the supremacists are a good part of his base and he won’t anger them. But where the heck is he? How has the president of the United states NOT addressing the nation? Did his twitter finger fall off? Or is he simply continuing to cower in the bunker?

Now that my rant is over. Before supremacists got involved, there were some remarkable signs of solidarity. We saw police kneel and then join in the marches in many cities. We saw that in Boston. And I like to think that is what represents our cities and not the hate of supremacists.

      1. I agree and hope you are correct.
Btw, Mrs. OS has a theory on Trump being carted off
to the bunker and that is staff convinced him of a threat
as a ruse to SHUT HIM UP! What a piss-poor excuse for a country’s leader. My God, there has NEVER been a president this bad. NEVER.

The USA is a RUDDERLESS Ship .

  2. I am not sticking up for Trump by any means but is it possible that Antifa and the white supremisists are one in the same? Even if Anitfa represents the “good guys” I do believe that they do cause trouble as well in a misguided way.

    1. I have no use for white supremacy. But I often wonder if antifa goes to extremes. I don’t know enough about them. But I don’t care who is deliberately disrupting the peaceful protesters…..and they were peaceful…..to deliberately cause problems. They are all just wrong.

  3. Until 9:30pm last night the protests were peaceful, perhaps the largest in the nation (remarkable given Boston’s size and the demographics), and focused on injustice. After 9:30pm it got ugly. I don’t know who instigated it. My gut feeling is that extremists on both sides are to blame. Destruction and looting serve no purpose other than to sow division.

Just as the pandemic was subsiding in strength we got slammed with a senseless death at the hands of a sadistic police officer which triggered social unrest. In turn that social unrest is bound to reignite the virus. We’re in a really bad place as a country.

Regarding Covid-19 our only possible savior may be a weakening virus as the coronavirus may have mutated over time. Italian doctors are reporting this. I haven’t seen any credible, peer-reviewed evidence of this. Until I do, the doctors’ reports don’t convince me. But, coronaviruses do have a tendency to weaken over time. Let’s hope.

    1. I absolutely agree Joshua. I watched coverage of other cities where it was peaceful and remarkably respectful. The media on 5 and 7 did an exceptional job repeating that police and true protesters showed respect and restraint. It was when groups sporting gas masks started to arrive that it became obvious they were there for only one reason…..Violence.

We saw a shoe store with door and windows smashed by rogue individuals. At one point the protesters were trying to put shoes back into the store. And we saw cars run down protesters…reminiscent of Charlottesville. We saw a transit cop trapped in his car and surrounded by rogue individuals clearly terrified.

In all of the horror there was good. I think we need to hold onto that sliver of hope. Protesters in Boston asked police to take a knee. They did to show respect. Around the country we saw police literally join the protesters in their march. In Boston, once protests grew violent, police asked those who’d come earlier to go home.

      I’m sick at heart.

As for the Italian study…a mutual friend was nice enough to share with me. We will see. My hope is it is right. My fear is it will give those who have refused to do what is asked of them will use it as an excuse to further defy caution

And through it all we have absolutely no leadership…although the leadership trump has shown thus far has only added fuel. So perhaps it is best he huddle in a bunker. Dan Rathers comment was 100% correct.

I am sorry for the rants. As is the case with The vast majority, I am past scared and Into terrified for our country. I cry far too often now. I know I am far from alone.

  4. MN gov speaking now. Nat guard will stand down. I’ve only seen him twice but like what I’ve seen so far

    Another positive I hope.

  5. I was just informed that Black Lives Matter will be having a rally in front of the Franklin Park Zoo in Dorchester tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. then March to JP. Just what we “don’t” need. Two more city neighborhoods potentially going up in flames (groan). Why JP??

Ok, ENOUGH is ENOUGH!! It’s now time to stop these “peace demonstrations” and let the process (such as it is) in Minneapolis play itself out. Anyone who still doesn’t get it, never will at this point!

Btw, I live just blocks from Franklin Park Zoo.

Btw, I live just blocks from Franklin Park. Hope I get home in time from work tomorrow. Stay safe JPD as well.

  6. Philip…seriously??? Why JP? Home to a sizeable minority (or one might actually say majority) community.

    1. Also your comment “Anyone who still doesn’t get it, never will at this point!” Well I for one hope we as a nation will “get it”.

      1. I see your point, Keith, but also understand Philip’s.

As a nation we’ve never gotten it. Our policing rules of engagement aren’t clear in many cases. Our endemic racism has always been a blemish, a stain on our society. Other countries have racism, too. Yet, we don’t seem to move forward in our struggle against racism. If anything, we’ve taken several steps back recently.

Nevertheless, I don’t think a demonstration in which agitators will likely hijack the event is a good idea at this point. Certainly not a couple of days after yesterday’s protest. I also think having an event that starts at 5pm (!) is wrongheaded. In fact, I’m surprised yesterday’s even started so late. That allows for the demonstration to drag on into the evening and darkness, which is conducive to bad things happening.

It was really bad in my neighborhood late last night. I didn’t realize how bad until I checked out the area about an hour ago. Smashed large and small businesses, even little convenience stores run by immigrants. Why? Senseless. Cars, just ordinary ones owned by citizens like myself, with smashed windows and flat tires.

        1. I see Philip’s point to a point…but he lost my support a little by the use of quotes on Peaceful Protest….

    2. JP is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city and
a Liberal enclave as well. I do not expect any trouble.

If I hear anything I’ll post.

      1. I hope so. Agree with your assessment of JP. But, Back Bay is liberal, too. Not nearly as diverse, but certainly mixed, especially near Kenmore Square. It would bad enough if the only businesses targeted were high-end. But, the looters hit small convenience stores, little boutiques. Crushing losses for these people who’ve suffered 3 months of no income.

      2. In Philadelphia, the looting was incredibly widespread throughout black neighborhoods. Awful mayhem and anarchy in West Philadelphia.

  7. I will just say that if you were perusing the social media outlets over the weekend i.e. Twitter you would have seen a large number of posts directing the coordination and incitement of violence and most of them were Antifa related. If you search on twitter by #breaking you may run into some recent ones.

    1. Not on Twitter but may join and take a look. Some right wing extremist groups also sometime mimic the actions of groups like antifa to deeper sow the divide. I’m sure that antifa might do the same.

  8. Also one more thing I would like to add out here is that this part of the blog was created to discuss Covid. While I think that in some instances the two issues in the news may overlap I’ll try to keep my posts limited to Covid due to the divisiveness and political rancor that this subject causes.

    1. I have been thinking the same. I understand the tremendous upset. I’m a wreck. But agree this is for covid. I’m the most guilty of all

  9. The medical community is now concerned that all these protests will produce a second wave of COVID-19 later on down the road.

  10. On Covid-19, the good news is the numbers of new cases in the U.S. dropped yesterday and even more today. Counting hasn’t been completed today. But, I don’t think the country will reach 20k. The bad news is Wednesday through Saturday showed an increase in cases. So, we’re kind of back where we were a week ago. Lower numbers of deaths being reported today. Can’t be sure that’s a trend either. I remain hopeful with the caveat that I’m convinced we’ll see a spike in cases as a result of the demonstrations. I realize the protests were outdoors. But, there was a lot of close contact in spite of all the masks.

  11. C-19 for 6-2 is up…

    Reminders:
Derogatory terms are prohibited. Word comments appropriately.
This section should be used for C-19 chat only. This is why it was created.
Discussing the current social situation, specifically protests and rioting, can be done in other places on the net. I’d like to keep this has a weather blog, but will continue the C-19 section related to the pandemic for the time being. Thank you for your cooperation.
