I had to refresh to find this blog. Perhaps, there is another way. It is no big deal as I have WHW links easily accessible on phone, tablet and computer.
There have been large anti-racism demonstrations in Europe. Some looting and vandalism, too, especially in Paris. Believe it or not, the European authorities are actually much stricter about demonstrations generally than their U.S. counterparts. They always have been. You need to apply for a permit to demonstrate, and there are set times for protests, usually from noon to 3pm to avoid issues at night (darkness). And such permits are not being granted during the pandemic. None whatsoever. Yet, people are demonstrating. They’re being told to vacate and disperse. So far the police haven’t intervened much, except tear gas and riot police have been deployed in Paris. Authorities say they understand the message and agree with it, but do not think this is a good time to demonstrate because of the pandemic. The Dutch prime minister is furious about it. He says it’s “short-sighted and stupid to demonstrate without proper physical distance, because it will harm public health.” The PM went on to urge all those who did demonstrate to self-quarantine for 14 days.
I’m actually very surprised officials here have not cited public health as an issue (because it really is a major issue), or at least not prioritized it at all. I’m also surprised officials haven’t urged protesters to self-quarantine. You’re not even hearing that from Republicans.
Have we forgotten we’re in the midst of a pandemic?
Interesting. I believe Baker has mentioned the danger of a covid spike every time I’ve listened to him. The few others ….and I stress few …..have also, including Walsh.
Charges have been filed against the 3 other officers and I believe at least one now is in custody with warrants out for the other two. Charges have also been upgraded for that first officer.
It will be interesting if that now with all 4 officers charged there will be fewer demonstrations and that proper social distancing can resume again.
In a strange way, perhaps these recent demonstrations here and around the world are a good test as to how covid-19 behaves this summer into the fall. Maybe not as horrible as feared by the medical community? We will see in the next few weeks.

Just when we thought 2020 couldn’t get worse with Covid-19, social unrest, and 40 million unemployed, Ebola is making a comeback. I wrote about it in the context of the WHO’s response. https://www.forbes.com/sites/joshuacohen/2020/06/01/ebola-strikes-congo-againunderscores-importance-of-who-in-global-response/#317435cd3752
