It’s good to see the state of Maine off the hotspot list.
It will be interesting to see if the recent lack of social distancing will have any adverse effects on the months worth of progress.
I like this also with previous post and next post at top. I must have missed on weather blog.
Hotspots are now almost all in the south. Florida saw a concerning spike. Texas has, too, as well as North Carolina.
We’ll know about whether the protests have led to more cases within 2 weeks.
The Netherlands is now only allowing demonstrations with relatively small groups of people who observe physical distancing rules. They’re banning demonstrations in spaces like city squares in which physical distancing is virtually impossible. Notably, their issue is not with the protesters, or what they’re protesting (police brutality, racism), but violations of physical distancing. I can tell public health officials there are very worried about a spike in cases, and in fact angry about violations of the rules by protesters. I’m puzzled why officials here are barely saying anything about this aspect of the protests. I get concerned when I see a Dutch health official who’s visibly worried. The Dutch are phlegmatic. They generally don’t show emotion. When they do you know it’s serious.
Joshua…As for the protests here, now that the 4 officers are charged and locked up, hopefully with time the demonstrations will subside. There is an OSU football player that now has Covid-19 due to participation in a protest. Hopefully that is an isolated case. I do wonder though if he perhaps had the virus already before.
I’m not advocating for protests. The problem is that we all know that once they subside, this will be forgotten. We have the attention span of a knat
Although, I was delighted to hear Baker began addressing deescalation training back in November and continues to have teams draw up plans/ideas, etc
Not this time!
I pray you are right.
Baker mentions it regularly. Tough line to cross; however. Protest is an absolute right.
Think of it this way. It will be a good test of the virus during summer months.
Peek-a-boo. Just had to back up once in browser to get here
This is verrrrrryyyyyy nice andverrrrryyyyy easy.
My iPhone is a 7 so no huge screen
My iPhone is a 6. As long as it still works I’m not interested in upgrading for now. 🙂
One negative I have for this format is that the dividing line remains between replies. You can’t tell if it’s a “reply” to the previous message or an original thought.
If you look, you’ll see that on replies, the dividing line is indented to indicate it’s a reply to the previous comment.
Actually from my perspective it’s the message itself that’s indented. The dividing line looks the same.
Is it different on computer vs. iPhone?
I see what you mean now TK.
Still, I hope that the remaining formats will be more obvious in replies.
We’ll see how they look. I know the general layout of each but not the details, so we’ll see the rest of those between Friday & Monday. 🙂
I like that.
Agree, Vicki. Protesting is an absolute right.
It’s just that there is a delicate balance here. I do think there will be a considerable number of cases as a result of the protests. I’m not especially concerned about the vast majority of the protesters’ health, because most are young and will be able to manage if they get the coronavirus. It’s those with underlying health conditions I do worry about, but also and their parents and grandparents. I’m glad Cuomo told the protesters to follow up with testing and avoidance of contact with others in the coming 2 weeks. I wish other officials had said this explicitly. I haven’t heard it.
The numbers this week in the U.S. suggest we’re stuck on another plateau in new cases and deaths. We’re 2 weeks into this new plateau of 20k/1,100 deaths. Not moving down. Sadly, testing is down in many states this week as a result of protests, but also a lack of federal and state direction pushing for testing. Another sign that the Americas is where the virus is hitting hardest: Mexico, which recorded its first day of over 1,000 deaths.
I absolutely agree. I’ve been struggling with how the balance can be met without removing a constitutional right. And I just cannot think of an answer
One of the biggest surprises today is Vermont. 36 new cases today. That doesn’t sound like much. But, Vermont had contained the virus and was only having 2 or 3 cases a day at most. Testing hasn’t gone up. Something happened. Have to keep an eye on that.
Big Vigil for George Floyd right here in JP this evening.
Peaceful and well attended. My son was there and took part in
taking a knee for 8 minutes, 46 seconds.
Moving powerful Eulogy today by Al Sharpton. I was perhaps the most moving speech I have ever heard and I agree with everything he said 110%. Outstanding.
This country had better wake up and in a hurry.
Doc, Received my first Boxed.com shipment today. I ordered on
Monday and received today. Pretty fast, I would say and it included paper towels.
Thanks again Doc for the tip.
JPD…to your point which I hope is true, baker has been working on reform since November or before
Certainly a step in the right direction.
We need similar reform in ALL city and town police departments.
My movie tonight is Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Easily one of my all time favorite top 5. It was filmed in 1967….the year I graduated high school. And not a whole heck of a lot has changed. Maybe now…..I pray

Excellent piece describing the delicate balance of protests and coronavirus. https://www.newyorker.com/science/medical-dispatch/how-the-protests-have-changed-the-pandemic
