I discovered that there was an H2N2 pandemic in 1957. It started in East Asia in February of 1957 and spread to the U.S. by that summer. There were 116,000 deaths nationwide with 1.1 million deaths worldwide.
Well, then I live through that. I can’t remember whether or not I was sick from it. I don’t think so. 🙂
I am very concerned about the cavalier attitude expressed by
way too many in the country, most especially led by the current
administration. This country’s leadership during this pandemic
has been PATHETIC!
1957 was indeed the closest simile thus far. However, the Covid-19 pandemic will surpass the 1957 flu and it won’t be close in terms of numbers when all is said and done. Globally, we’re losing between 5 and 6,000 every day. And, only 4 months in the world is already at 425k and we’re in the 3rd inning, perhaps.
Should have said, we’ve played 2 innings and are about to start the 3rd.
Figures!!! I’ll be stuck in the house for the rest of my life!
Ditto.
As I posted yesterday the former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said states such as Texas and Arizona never really got rid of the first wave it is not a second wave.
Tweet from ESPN Karl Ravech on baseball season
Sources tell me MLB counter proposal today will move towards a season of roughly 70 plus games with a salary percentage on the 80-85 percent of pro rata. Playoff pool bonus. My concern are the recent spikes in COVID -19. Worst case would be to start and stop. Will players move?
Bad combination: Fewer tests, higher test positivity, rising numbers of cases, older population.
Good government officials lead by example. The U.S. is sorely lacking in this respect.
Take a look at the picture of a conservative Dutch government official talking about retirement plans and what they’ll look like in 2021. Don’t read the article. It’s in Dutch anyway. And it’s really dull. But observe the correct physical distance everyone adheres to. This is what I see on ALL European news outlets, by the way; proper physical distancing of all officials regardless of where they are. Also, in terms of protests, government officials on the left and right harshly criticize the lack of physical distancing, NOT the protest movement itself. https://nos.nl/artikel/2337067-akkoord-over-nieuw-pensioenstelsel-meeste-pensioenen-in-2021-niet-omlaag.html
To me, these pictures tell me all I need to know about America’s general attitude toward Covid-19: Indifference and ignorance. And if you don’t think these `lead by example’ photos matter you’re wrong, I hate to tell you. People latch on to this and justify their own lack of physical distancing. It’s appalling, in my humble view.
So the Vice President of the United States violated the law of the state he was visiting? Unbelievable.
I see the distancing at bakers pressers. I think everyone needs lessons in how to wear and handle masks. And rubber gloves for that matted.
Thanks Joshua
And then there is this. You really cannot make this stuff up
First the good news: The death rate in the U.S. is going down. This doesn’t mean a small number of deaths, because we’re still getting close to 1,000 every day. But, that’s more than a 50% decrease from what we were seeing at the end of April. Reasons include fewer people are getting severely ill. Some of this unfortunately has to do with the fact that the most vulnerable among us have already been killed by Covid-19. Other reasons include more testing – especially in the early to mid May period – which detects asymptomatic and mild cases.
Now the bad news. Today’s nationwide numbers confirm a definite spike in cases, in the areas I referred to yesterday, but also throughout the nation. Thankfully, Massachusetts numbers showed a decrease today, but not nearly back to the level of 3 or 4 days ago. While Massachusetts testing has been fairly good, other states like Florida are showing a decrease or stagnant number of tests! As I stated earlier, it’s a really bad combination in places like Arizona, Texas, and Florida: Limited testing, high test positivity, increasing numbers of new cases and hospitalizations (in some cases, ICU, too), and elderly populations.
We had our first take out food in three months. Pizza from a brick oven place that is always outside. I am not a pizza fan but sure was special
We tried to get it in before spikes
Good for you, Vicki. I’m glad you did this.
Thank you. We all sat on deck and enjoyed. Felt really nice
I find some of the discussions in the U.S. on whether a person died from or with Covid-19 maddening and sometimes facetious. People are often arguing from a political stance rather than a clinical one. It’s very disheartening to see people dismiss Covid-19 for political reasons. I thought that as a nation we were better than that, that we could look in the mirror and say, you know what, we blew it, all of us, we failed monumentally. We’re going to learn from our mistakes for the next wave or the next pandemic. Instead it’s either people like Cuomo who can’t stop patting himself on the back. Remember, his late response is partly to blame for NY’s incredible death roll. Or, it’s people like Trump who don’t give a damn.
Images from Covid-19’s epicenter – Brazil. It’s awful, guys, just as it was here in NYC and elsewhere, and as it was in Italy and Spain. If we don’t act prudently it’ll be awful here again at some point.
Without getting into the current political climate….we can’t look in the mirror and say we blew it for centuries
I love this country but we have never been able to look in the mirror. I agree, Joshua, it is so disheartening. And I thought cuomo was great at the start. But when he denigrated the NYC mayor and threatened to fire him, I lost respect.
Food: I’ve been lucky in that being an essential worker I’ve continued to receive a free lunch 5 days a week, prepped by pretty decent chefs! Evenings I’ve done a mix of various things including different take-outs from local places I have been trying to support the best I can.
Covid-19 Test: I have been tested a few times now. All negative. This is become of where I work.
Bruins player: The player who tested + has since tested negative, twice. Not sure why they left that part out.
C-19 for 6-13 is up… I set it up a bit early.

200,000 USA deaths expected by September. 🙁
