    1. Month and a half old story with very little followup that I could find and also could ‘t find any papers on it. I know you asked joshua for his thoughts but wanted to point that out. Also funky that it’s the ministry of defense and not ministry of health putting this out there – unless they publish any scientific papers and have any updates it’s not worthy of delving into because there’s nothing else to look at.

      1. Ahhh did not notice that it is an old story. Thanks and I am always happy for anyone who can help with answers.

  1. Also, I meant to ask what the percentage of deaths in the US is. I’m finding varied numbers

    1. The fact that only a few thousand (6,000) showed up at the rally compared to the tens of thousands expected (19,000+) is, hopefully, a good sign that his popularity is declining. This nation needs to really embrace mask wearing. The sooner we do so, the sooner we can ultimately remove them for good.

    2. Not covid related but check out the newest thing he was KIDDING about if you want to feel sick

      1. Sad thing is, he was NOT kidding as he was dead serious.
That man is SICK. As Sick as they come. He needs to be locked up!

  2. Joshua…Just curious. How is Canada doing in terms of deaths/cases? I never hear about them one way or the other. The only thing I know is that their border is closed to us here. I heard this morning that Russia is currently #3 in the world for deaths. Is the U.S. #1 or #2?

  3. Vicki, thank you for your note yesterday regarding my being cut off from my daughter. I was able to get through to Delta this morning and changed the flight without a fee. If there is no 14-day quarantine (big if) I can see my daughter in October.

Philip, Canada has quietly (surprise, surprise …) done reasonably well. Its daily case load is in the low hundreds. The biggest problem for Canada is … the U.S. Travel between the two countries is of course very frequent. For quite some time that travel has been suspended.

Canada also did very well in 2008-2009 when the financial crisis hit. Canada barely had a recession. It’s an amazingly run country. I’m sure they have their issues, but they pale in comparison with ours.

Now that I’m in a Canadian moment, here’s Canada’s wonderful national anthem (by the way, I love the U.S. national anthem, too, as well as our flag). I find the Canadian, U.S., and British flags the most interesting in the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IyxGO4v0yA

    1. Thanks Joshua. I was under the impression that with the border closed there is NO travel at all between the two countries. Did things change recently?

      1. It is indeed closed. I confused you by saying travel is frequent between Canada and the U.S. I meant to say in normal times travel is frequent.

  4. In the state of Texas.
    Tweet from journalist Tony Plohetski
JUST IN: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says in the past few days, we have averaged more than 3,500 new cases a day and our positivity rate has gone to more than 9 percent now. “To state the obvious, COVID-19 is now spreading at an unacceptable rate in Texas,” Abbott says.

    1. No Sh** dick tracy. Open up too soon and what do you expect.
Same trash in Florida and Arizona.

This country’s response to covid is SHAMEFUL!!! and it starts at
the top with ineffective leadership in the White House.

      1. I just laughed so hard with your first four words that I sprayed the water I was drinking all over my iPad.

        Really….ya think?

        You absolutely cannot fix stupid

Well, not Dr Stupid. He is a fixer 😉

  5. Florida I was reading crossed the 100,000 case mark. I don’t why I keep hearing the potential second wave when clearly a good chunk of the country is not through with the first wave.
JpDave I agree with your comment about the leadership in this country. I feel if better leadership was in place we would not have anywhere near the 120,000 plus people who have died so far from COVID 19.

  6. Monday’s data is always a bit polluted from the weekend. Nevertheless, it’s better than Sunday’s data. It’s telling me four things today:

    1. All across the South, except for New Mexico, numbers of cases are growing at a steady clip, and test positivity is increasing. In most of these, hospitalizations and ICU usage are also up.

    2. The good news is that although hospitalizations and ICU usage are up, they’re not in lock step with case growth.

    3. The death rate continues to slide, nationwide, even in most of the states seeing an increase in cases. This could be due to: A. Median age of those testing positive is much younger. B. Vastly better management at nursing homes. C. Weakening virus.

    4. Death is a lagging indicator, and we’ll have to see later this week and next whether an uptick in deaths follows in the states seeing increases in cases.

Overall, the picture certainly isn’t pretty. I’m bracing myself for an increase in deaths. Yet, for the reasons cited, perhaps the uptick will be muted. Let’s hope.

    1. How do you feel about MA? NY seems to be staying low also and just entered phase two so am interested your thoughts and those of others on these

  7. Is phase 3 set to begin on July 6th?

I hope that phase is where most “everything” opens up.

    1. Grade level. I know many colleges are not opening or will open and then close after thanksgiving for online learning

  8. I know in CT Governor Lamont said last week he wants schools opened in the fall and all grades will have in person learning.

    1. Not staggered? Yikes. I do think All Our governors are working together. I personally believe that is remarkably irresponsible. The governor is MA does not make the decision. But I am sure will report what the final decision is as it would make more of an impact from him than DESE, and the powers that be who do make the decision

  9. Vicki last week Lamont said five days a week in person learning all grades with staggered start times. A detailed plan is to come out this week. I talk to a Vice Principal yesterday about what the governor said and the response was I hope so with all grades returning for in person learning five days a week.

    1. I’ll be curious to see how that works. And the toll it takes on teachers, especially since for some odd reason there is talk of laying off teachers…but perhaps that is just in MA.

  10. I’d love to hear from our teachers re staggered start times.

We had double sessions at jr high after our high school burned when I was a senior. It was a very long day for teachers I knew

  11. Joshua, I posted last night late that I am working with Delta too, as they put one of the 18 year olds in our party on an entirely different flight on their own! We are traveling August 1st. The supervisor promised me they would fix it within 2 weeks! Did you get your schedule change email Saturday?

    1. Yes, indeed. Seems like Delta did all their schedule changes Saturday.

I do hope you can rectify the issue so you can travel together.

  12. Vicki, Massachusetts right now has the lowest reproduction number in the country. I believe it’s at 0.68. That’s really good.

One thing I failed to mention in my reporting today is that the treatment modality for Covid-19 has improved. There are now a couple of treatments available, one of which appears to have a significant mortality effect. And, doctors have learned how to better manage patients.

Curious about the rest of this week’s numbers across the South.
