Sunday July 19 2020 Forecast

8:21AM

DAYS 1-5 ( JULY 19-23)

You won’t find any changes to the forecast posted yesterday, so here’s a quick summary. Yesterday was the first hotter day of the stretch we’re in now, although the dew points did drop off during the day in many areas, keeping it more comfortable than it will turn out during the next 2 days. Heat/humidity increases today and the combination of both peaks Monday, which will also be a day that carries a shower and thunderstorm risk as a weak cold front approaches. This front will take the edge off the heat and drop the humidity back somewhat by Tuesday. A warm front approach Wednesday with more cloudiness and a shower risk, along with increasing humidity, which hangs around through Thursday as a cold front approaches, along with another risk of showers and thunderstorms.

TODAY: Mostly sunny. More humid. Highs 90-97 except cooler Cape Cod / South Coast. Wind WSW 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Humid. Lows 73-80. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Very humid. Highs 88-95. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Party cloudy. Chance of a shower or thunderstorm early, favoring southern MA & RI. Patchy fog. Humid. Lows 65-72. Wind W under 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Less humid. Highs 85-92, except cooler some coastal areas especially Cape Cod. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 60-67. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Variably cloudy. Risk of showers. Highs 78-85, coolest coast. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Humid. Lows 65-72. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms. Humid. Highs 80-87. Wind SW 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

DAYS 6-10 (JULY 24-28)

High pressure brings drier air and fair weather July 24. Warm front / cold front combo brings a risk of showers / thunderstorms and higher humidity for the July 25-26 weekend. High pressure brings drier air and fair weather back by July 27 with a quick return to humidity and a shower/thunderstorm risk at the end of the period about July 28.

DAYS 11-15 (JULY 29 – AUGUST 2)

West to northwest flow aloft, a seasonably warm to occasionally hot pattern but no lasting or extreme heat expected. Occasional opportunities for showers and thunderstorms but drier than average overall for most of the region.

  1. Thanks, TK!

Beverly Airport dew point already 67, Logan 64. If that’s ‘humid’ I wonder what dew points will be on Monday at ‘very humid’. We shall see.

JpDave, I hope you and Mrs. OS do alright through this extra hot stretch.

  2. 81 with 70 DP. Very, very slight breeze. But still nice sitting out with a cup of coffee listening to a mindless but good book.

  3. Thanks TK
BIG TIME STICKORAMA today and tomorrow. It was nice getting that drop in the dew point and being able to sit out on the deck last evening.

    1. True. But, we don’t appear headed for an extended period of heat and humidity. The humidity part may stick around (pardon the pun), but after Monday the heat retreats.

  4. Good grief….so sorry, TK. I launched right into temps and DP And didn’t thank you

Thank you, Sir, for today’s forecast and for every day.

  5. Some of it is due to last night cooling off, relatively speaking, but it’s still impressive, the temp rise per hr has been about 4-6F per hour the last couple of hours.

  6. I’m doing a weeding job in Kingston right now on my hands & knees & I can tell you I’m in tough shape I’m struggling it’s so hot at this early hour . Stay safe all !!

  7. Thanks TK.

Sweltering out here at my daughters double header softball game in Auburn. What a day for this! There is a breeze so it’s tolerable standing in the shade but pretty miserable for the kids standing out in the sun.

Just noticed the NWS Upped the high to 99 in Hartford today. They are at 90 as of 11am with a heat index of 95.

    1. Perhaps a few 100 readings are not out of the question in a few of those locations with the typically warm temp sensors?

  8. Friday evening may end up being the best opportunity regionwide to see Comet NEOWISE. More on that later.

    1. Tk when you can it’s getting close we leave Saturday. Hoping for dry fir plenty of beach time

      1. Best call I can give you so far is what appears in the blog post today. Unsettled July 25-26. Typical summer pattern overall.

  9. Thank you, JPD, for the musical link this morning!
Selena was awesome! I don’t show a lot of movies in class per semester, but I do show “Selena” with Jennifer Lopez after the kiddos are fried from taking the MCAS.

The song on your clip is on my iTunes playlist as is this one:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwZTgDjRLM0

“Como La Flor” (“Like The Flower”) or (“I Eat The Flower”) as a few of my less-successful students might say!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. Yup, I actually know the translation. I had three years
of Spanish and I have retained a fair amount of it.

      Funny story you may appreciate.

Several years back we attended a destination wedding for
      our Niece in Tulum, Mexico.

I had to use whatever Spanish I could muster to negotiate
at a souvenir shop. It worked out OK.
The better story was getting gas for our rental car in Cancun.
I pulled up and had the tank filled. Gas was priced in pesos per liter. I got approximately $25 worth of gas and all I had was a US $50 bill to give the attendant. He gives me back $10 in change. I stuck my hand back out the window and shook my head as if to say not enough. He gave me another $10 and I repeated. Finally he gave me a $5 bill and I was happy.

Amazing how people try to rip off other people. Of course,
it was possible that the attendant wasn’t familiar with the
      currency exchange rate????

My wife knows no Spanish to speak of. We were at the wedding
reception and one of the waiters brought my wife some salt
and instead of saying muchas gracias, she said Beunos Noches.
It was pretty damn funny and all the wait staff had a good laugh for themselves.

  10. It was 91 max here yesterday on my conservative, radiation-shielded, pretty accurate Oregon Scientific.
It’s already 89.4 at 11:52. One more tenth of a degree for Ninety at Noon!!! (I round up!) 🙂

  11. Logan is up to 91 with dp 70 for heat index of 97.
My equipment which is now getting sun, reads 93 with dp 72 heat index of 101.

  12. Currently 94 at Hartford and Windsor Locks and it is not
quite Noon. 100 very well may be in play in those locations.

Logan, I am guessing, somewhere 95-97. We shall see.

  13. I dunno about tomorrow. Both NAMs and the HRRR show Zippo
for convection in SNE anytime tomorrow. Hmmm

  14. I am not sure if anyone mentioned this last week here or not:

In the One More Thing To Add to 2020 and You Can’t Make This Stuff Up categories:

Edmonton, which is slated to host the NHL Western Conference games when the league resumes next week, had a severe storm last week and the storm flooded the Rogers Arena where they hockey games will be played. The flooding will not affect the restart of the NHL, but still…

Also, the Canadian government will not allow the Toronto Blue Jays to fly in and out of Ontario, so Toronto is without a Canadian home for the baseball season. A friend of mine who works with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (the AA Toronto affiliate) tells me that they may play home games in Buffalo (Blue Jays’ AAA team) or in Dunedin, FL.

  15. Mark, that’s going to be a tough day for your daughter’s team. A double-header. I’m sure there’s water and/or Gatorade on hand.

Your daughter won’t forget it. And, you know what, she’ll have positive memories of that “double-header in the sweltering heat,” in part because you’re there to cheer her on.

Brings back memories of watching my daughter’s softball games.

A band called Third World made an album called 96 Degrees in the Shade. Very applicable.

    1. Thanks Joshua. They seem to be fairing pretty well so far. Lots of water and they have a shaded dugout with a nice breeze. I am actually surprised at this wind. It’s a saving grace and I’m barely even sweating here in the shade!

This is her CT Bombers team and they beat Worcester Union 9-0 in the first game and are underway in the second now. She had a nice line drive in the first game that drove in a couple runs so she is happy.

  16. Dave, Always thinking about Mrs. OS on days such as these. Hope she’s coping and staying cool!!!! 🙂

    1. Thanks Capt. It hasn’t been pleasant. The heat and humidity
make her ill every day it is like this. Installed another AC
yesterday. We shall see how the day goes. Worried
about the built up heat this evening and tonight.

  17. Any HD TV/Cable experts here.

All of a sudden last night our TV picture was not totally fitting in the screen as it was missing some on the left and right and also
the picture looked stretched some and not looking so much like HD.

I went to the menu and setting and checked out the picture
aspect and checked every setting to make sure they were
what they were supposed to be. Nothing changed.

I think it a cable issue and not the TV. Streaming program
“appear” to be OK, but I can’t tell for sure. At least it
    looks like genuine HD.

I am going to try disconnecting the cable and wi-fi and let
it sit for a minute or 2 before reconnecting it and see
    what that does.

I vaguely remember having this issue before and it was the cable. Sometimes the cable box gets out of synch with the cable transmission. We shall see.

    Any thoughts?

    Many thanks

    1. I think it is the aspect ratio. Who is your provider. IIRC it is set through your cable box.

      1. Nope. That is the 1st thing I checked. TV had the correct
setting. Even re-set it. No go.

I just unplugged the cable box, the cable and the wi-fi.

Waiting and plugged it back in. So far, it all looks good now.
        I “think” that fixed it.

        Thanks

        1. Ahhh. That makes sense. If it happened on its own it’s usually reset needed. Great news!!

  18. Logan up to 93. An official heat wave no doubt with at least 2 more days to go.

The last time Worcester had a heat wave was 2013. Very surprising.

    1. They’ll get it tomorrow. Not reaching 90 there on Tuesday. I’ve never been going for 90 there on Tuesday.

    1. I am not feeling very bullish about tomorrow. We shall see.
I hope we get some good convection.

    1. 1,000 ft Worcester airport is 92F. What would eastern Mass be if the sfc wind had a more westerly component ……….

  19. todayś 12z EURO at hr 168 (7 days): 18C (850mb temps), 500 mb heights of 585 dm and probably quite humid.

today´s 12z GFS at hr 168 : 12C (850mb temps), 500 mb heights of 579 dm and projects dpś in the 50s to near 60F.

So, either 90F and humid or 82F and comfortable.

We are camping without electric hookup the last week of July. Oh boy, please GFS !!

  20. My equipment read 100 a few minutes ago, which means
we touched 96. Now reading 99 or likely 95 like the airport.

  21. DP 64 at Logan while it is 72 at Blue and 73 at Norwood.
What the bleep is going on with that. Not that I am complaining.
My equipment says DP is 71 which means probably 69. Still YUCK and we are not benefiting from the 64 at Logan.

    1. My Take…
North of this blue line, the wind has a bit more Westerly component and South of it more of a Southerly component.
The more humid air is to the South. The rest of the area
is somewhat drier? Perhaps more mixing from above or downsloping? Whatever, the More Westerly component is
bringing in slightly drier air. YEAH! Click on map to enlarge.

  22. I do not trust the GFS pasted 3 days, I don’t trust anything the EURO is showing past 5. So much changing of so many different features. When one thing is wrong, the entire puzzle is going to be wrong.

  23. I’m reading 97 which makes it 95 here with a 68 DP and a good breeze …of hot air but a breeze nonetheless

  24. NWS Zone & Point forecasts still going with “mostly clear” tonight. Not happening.

  25. Mark, glad your daughter drove in some runs. 9-0 is an impressive win. Bombers is the appropriate name for her team.

I biked today with some friends and it wasn’t so bad because of the wind you mentioned. Sure, it was a warm wind, but better than no wind.
