Down, Then Up, But Staying Dry…

4:23PM

A cold front with only enough moisture for clouds will cross the region tonight and early Friday. High pressure will build in over the weekend with cold air as it moves in and crests overhead. 1. Hi everyone! That storm was crazy. I still have family in connecticut with no power, no gas and no food. My brother said it took 3 hours to walk 1 mile each way to try to get gas in the snow. They had 10 inches down there. They ultimately ended up getting a hotel. My father in law just had a stroke and he too is without power. My wife went down there the other day and got him a generator so he could stay warm. And to boot, his CO detector went off as a result of the generator. While I love snow (an understatement), this storm was deadly and I hope everyone here gets power restored soon. I think we all agree that these snowstorms can be fun but it would be even more fun if peoples lives weren’t adversely affected. Stay warm:)

    1. Quicker evolution of things per model forecasts. I can see that as possible, but for the moment I’ll be slow to change it.

  2. I would bet that we just fall short of 70, say 68-69..
Vicki now that we submitted snow totals can you post them so I can see how far off I am:) I think I was the highest.

    Thanks for the update TK.

    1. Hadi work is nuts catching up. I can easily post them but won’t have my computer up until tomorrow at which time I may forget. Please re- ask if I do.

  3. And I think we still need to re-invite Baileyman. He was huge on WBZ and really enjoyed his thorough, detailed analysis.

      1. I wonder why he would be more interested in remaining on WBZ where people argue vs. this blog where you can have an intellectual conversation about the weather?

        1. I think he may not be posting. I remember on some storms last winter he did not post. I think someone was writing blogs using his name. I suspect that turned him away from wbz blog. I also noticed that you to went away, I am guessing for the same reason. It got real ugly on the wbz post. I hated the snowball guy. And there was one other guy who was just a big and I mean bigtime looser, I can’t remember his name, he was to move some place warm. What was his name guys?

  4. Looking back at Logan, the past 4 months have recorded monthly avg temps above normal. The last month below normal was June, nearly 1F below normal.

This month should be interesting. The first 2 days has Logan at 2.2F below normal and Friday night’s low, Saturday’s temps and Sunday Morning’s low could take that down further. Early next week, with its warmth, should bring the first week of November to around average or slightly above normal. However, there are signs of cold air nearby by mid to late month.

Maybe November will break the 4 month streak of above normal temps.

        1. Not quite related, but the ocean swells today were tall ! I just cant imagine they were leftover from the weekend storm, but may have come from the storm that missed around Tuesday. That must have been a pretty good ocean storm.

          1. Tom please save some fun ocean stuff for January. I can hardly wait to spend a winter month on the ocean

          2. Sounds good. We enjoy the beach also in the winter and try to take walks on the weekends. I do remember one time lasting about 5 minutes though, because we tried to walk on a day that was about 10F with a breeze.

          3. Brrrrr. I think i just felt a chill. My husband is not sure about this. I have a couple of dreams. One is to stay on the ocean in winter. The other is to spend winter at the summit house on Mt Washington. He’s s bit afraid of what next winter will bring!

  5. So how about a get together? Who’s up for it? Give me dates that do not work for people and maybe we can narrow it down that way? I am thinking legacy place in Dedham, off the highway not too far south or north but easy to get to.

    1. Count me in – right now I don’t have anything decisive ’til Thanksgiving. I am guessing it would be during a wknd. so for the nxt. few wknds., so far, I am free.

    2. Sadly I have something every weekend between now and the end of the year and probably right through January. Will someone video???? or take pictures?

  6. These are the snow estimates I have – as always please let me know if yours is not correct or if I missed someone – or if anyone wants to add

    Philip 53.00
    JimmyJames 43.00
    Vicki 38.00
    Rainshine 30.00
    Tom 27.00
    Coastal 79.00
    John 48.00
    Old Salty 60.00
    Charlie 23.90
    Scott 84.00
    Merlin 67.00
    retrac 29.00
    Hdi 82.00
    Longshot 3.00
    Tjammer 55.00
    TK 57.00

    1. oops sorry Hadi – your name is spelled correctly on the spreadsheet – my cursor hit just the right place as I posted

    2. If we average out our prediction it comes to 51.73″ for the season (excluding the 3″ from longshot).

  7. I got lucky guessing the number of 90 degree days right on the nose. Will see how I do with the snowfall for the upcoming winter.
Hopefully the power comes back for the folks that don’t have power across SNE since it is going to be chilly with lows in the 20s across the interior.

  8. Despite my 3″ forecast πŸ™‚ I would like to see some mild 8″ or less snowstorms. I really hope we do not have some major snow dump –MA seems to be having enough bad luck with major weather events, hurricanes, tornados and snowstorms.

    1. Longshot, the least snowfall recorded in Boston was 9.0″ = 1936-37…tough to beat. I wish you had predicted at least maybe like “6 inches” to give yourself a bit more breathing room. I bet Atlanta GA gets more snow in a winter, but probably not by much more.

I am curious though as to what type of pattern we were in back in 1936-37…perhaps a really strong La Nina or El Nino??

  9. Vicki – if we do have a meet-up, I will miss seeing you. Perhaps someday we could meet for coffee sometime when we both are free, as we live near each other?

    1. That would be fun rainshine – I will be sorry not to meet everyone and once a date is set perhaps I can switch some things around – I will sure try!!!

  10. Hi TK…I was just looking at the WBZ blog from yesterday and there were 3 individuals who would really like to join the blog and from what they said, have tried in the past but couldn’t get through “moderation”.

    1. Shreedhar Deshpande – a 14 year old who likes weather (never seen before)
    2. Cat966G – I have seen occasionally before.
    3. Matt Souza – who posts almost every day.

TK I am wondering if you should start taking a few chances with posts from those you don’t immediately recognize as long as the writing is intelligent. I assume if it is a troll you can quickly eliminate that person permanently…right?? πŸ™‚

    1. I am going to be looking into that through this weekend. I would love to get more people on here. I haven’t been to the BZ blog in over a week but I should have a chance to visit it later this evening. I will be away most of tomorrow but home most of Sunday, so certainly by then we’ll make some progress on adding new people.

  11. It’s a good thing that the snowfall numbers are not “test grades” LOL. πŸ™‚

Only Coastal, Hadi and Scott passed! πŸ™‚

  12. Today’s CPC has well above normal temps (as well as above normal rainfall, unfortunately) through the week prior to Thansgiving.

I really wish we could stretch a good 2+ weeks straight of “bone dry” conditions.

    1. I don’t want any snow until after Thanksgiving…December and especially Chirstmas Day is when there should be a nice covering. πŸ™‚

    1. I believe this year is a yr were Boston gets 20-30 inches and Worcester gets 60-70 inches, I think it’s one of those years

  13. Since the 1913-14 winter season, Boston has received below normal snowfall when 0.1″+ snow falls in October.

    October 2011 snowfall for Boston = 1.0″

    1913-14 = 39.4″
    1979-80 = 12.7″
    2005-06 = 39.9″
    2009-10 = 35.7″
    2011-12 = ?????

    1. I based my total on that so if it doesn’t work out I’m planning to take your estimate. I have the power to switch numbers. Hehehehehehe.

Oops just returned from trick or treat in sudbury. Guess the trick spirit got to me

    2. Great stats as always Philip. Maybe this time with snowfall in October Boston will have a above
normal snowfall. I went with 43 inches but as I said back in August I would be surprised if Boston
has more than 50 inches of snow this winter.

  14. I’ll be updating the blog from a friend’s computer later this evening. Sorry for the delay. Crazy busy day / evening!

  15. About 5pm, there were some beautiful cumulus clouds just out over the ocean, fairly tall and certainly releasing precip. Saw the virga, dont know if precip was reaching the ocean. The clouds were glowing orange from the setting sun……On trip home tonight, we saw waves splashing over the sea wall with a very turbulent ocean. This NNW wind is still kind of onshore down here and the waves at high tide were sending a small stream of water right down the road. Quite cold with the breeze this evening !!

    1. Tom I can just picture those clouds. How incredible. I saw some go by here around 3 or 4. They were towering to be sure. Hard to believe a week ago tonight we were waiting for the storm.
