7:25AM

DAYS 1-5 (AUGUST 12-16)

The main axis for firing showers and thunderstorms associated with an approaching cold front is further southeast than I had expected, and makes today’s main threat for isolated to scattered showers/storms from the I-95 belt southeastward, mainly south of I-90 as the heat and humidity hang on. Thursday is transition day to somewhat drier air, but once again it’s to be an indirect delivery of Canadian air by way of the waters of the warm northwestern Atlantic. Although this air’s origin was a little cooler than recent shots of Canadian air so you will notice it being somewhat cooler this time around for Friday and into the weekend before a little moderation is already felt on Sunday. This will be due to high pressure, which should be strong enough to keep unsettled weather to the south, slips off to the east and the wind already starts to go more southerly by late in the weekend.

TODAY: Partly sunny. Isolated showers and thunderstorms, most likely over southeastern MA and RI during the afternoon. Humid. Highs 86-93, coolest South Coast. Wind SW 5-15 MPH but can be variable and gusty near any storms.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog in low lying areas. Humid. Lows 65-72. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Variably cloudy. Less humid. Highs 78-85, coolest eastern coastal areas. Wind variable to E up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 58-65. Wind E under 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 76-83, coolest coastal areas. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 58-65. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 76-83, coolest coast. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 58-65. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 77-84, coolest coast. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (AUGUST 17-21)

Humidity increases and a low pressure disturbance brings a shower risk August 17. A cold front brings a risk of showers/thunderstorms August 18. Generally fair weather under high pressure August 19-21.

DAYS 11-15 (AUGUST 22-26)

High pressure will be the main controller with mostly dry weather and temperatures running above seasonal averages at least to start this period. More humidity and a higher shower risk may arrive before the end of the period.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.

I told my wife yesterday that the timing of the front
would mean that we would likely get ZILCH here in JP.
(Yes I know it is still possible, but more likely to my SE)
I told her the storms for yesterday would die before
reaching us and the storms for today would fire South
and East of us. Let’s see how that plays out.

  2. Just a quick shout out to TK, who quietly slipped in a comment last week that he did not believe this week would bring widespread rainfall to lessen the current dry conditions in SNE.

I believe he is once again right.

  3. Thanks TK.

Another in a series of miserable nights with many more to come until October probably.

Will “Josephine” be a threat for the east coast?

  4. Good morning and thank you TK!
Another classic summer day in New England. .03” in the rain bucket last night, I’ll take every drop of it.
Vicki I’ll be sure to check my email both in and spam box, thanks.

  5. Thanks, TK.

As I drove home from Boston around 2pm yesterday, the thermometer showed 97 as I passed Alewife station. Hoping for better things today!

        1. Agreed !

In terms of sensible weather though, I can´t find a dp under 65F all the way to Burlington, VT and Albany, NY and the 850 mb temps remain 15 to 18C, so, this may only be removing our rain chances and adding more sunshine to our day with less cumulus clouds.

  6. Thank you, TK.

I’m as physically sick today as I’ve been in a while. At this point, I’m crying out “uncle,” you’ve got me, weather gods, I sinned, how can I somehow make it up to you, repent, and get that refreshing air mass I’m so longing for. Looking at the Amundsen-Scott webcam (South Pole) and the 10-day forecast in Alert (Nunavut) does little to alleviate the misery.

    1. Sorry to hear Joshua. I was sick yesterday from the heat and humidity. I feel better today. My wife is beside herself.
She keeps saying I am going to DIE!

We need this weather to GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Dew points are coming down a tad.
Down to 64 at Logan and 67 at Norwood. Still sticky, but far
    better than 72-75.

  8. Radars are devoid of echoes. Now there’s a surprise.
I KNEW we wouldn’t see a drop in the city.
the TV mets kept saying that Wednesday would be the best
best for showers and T-storms. Yeah right!!!!

I told my wife yesterday afternoon that we wouldn’t see
    a drop.

    This is PATHETIC!!!

What do they say about rain forecasts? When in a drought leave it out? This is beginning to get serious. My lawn
    is fried to a crisp!

  9. Dewpoint at Logan is 62.

Rather sad that we have come to that temp as “refreshing”. Heaven forbid if it drops to 58 or 59.

    1. I was just going to post something on this.
It is completely cloudy here. Nothing looks to be of much growth.
All just spread out and flat, but covering the whole sky.
We shall see if it means anything. I doubt it.

  10. Bruins win in 2 OT! A very entertaining overtime period.

It’s taking all day to play hockey games lately! 🙂

  11. Afternoon all!

I got to enjoy the Bruins game in work. Would have much rather watched playoff hockey outside on a beach or something, but what can you do! I’m just happy with the result. And a quick turnaround for these teams for game 2 tomorrow night! Hopefully the Bruins can capitalize on the lift they got from that win and take it to the ‘Canes much earlier in the next game. They got away with getting behind by a goal today, but Carolina is not a team you want to have to play catch up with every game.

I hope anybody feeling ill is feeling better soon. A break from the hotter weather is on the way, which will help those who are sensitive to the heat and/or humidity.

Agree with SAK on the future of Josephine. My daughter has said that if we’re going to get a hurricane up here can’t it at least be named after her? She’ll have to wait another 6 years, and who knows if she’ll even still be living in the US by then, nevermind the East Coast. 😛

JMA, thank you. Very kind. I know I was definitely not the only one who was skeptical about a wetter week when looking out in advance. It was on some models, but as we know, that does not mean much………… Anyway, thank you again. 🙂

  12. I did not see the Bruins game but great start winning a two overtime game. The Lightning Blue Jackets game I was glued to last night. The consolation prize for my Rangers being eliminated they got the number one pick in the draft. The Rangers will be a contender before too long.
Mark will see how far your Islanders go as they are currently tied with the Capitals in the third period.

    1. Great comeback by the Islanders today to defeat the Capitals! I still am having trouble getting back into it. It’s August and with all these midweek afternoon games during the workday, it doesn’t feel like the playoffs. I haven’t even been able to watch a game yet. Hopefully they can keep this up and take it to Washington. A Bruins/Islanders series would be fun!

  13. TK/SAK, what are your thoughts on the weather next week in the Outer Banks? We have rented a house in Duck the 16th through the 23rd. The NWS forecast discussion is not very optimistic with a mid level trough setting up over the southeast for much of next week, PW values >2″ and waves of low pressure riding around it. They are talking for the potential of “inches of rain”.

It doesn’t look nearly as bleak when I look at the GFS. Just hoping the convection is more scattered and we don’t get any washouts! Thanks in advance.

      1. Thanks! It was sort of a last minute change as we had a trip booked to the Turks and Caicos but our resort announced three weeks ago that they were delaying their opening until October so we pushed that back to August 2021. I love the OBX as well and haven’t been there since 2011 so am really looking forward to it. Doing the house rental thing and/or beach/outdoorsy vacations are definitely the way to go this year!

  14. I couldn’t believe the Islanders scored four unanswered goals included in that a short handed goal to win the game. It was not looking good for the Islanders when they were down two nothing.

    1. I just watch the highlights…Washington looked like crap! I’m sure the lack of fans had an impact. Caps would probably have had much more energy with a Game 1 in their building and a sold out crowd.

  15. That humidity boundary has temporarily moved northwest of, at least, eastern Marshfield.

The air is almost indescribable. It feels like it weighs 100 pounds and I’ll guess our dp is about 74 or 75F.

    1. Allergies are not helping either. And I can’t complain because I have AC. I did try to sit out but not pleasant. Although I am having sciatica trouble for first time and that doesn’t help

  16. Tom it has been a great start to the first round of these playoffs. The 5 Overtime thriller between the Lightning and Blue Jackets kicked off the second round. It was the fourth longest playoff game in NHL history and the Blue Jackets goaltender recorded the most saves ever in a postseason game.

  17. Mark…

As we are dry, they look showery. Not the best forecast for down there, actually.

I really hope the Islanders win that series.

    1. Well that ain’t encouraging! I can take showers from time to time, just hoping we get some decent periods of weather mixed in and we don’t have any washouts. Thanks.

And I am cautiously optimistic about the islanders….a game 2 win would be huge as it would really put them in the drivers seat.
