Looks like a 40k new cases and 1,200 new deaths day. When you consider that these figures are relatively `good’ for a Tuesday this summer you know we’ve had and continue to have a raging pandemic on our hands.
Something doesn’t compute with the restrictions MA has placed on RI. RI’s 7-day test positivity rate is lower than MA (1.6% compared to 2.1%). RI testing rate is the best in the country and nearly twice MA. It does have more cases per million people than MA. But that’s almost to be expected given that it tests much more. There is a kernel of truth to what Trump said – if you test more you’ll see more cases.
In any case, I have several friends in RI and I freely admit I have violated the quarantine rule and will do so again tomorrow when I take the day off to go bike riding in there. This does not mean I’m gathering in groups larger than 3 people! And, I’ll be masked and properly distanced. I just wish Baker and other governors would have a more evidence-based policy vis-a-vis RI. The state had (past tense) a brief spike in test positivity at the end of July and beginning of this month, but now has lower test positivity than MA, and it’s been that way for close to 2 weeks! Plus they test much more than MA.
