Vicki, Philip, Mama Mia, you asked about the homeless. Many have tested positive in several studies conducted in U.S. cities early in the pandemic. Some have died. Obviously, contact tracing is very difficult for this group.
Homelessness and illness co hand in hand. They’re a vulnerable group. Often, they look much older than they are, because their bodies have aged being exposed to the elements and various diseases and conditions.
Patriots have another positive test, and possibly more to come. Game has been postponed “indefinitely.” I must say, I’m not liking the looks of this as far as the chances of the NFL succeeding this year. NBA and NHL bubbled up. Their seasons will both be completed once the NBA Finals are done this week. MLB, despite a rocky start, has done very well. I believe it will also finish up the season in spite of not being in a bubble. But, my concern is the NFL has not taken this seriously.
Thanks Joshua. The homeless were the first I thought of as soon as this pandemic hit. They are the most vulnerable for the reasons you stated. I see them downtown in groups sitting on park benches or wherever so I thought perhaps, in a roundabout way, developed herd immunity. Obviously I am mistaken. At Back Bay Station all seating areas inside the concourse and outside have been roped off (yellow tape) since the beginning where the homeless traditionally sit and lie around. A very wise move by the city/MBTA/Amtrak.
Patriots game vs. Broncos will be played next Sunday, their original bye week. Well, at least we get to play on a “Sunday” again.
Philip, I took the commuter rail a couple of weeks ago from Back Bay station. I saw many homeless people in and around the station. It appeared the yellow tape you’re referring to had been removed, as I saw several sleeping where passengers would normally sit.
I’m NOT an epidemiologist. But, my guess is homeless people have experienced many infections, so they may build up more T cell cross-reactivity than others.

If you want to read a very informative article about how China handled the coronavirus outbreak, read this piece by Peter Hessler. Hessler is an American who lives and works in China. He explains how China eradicated the virus (draconian measures that certainly worked), but also how the government initially tried to suppress information on the spread of the virus. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/10/12/nine-days-in-wuhan-the-ground-zero-of-the-coronavirus-pandemic
I don’t think the U.S. would have ever tolerated a real lockdown, like the one in China, or even the one in New Zealand. But, there’s no doubt at this point that it worked.
China is not only roaring back. It’s racing ahead of its competitors on many fronts.
Good article, Joshua. Thank you. Chile also had a complete lockdown. And I agree that the US would not tolerate it. Odd, isn’t it. We demand life returns to normal, but we refuse to do what has been proven to work in order to reach that goal.
Mama, I thought of you when I read this. In addition to the program giving the homeless a leg up, it also puts money back into the economy. We know that 70% of the the economy is Not driven by the wealthy but by the average person.
I find it interesting that Trump continues to brag as to how much he is “cured” of the virus and how “wonderful” he feels, etc, but not ONE verification from any of his doctors. Only the word of POTUS…fwiw (not much).
I have a bad feeling that in the coming weeks up to election time, POTUS will be feeling some effects once again.
And how is FLOTUS doing lately? All I can say is that this is the “strangest” and most secretive administration in Presidential history imho.
If the dexamethasone is a 10-day taper, he has not finished the course. IIRC the doctor said he began last Sunday. Even if it were last Saturday, he would not take his last pill until today.
My concern is that he will start to have symptoms return and become another in a series of “Long-Haulers”.
Too bad his “doctors” never verify anything he states regarding his condition to the media.
C-19 for 10-12 is up finally.
Also if anybody has emailed me to my Hotmail account recently, I may not have seen it. I just discovered a bunch of emails from before 10-1 that I never knew I actually had.
