I will plan to read. It boggles my mind that folks do not understand that if there is no mandate WE pay for those who are not insured through increased costs
Global daily deaths headed for another record today. Already at 8,200 and climbing.
At the moment, France’s second wave is worse than the first in terms of hospitalizations and deaths. 857 deaths reported today. New daily cases are declining due to the lockdown, but the situation on the ground (in the hospitals) is very concerning.
Interesting to see how well Finland, Norway, Greece, Ireland, and Germany are doing. They did well in the spring, and they’re repeating their good performance in the fall.
Targeted, partial lockdowns taking place in Canada, including Toronto. See link below. Note, this does NOT include schools. Very similar to European measures. Overall, Canada has done very well, particularly in the metropolitan areas. https://twitter.com/LaurenPelley/status/1326276870657220617
48 active cases in neighboring northbridge. One case in our middle school.
You may recall I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had do doubt Europe would turn things around within a few weeks. Well, we’re seeing strong signs of that in quite a number of countries. See link below. Less so in France and Italy, but that turnaround is coming this week. In Europe they once again have actual targeted policies in place, not magic tricks. They also don’t have governments and parliaments that dither and delay in terms of fiscal help for ordinary citizens.
Meanwhile, the U.S. is in denial mode, waiting for a vaccine to bail us out of something which isn’t feasible right now. Sane mitigation measures are feasible, but many states refuse to protect their citizens. More than 1,350 deaths today already. headed for the worst day since July, and later this week I expect we’ll have the worst day since early May. Then next week or the week after we’ll be fairly close to where we were in April. We’re far and away the worst affected country in terms of absolute numbers of deaths. And, we’re number 3 in terms of death rate (deaths per million inhabitants) among industrialized nations. I expect we’ll be number 1 within a couple of months. Pathetic for a great, affluent nation like ours.
While loss was going to be unavoidable, it’s sad to think how many people would still be alive with a different approach to this at the outset – the approach we should have taken.

My latest Forbes article is on the Supreme Court hearing today on the constitutionality of the Obamacare individual mandate. Though it may be severable from the rest of the Affordable Care Act, an individual mandate is necessary to achieve universal access. No other nation’s system of health insurance works to provide universal access without a mandate of some sort. https://www.forbes.com/sites/joshuacohen/2020/11/10/affordable-care-act-mandate-is-necessary-to-achieve-universal-access/?sh=2a0310f73d80
