The global daily death tally reported yesterday – 9,301 – was another record. And today will mark yet another record, as we’re already at 8,300. The reported daily death toll could reach 10,000 by this evening.
Sweden has been unable to avoid a second wave. Hospitalizations and ICU usage are up 100% in less than 10 days. During this period cases have been rising at a very rapid clip, with test positivity approaching 10%. Deaths are still relatively low, but have begun to increase (10-12 per day this week).
Sweden experimented with herd immunity and failed miserably.
Also, will U.S. numbers be delayed due to the Veterans Day holiday much like on weekends?
Probably some delays with today’s holiday. But the numbers today look quite grim nonetheless.
In North Dakota they’re asking nurses who tested positive but are asymptomatic to work because of staffing shortages. Hospitalizations there are at catastrophic levels.
If you had asked me in March which states would be most affected, I would NEVER have included North Dakota. Yet, here we are.
Sweden’s coronavirus test capacity is limited. Also, ICU capacity is limited for all diseases. They’re not yet bumping up against ICU or hospitalization constraints. But, they ration explicitly there. You’re only admitted to ICU as a Covid-19 patient if you have a strong likelihood of making it.
I don’t understand the right-wing’s obsession with Sweden. While I believe the Swedish healthcare system is fine, it’s not a libertarian or right-wing’s dream scenario. It’s more socialized than almost any other medical system in Europe. Explicit rationing based on cost and cost-effectiveness, ageism, primary care doctors as gatekeepers.
Also, the Swedes have been in what they themselves call “virtual” lockdown since March. It’s not a strict lockdown. But it includes many measures many states in the U.S. do not deploy, including very strict limits on gathering sizes. For example, there is NO way the Swedes would permit an indoor rally with no physical distancing and a large crowd. Yet, this is what we do in this country ALL of the time, even in states with high prevalence of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. It borders on psychotic, frankly, in my view. Here’s an example; a rally today in Georgia: https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1326621521792659461
And I bet most of those at the rally are “anti-vaxxers” to boot.
Christmas has literally been canceled in Quincy. Their annual Christmas Parade on Thanksgiving Sunday along with Santa’s appearance has been canceled in addition to all Christmas tree lighting ceremonies.
“You’re a mean one…Mister Covid”. 🙁
It’s really just the public gatherings that are being held off until this is over. No, there won’t be a parade or lighting celebration/ceremony, but they will still put up and turn on their lights. While losing that other stuff sucks, it’s also important to recognize what we can still have.
As predicted earlier today we set another grim record. Global daily deaths now well over 10,000, and approaching 10,200 for the day. Atop the daily death leader board is the European Union and UK (500 million inhabitants), with the U.S. (330 million inhabitants) likely to take over the number 1 spot once again by Thanksgiving. The U.S. has been the world’s leader in deaths ~55% of the days of this pandemic. India has had one week at number one; Brazil about two weeks; China about three weeks; the EU/UK about 12 weeks; and the U.S. about 22 weeks.

U.S. numbers are dismal today. Keep in mind at least 3 states with high numbers of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths didn’t report today. https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1326682669678174208
C-19 for 11-12 is ready.
