  1. I believe the 18-19th storm will not be snow to me, our last chance for a white christmas will be the 22nd

  2. Thanks TK !!

Looking forward to todays bright sunshine.

This Thursday/Friday could be interesting. Before Thursday is out, New England should be in the next warm sector. Before the cooler air can arrive during the day Friday, the region probably will have mild overnight temps (Thursday night). Timing wise, it could allow for two days of excessively mild daytime highs / temp anomolies.

  3. Im not sure which yr maybe early 90’s we got 6-8 inches of snow 6 day before Christmas and it was gone by Christmas eve so I think outa these possible snow events we need at least a half a foot so its not gone by Christmas

    1. That depends on the weather after the snow. If it’s even marginally cold, with the very low sun angle, the snow won’t go much of anywhere after it falls.

      1. Hi Charlie.

I think what your looking at is misleading you 🙂 …….From Taunton NWS site, today loses 46 seconds of sunlight. If the time of solar noon stayed the same, then the sunrise would be 23 seconds later and the sunset would be 23 seconds earlier than yesterday…..However, solar noon arrives 27 seconds later today than yesterday, and thus with that shift, the sunrise occurs 50 seconds later than yesterday and the sunset occurs 4 seconds later than yesterday, for a net gain of a 46 second decrease in sunlight. Yes, a later sunset :), but only a gain of 6 seconds since the earliest sunset Friday.

        1. Yep sunsets gain time from here on through winter and sunrises lose time until early jan when they set around 7:13 but by then sunset is around 4:45, my declination book says we r around a declination of around 21.56 today, the greatest declination if I’m not mistaken is 23.26 on dec 21st have a great day

          1. My husband actually noticed the other night that it is staying light longer. Unlike me, he does not like the sun setting early. The fact that he actually notices a few seconds difference apparently proves that 🙂

  4. It will be calm until later this this week. Last night was cold and it must have been really cold around or below 20 to form ice in the marshland behind my house.
today sunny and cold as temps will struggle to reach the low 40s
tonight clear and another chilly night in the low to mid 20s
monday though tuesday sunny with highs in the mid 40s. lows in the upper 20s
wednesday increasing clouds highs in the low 4os lows in the low 30s
thursday and thursday night warm with a chance of showers highs in the mid to upper 40s lows in the mid to upper 30s.
friday sunny and warm highs in the upper 50s.
friday night partly to mostly cloudy cooler with lows in the mid to upper 20s
saturday . sunny and cooler with highs in the low 40s.
thursday’s possible storm might not effect us with much. but if it does it would be an inside runner with us being on the warmer side of things. with showers even if it does not effect us we will still be warm as the storm will pass well west of the region.
another storm is possible early next week but its so far out some models are not even thinking it will form.

A cold front friday afternoon will bring temps back down to normal

    1. We will get snow before christmas trust me please. I was the first one here to mention this and since many have jumped on board with me. Yes I have no proof, just a strong feeling and past four Decembers. Yes we may not have a white christmas if the snow melts, but it will snow either right before or right after. I am willing to bet anything on this. I rarely am wrong when I have such a strong feeling. And I do not want to sound like snowballmanny because I am not like that, just have good feeling about this.

  5. With the current NAO forecast and the CPC temperature outlooks it sure doesn’t look good for a white Christmas around these parts. I hope TK is right. We shall see.

    1. Only calling for a couple threats. They still have to actually pan out – well at least one of them anyway. From a meteorological overview standpoint it doesn’t look great at all.

  6. first possible weather maker for thursday and thursday night looks less and less likly with only the front coming off the storm effecting us. it will become warmer thursday with a chance of showers but then a cold front moves through to cool things off late friday afternoon highs will be in the 30s and 40s next weekend before our next weather system. for the first part of next week around the 19th and 20th which looks like a rain maker for eastern mass and a mix for the interior . But it is really far out and it will likly change.

    1. I may not be able to read the models but when I see you post an UGH JimmyJames, I know it’s not good for snow lovers 🙁

      1. Hey Vicki…. If I posted an UGH after a model run its not good if you are a snowlover like me. I am hoping sooner rather than later there will be less UGH and more YES

  7. Happy to have a bright, wintry day after a nice, seasonable night at last. I really thought it wouldn’t get cold last night, but I was wrong. I’m unhappy to see the `same’ forecast of rebounding temperatures and rain on Wednesday (how many Wednesdays in a row have we seen rain?). I saw Joe Joyce’s blog post. He’s good at what he does. It just surprised me that he “enjoys the [recent] warmth.” Gosh, as a weather person who lives in the Boston area, I can’t imagine liking unseasonable and persistent warmth in December. Of course, he’s entitled to his opinion. It just seems a little out of character for a weather person. What’s so fantastic about living here is the weather and seasonal change. So, let it be warm in the late spring, summer, and early fall, but not in winter.

I’m not an expert model interpreter (I’m amazed at how well some of you read the models and graphs!), but what I’m seeing long-term is a lot of inconsistency, even from run to run, which suggests that models are having trouble accounting for the variableness of the variables. One thing that heartens me is to see the Hudson Bay area with seasonable and even some below-normal temperatures. Our winter weather (or I should say winter steering currents) does come more from that part of Canada than, say, Alaska. A consistent snow cover from there through Northern New England would also help. If we could get a pattern shift which involved a more consistent, prevailing NW wind, and I know this would imply the need for blocking over Greenland (which isn’t there), we would be all set for a real start to winter. Instead, we’re taking baby steps and often stumbling.

    1. I was also thinking that Hudson Bay icing over, as it has been the past two weeks, might help spread the colder air further eastward. Maybe it has for Canada, but, as you point out, it hasnt done much for the east coast of the US.

    2. Last night was a good set up to radiate, even with some low clouds around for part of the night. It was clear long enough to radiate out quickly. That was the basis for my forecast low temps last night and again tonight…

Beautiful December day today. I spent part of it walking the Middlesex Fells Reservation in Stoneham/Winchester.

Your last sentence pretty much says it all. We are in the same overall regime, but we have altered the short-term pattern, and this is in fact baby steps and stumbles. We’ll see where it goes from here.

    1. That is a good idea to get an UGH rating going. I can say now the UGH were not high but now that the yard work is done and were starting to approach winter the UGH become higher. I know last winter there were some snowlovers who were saying UGH when snow was mentioned after the 6 week stretch we had.
Patroits should have an easy win against the Redskins. There schedule down the stretch is not difficult. The Denver game could be interesting the way that team is on a run since Tebow was named the starting quarterback.

      1. We’ve watched gronks run six times. He’s remarkable. My son in law has bought a bunch of his rated rookie cards on eBay for next to nothing I think their value is increasing by the second

          1. No kidding Vicki !! 🙂 It shouldnt have to be that they need to win against this team 49-45. Thats what this game feels like its heading towards.

    1. The 80s Redskins of Theismann, Art Monk, John Riggins, Dexter Manley and Darrell Green with coach Joe Gibbs were great ! But this current owner is unlikable and they just havent had good player personnel in a while.

  8. Hadi did you live in D.C. at one time and is that why you are a Redskins fan?
I have been a Cowboys fan since I started getting into football right when the Cowboys were one of the best teams in football in the early to mid 90s. I have still stuck with this team even though only two playoff wins since 95.
Tom UGH is good for the Pats defense and that is a huge area of concern.

    1. They’ve had opportunities to get the defense I don’t know what the powers that be in the pats are thinking. I don’t believe this defense can begin to compete in playoffs.

We look pathetic. Even Brady is off today.

  9. To me, today is the most beautiful weather day seen in the last few months and its not only because of the chill. Its the cloudless sky and the light wind as well. Perfect.

      1. Agree with you, Vicki, and Tom. The air is so clean. I think I’ll run this evening and tomorrow morning, just to get that fresh air into my system. Next Saturday may be a repeat of today, maybe. I’m OK with that, as I’ll take my Mom and my daughter to Trinity Church for the Candlelight Carols. Always more festive when it actually feels like winter.

  10. Yea I grew up in northern Virginia, so always been a skins fan.

Tom, owner cares which is important and he did hire Bruce Allen, they will turn it around.

    1. yes….also, I’m starting to think that for the next 10 to 14 days, many areas may not total more than 1 inch of precip. Couple of progressive, cold frontal passages with storms going west of New England followed by spells of chilly, dry weather.

  11. I know this suppose to be strictly weather related but the Pats Defense held and saved the game for us . in the clear cool night in washingtion

    1. Matt- feel free to talk about sports here or anything from time to time. Many sports fans here including TK.

  12. Pats escaped against a not so good team. No way they do anything in the playoffs with a defense like that, sorry folks.

    1. Agree to a certain point. It is true anything can happen in the playoffs to either a good or bad team. I think the pats were way better than jets last year.
But the better team chose not to play the way they should have and in my mind the not so better team won. So anything can happen.

  13. Was out earlier with my youngest and where some water had collected, last night froze it into a decent top layer of ice. She had some fun breaking the ice and once we poured the water bucket, she had fun stomping on the ice…..Our very old and shallow pool is filled with about a foot of water, we havent covered it the past couple of winters. Anyway, it had the thinnest cover of ice this morning, which melted today in the sun. Am anticipating a bit thicker cover of ice tonight. Has me thinking about what the lake temp is that we have predictions on for 1 inch of ice.

    1. Tom yesterday the town built an outdoor ice scating area. It is on the town green right after town hall. They filled it last night. Same thing patchy thin ice.
I guess the goal is to make it bigger every year. I believe this year is free.

      1. John is that Marshfield or Pembroke? My son in law is trying to set up a rink in our yard. He had a smaller one last year. He’s working on teaching his 4 yr old to skate. I’ll tell him about rink there since they’ll be staying with us down there for at least a week

        1. LOL. I just posted to you about that. Pembroke. They did it all yeaterday, and It looks like they did a good job.
No high boards yet, just nice big flat area. It is right after the town hall where we did the lighting last week. I guess this will be an every year thing with hopes of making it a nice place to come to. I am not sure how it is going to go yet. I am thinking something should be in the town paper on Thursday, I heard it is free. My friend was down there yesterday helping out.

    2. i have this small snow maker and it worked last night have an 1 or 2 inches to start a sleeding hill that I let the youngsters use and i am going to be starting it up again tonight . i usually open it around christmas vacation. i need at least 4 inches through the whole thing for it to be safe. Its a small hill but its still something that the kids can use .

  14. Change of my forcast of earlier
tonight clear cold lows in the low to mid 20s
monday sunny highs in the low to mid 40s
monday night cool lows in the 20s
tuesday sunny highs in the low to mid40s
tuesday night increasing clouds mid 20s to upper 20s
wednesday partly cloudy spotty rain or snow shower/flurry highs in the upper30s to low 40s
wendesday night increasing clouds. lows in the low 30s chance of rain and freezing rain.
thursday rain liklywith a chance of freezing rain. outside of 495 rain inside 495 highs in the 40s
thursday night cloudy lows in the upper30s
friday sunny and cooler with highs in the low to mid40s
friday night clear and cooler lows in the mid to upper 20s
saturday colder highs in the low 40s and upper 30s
saturday night cold lows in the upper 10s to low20s
sunday cold highs in the low to mid 30s
sunday night cold lows in the 10s to mid20s
storm for the mid week could create some icy conditions durring the morning commute for the high terrain for worcester county and the berkshires
the possible storm for the 19th and 20th could be a winter storm for the interior or just for the high terrain far out but possible and also this weeks storm could change as well As of right now i do not think anyone north and west of boston will see temps above 50 on thursday.

  15. Although in Barry’s just updated forcast he is saying two longshots of snow before xmas, I tend to disagree and am sticking with my call. Remember I had said this event will happen the last 2weeks of December and will be plowable. Nice night out there tonight.

      1. John no jabs. With maps and computers and everything else it isn’t a perfect science. My husband used to chuckle at my gut instincts. They were accurate enough that he now listens

        1. I think we will be right. Also did you see my post to Tom
on what my town did yesterday. You guys may want to check it out.

          1. John and Tom and Coastal too. My daughter just asked what you know about Rockland. They are wondering about school system and crime etc. Thanks.

  16. Hoping you are right John. Maybe we should with Tebow he is in direct contact with the lord:). I hope pats crush him and the Broncos next week.

    1. I love the 4:15 games. We have been spoiled this year. Pats seem to always struggle while playing in Denver. After next game short week. All games will be played on christmas eve. I was so excited to have it fall on a Sunday so we would have football and not havto watch basketball. I was sorry to hear they made the change.

  17. Vicki- I think I told you my thoughts on this before. Now as you I grew up in Marshfield and now reside in Pembroke. Now this is just what I think so nothing against other towns. First of all I have no information on Rockland. Growing up in Marshfield there was nothing to do as kids. Everything we had like a drive in movie, bowling, ban on video games and roller rink was taking away. Very boring town in off season. Although I do see some changes like the boys and girls club they will be building, this was one of the reasons I chose not to move back. We never really hung out in Pembroke a whole lot just kind of passed through. I am now working on my fourth year here and could not be happier. I think you get a good bang for your buck here. There is always something going on for the family, nice farms, lakes and great school system. The crime rate is low. The most arrested offense here is DUI. Pembroke is a nice country family town. Marshfield is a nice family beach town. I am also 10 minutes away from Hanover columbia rd which offers everything you can think of. Again not taking away from other town because all good. But tell your daughter to take a ride here while she is here. I could tell you some nice dinner spots while you are here on your stay. Also nice dinner spots in Marshfield.

    1. Hi John and thank you very much. I did remember you telling me all that but it’s nice to refresh my memory too. I do like the sound of Pembroke. I am not sure why my daughter asked about Rockland but suspect the prices may be lower for houses but that is not always a good thing.

I am very interested in any restaurants you all have to recommend. I don’t know if TK minds if we post about this here since it’s not weather related. My email address is cablars@aol.com if anyone want to send any restaurant recommendations for the area to that address

  18. Mike W. on channel 5 was not having his best way of wording tonight: “We’ve had a mild winter”. Might want to wait until we actually start and finish the season before we comment on what it was like. Also, paraphrasing: “Even though it will be cold tomorrow it will be warmer.” Yup, that sure clears it up.

    Updating the blog.

    1. hahahaha -now that sounds like something(s) I’d say and then afterwards wonder what in heavens name I meant 🙂

  19. I’m a die hard patriots fan, have been since 1985 when we lost to the bears in the Superbowl, We need Chung back

  20. I can not wait for snow and i am looking at the models and everything and i do not see much
Tonight though wednesday partly sunny highs in the low to mid40s lows in the 20s
    wednesday night increasing cloudsy
thursday cloudy with showers with some freezing rain/snow mixed in outside of 495. highs in the 40s
friday and friday night clear, highs in the 40s lows in the 20s and low 30s
saturday and sunday sunny with highs in the mid to upper30s lows in the 20s
not really sure about early next week as it is so far out and the models are changing their minds almost every run. right now as of the last model run it does not look good for snow again its far out and likly change but there is still a shot at some snow. this is not what we want as snow lovers or people that dislike rain
    http://www.dejongonline.com/weather/weathermodel.htm
also i am thinking what the weather will be for areas around in middlesex county in northeast mass . so i might be wrong for other areas since i also put into account what kind of clouds i see. as of a white christmas i do not see that happen at least not inside 495.
HISTORIC probability from weather channal of a white christmas
