Sweden is experiencing a spike in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. The prime minister, Stefan Lofven, said this may warrant the country’s first formal lockdown since the pandemic started almost a year ago.
“We are seeing an increase in cases again, we need to take new measures,” Lofven said at a press briefing in Stockholm. “If the situation gets worse, the government is prepared to enforce a possible lockdown in parts of Sweden.
The price Sweden has paid for its herd immunity “experiment” early on in the pandemic I assume.
Good to see our sports arenas and outdoor stadiums opening up again, albeit in very limited capacity. Even the Revs at Gillette will have spectators as well. I wonder if this will include college events as well?
I wonder if it is due to anything Sweden did early on, which we know was misreported in the US, or following other counties that Joshua has mentioned are spiking
If we are not careful…specifically Baker, according to Fauci yesterday, we will surge also. He was concerned with several of the variants including the one in NYC.
Within the Boston Public Schools, officials discovered a 4.6% increase in failing grades in 4 core subjects (math, social studies, language arts and science).
Also, for Boston students in grades 6 – 12 as of November during the first marking period, the rate of students failing at least one course increased.
Five days a week in-person learning is clearly a must!
School reopening should be the priority. Agreed. But safeguards must be in place.
Where did the numbers come from Philip?I won’t say more because it is clear what my view is. Had we invested the time in remote as many schools did rather than try to unrealistically get kids back, that would not be the case.
I know far too many who are excelling to know for sure it can be done well. I’m betting yanking kids out of what many schools have perfected and tossing them into something new and still untested will do far more harm.
Joshua is right. Safety of school staff and, because many will now cut corners on distancing and masks, of kids is an absolute priority.
This of course refutes much of the plan by DESE and Baker. Note the safest place for kids. Also note 6 and not 3 feet. And more.
As you know Vicki I completely agree! My kids are doing very well under the remote plan.
I need a care emoji.
Today’s data confirms what we’ve been seeing for the past 7 days, a now global spike in cases, driven by the new variants. Hospitalizations are now rising in France, Italy, Sweden, and all of Central Europe. U.S. is not escaping this wave, though it will be muted due to vaccinations.
The most recent seroprevalence studies in NYC and London – both cities have had high rates of infections AND vaccinations – show between 30 and 35% have antibodies. Let’s assume conservatively that another 10-15% have cross-reactivity immunity through T-cells. That’s still below 50%. And yet, Cuomo, like Baker, is throwing caution to the wind.
NYC is up to 7% test positivity. The new variant there is taking hold.
I’ve always argued that the U.S. rations as much, if not more, than other countries. We just do it surreptitiously, often through policies of neglect or based on a person’s wealth status or ability to pay. Well now there’s more solid proof of this. I will call out all Democrats and Republicans who boast “America has the greatest healthcare system … we don’t ration like they do overseas. … we save lives and don’t put a price tag on life.” It’s a load of crap.
Sadly true comments.
Moved from whw …again, very sorry for the extra work, TK
While I agree with this mandate…..a tad hypocritical don’t ya think. School committees and other town boards cannot meet in person.
“NOTE: Due to the current COVID-19 Crisis (and pursuant to
Governor Baker’s March 21, 2021, order suspending certain provisions of the Open Meeting Law), this meeting will be held via Zoom teleconference…”
It is exactly that!
Am interested in what you will do for your kids if towns aren’t forced to send kids back full time. Tk has my email if you want to talk. Scurrying here for sure. Talk about pulling the rug out
I do have your email and will let you know what we are thinking as soon as we know more. Dese will have the unions to deal with as well. We are hoping they will be able to stick with remote.
Agree. I look forward to hearing from you. I suspect I have your email also. We have a SC meeting Monday night
C-19 for 2-27 is ready.
