Italy is back into a strict lockdown through Easter. Greece, too. France is doing a very bizarre weekend-only lockdown – not sure that helps. The Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland are in the throes of the worst of the pandemic. The Netherlands saw its highest caseload today in close to 2 months, with ICU usage going up this week. Vaccination numbers are improving across Europe, but clearly not in time to ward off this latest wave.
U.S. numbers have plateaued. The good news is hospitalizations are not increasing. They’ve decreased further this week, though the decrease has been slight.
The other two countries that have vaccinated even larger portions of the population – Israel and Britain – are seeing steadily declining hospitalizations and deaths. So hopefully that’s the trend we’ll start to see soon.
Staggering numbers, quite frankly, particularly when you consider how high the baseline already was. See graph with increases in cases in the past 2 weeks across Europe. You can see the countries that have been doing well recently – Spain and Portugal – and the ones that have not. By the way, this analysis includes days through March 10th, but doesn’t include yesterday and today when the highest case numbers were recorded in the Netherlands since January. https://twitter.com/AndyVermaut/status/1370449815692185602/photo/1
The interesting thing is that across Europe there isn’t a tidy correlation between vaccinations and the latest case surge. Hungary is an example of this.
C-19 for 3-13 is ready.
