Jean, I do hope you can travel to South Africa in October.
And Vicki, I hope your NYC friend can visit Sweden soon.
For now Europe is very much closed to US citizens. The UK will admit you, but only under the conditions I laid out in yesterday’s post.
There are indications the EU will open up to fully vaccinated Americans by July. But nothing is certain.
The UK will revisit its green, amber, and red lists every 30 days. Let’s hope the downward trend continues and the US becomes a member of the green list. Right now the only members are nations with very low case counts, like Israel.
Will you still be able to visit your daughter in the U.K. this summer Joshua?
Per my post yesterday, I’m able to visit, but there are quite onerous conditions at this time so I’m not sure. Hopefully these conditions are partly lifted by August. I’m fine with the proof of vaccination and a negative Covid-19 test prior to flying. But it’s the other conditions that would be really strict: Mandatory quarantine for 10 days (my visit is only 8); and government-supervised Covid testing on Days 2 and 8. There’s a 500 pound fine for violators, and that’s a daily fine. Not that I would want to violate any law. But it just tells you that the kinds of quarantine and testing rules they still have in place are stricter than any of the protocols/rules we ever had.
Very draconian. Could your daughter come to visit you here instead? Would the protocol be less strict?
Yes, that’s possible. She intends to fly here anyway some time this fall or winter. Upon return to England she would have to quarantine and do all the protocol, but that’s easier for someone who lives there. It’s easier to simply stay put.
At this point, as it’s been throughout Covid, it’s wait and see. Let’s hope the rules ease up a bit later this summer to allow me to travel there.
I think Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s intensive care experience changed him. I do get it. He saw and experienced first hand how dangerous the virus can be. One can say that ever since then the UK has been stricter and the most aggressive in terms of vaccinations.
There are currently vaccine studies in children as young as 6 months.
Joshua, does this mean that in the future, Covid vaccinations will be automatically conducted right at birth?
Could be part of the ever-expanding set of childhood vaccinations, yes. But I’m not an expert on this.
Joshua, have you ever heard of the new term “breakthrough infections”? I just heard about it on WCVB news at 4:30.
Breakthrough infections simply mean that someone has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 AFTER being fully vaccinated. This doesn’t necessarily mean the person is contagious, though it would stand to reason that if the person is symptomatic (a very small number are) they are contagious. Most breakthrough infections are harmless – asymptomatic – but here again it’s important that experts determine whether these folks can transmit to others. We don’t know yet.
Also, it appears that there are more breakthrough infections among those taking the J&J shot or AZ shots, than mRNA shots. This still needs to be ascertained, however.
Did who change its stance in asymptomatic?
From who
Overall, the model predicted that 59% of coronavirus transmission would come from people without symptoms, including 35% from people who were pre-symptomatic and 24% from those who never showed symptoms at all.Jan 11, 2021
There is an added problem with mask removal. I’ve read comments and know of a number of parents whose children have compromised immune systems as a result of a health condition.
Those parents of course have remained full remote. Many of those parents were hoped to send these children to summer school programs. With vaccines and fewer numbers in attendance, it would give the kids a chance to be with other children
They no longer can do this. I may take flack on this, but I stand firm. To me this is a form of discrimination….however slight it might seem. What in heavens name is the problem with wearing a mask? What in heavens name is wrong with us that we fold to political pressure and don’t consider the most vulnerable among us.
Policy in Sutton next year is two snow days and anything more will be remote. That makes end if school year mid June
Vicki, WHO changed its views on asymptomatic in 2020, but that applies to those who are not vaccinated.
To me it shouldn’t matter whether one is vaccinated or not in terms of asymptomatic being contagious or not. But I am not an epidemiologist. I think the issue is viral load, which is probably less with a vaccinated infected person. But I don’t know.
My post was from Jan 2021. What was it in2020? I do see what you mean about viral load with vaccinated. I can’t help but wonder if it is too early to know
Heard earlier today from a person at the Thai restaurant I got take-out at that fully vaccinated Americans can now go to Europe. I told the person that this is news to me. Well, it turns out to be fake or at least misinterpreted news. The EU is discussing plans to reopen, but has not done so, nor has it provided a timetable. And even then the health commission will have final say. I think it will reopen, but in July or August. This British tourist trying to fly to Spain was turned away today, at a Cardiff airport. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-57176693?
C-19 for 5-20 is ready.
