DAYS 1-5 (MAY 30 – JUNE 3)

This middle of Memorial Day Weekend blog update will be short. There’s not much change to what was written yesterday. We’re in the midst of a chilly, unsettled stretch of weather that coincided with the long holiday weekend that’s the unofficial start of the summer season, taking on special meaning this year as we come down the home stretch of a year plus that’s been anything but “normal”. Many would love to get out and enjoy some nice weather, but if you get out there again today you’ll have to act more like it’s March. That’s the way it goes sometimes! The next low pressure wave brings its round of rainfall, which will turn more showery in nature as it goes on later today through tonight. Still have hope we get it to exit early enough to salvage a good deal of Memorial Day Monday rain-free. It will warm up slightly that day as well as we lose the northeasterly wind that we still have today. We’re finally free of this system as June arrives, and the first few days look more typically mild to warm for early June, along with slightly higher humidity and eventually the risk for some shower activity as a disturbance and frontal boundary move into the area during the middle of the week…

TODAY: Overcast. Areas of fog and drizzle especially near the eastern coast. Rain returns south to north during the morning, becoming showery later. Highs 48-55. Wind NE to E 5-15 MPH with gusts 20-30 MPH, strongest in coastal areas.

TONIGHT: Cloudy. Showers likely. Slight chance of a thunderstorm overnight. Areas of fog and drizzle. Temperatures steady 48-55. Wind E to SE 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

MONDAY (MEMORIAL DAY): Mostly cloudy. Showers likely in the morning. Chance of showers in the afternoon. Highs 58-65. Wind SE 5-15 MPH shifting to SW during the morning then NW during the afternoon.

MONDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Areas of fog possible. Lows 50-57. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 71-78. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 55-62. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly to mostly cloudy. Chance of showers late-day favoring areas south and west of Boston. Highs 72-79. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers. Areas of fog. Lows 60-67. More humid with dew point near 60. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Highs 77-84. Humid – dew point 60+. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 7-10 (JUNE 4-8)

An intrusion of cooler air may arrive early in the period before warmer air returns with the general pattern featuring high pressure offshore, high pressure in Canada, and a weak boundary nearby. Episodes of showers and a few thunderstorms are possible at times during this period, with timing uncertain this far in advance.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 9-13)

Overall idea right now is similar pattern will continue but shower threat may decrease somewhat.

  1. Thanks TK.

1.08” at Logan yesterday. How much in the JPD bucket?

TK – Is there a subtle HHH pattern setting up for the mid-term? I get the impression that next weekend will be awfully humid, and sticking around awhile beyond that. No pun intended.

    1. We turn warmer and more humid. Not seeing any real heat, at least in a lasting sense. It’s still very early for that.

And HHH is pretty much a thing of the past now. HH is more applicable. We almost never get hazy around here anymore. Cleaner overall atmosphere. The evidence is all over the observations since the early 2000s. 🙂

Our hazy summer days, while still here now and then, are far less common.

  2. Thank you, TK

0.43 here yesterday. Turned fire on for a bit. It was an awesome laid back movie watching day. I watched a Hallmark Christmas movie and wanted to put my tree up. The latter had nothing to do with the temp and everything to do with the movie. Then watched the Friends reunion last night and laughed and cried for two hours. I highly recommend to all Friends fans

  3. Thanks, TK!

    2.62″ here since Friday.
    48 degrees.

Had to turn the furnace on last night during the Bruins game. 🙁

  4. Don’t know if it’s true or just wishful thinking, but it seems like rain totals forecast for today are dipping a bit. May be a good thing as my wife swears her plants jumped a foot overnight.

  5. This likely a bit over cooked, but
2 89 inches in the JPD bucket since Friday evening.

  6. 2.88 total through last night. I thought I might get onto deck for a few this am before rain began but no such luck

  7. Thanks TK
Boston yesterday was the only place that did not record a new record low high maximum yesterday. Worcester smashed the record by 7 degrees with a high of 44 yesterday. The previous record was 51 set back in 1917. and Bridgeport also smashed the record by 6 degrees. The previous record was 58 set back in 1950

    1. You are my hero. Way to make what is often thought of as a negative into a positive. I’m betting this weekend will be one you and your family remember for years

  8. I thought Massachusetts Memorial Day ski weekend on Tuckerman was in my dads time. My sister in law said my older brother remembers skiing Tuckerman on Memorial Day in the 60s

  9. Can this be technically called a nor’easter?

The Memorial Day Weekend nor’easter of 2021. 🙁

    1. It’s not one of them, no. It’s just a series of low pressure areas along a boundary combined with high pressure supplying cool air from the north and east, resulting in a stretch of very cool & unsettled weather. Fairly common occurrence in the spring in general, but we lacked such events this particular spring.

  10. Thanks TK.

2.31” the grand total here for storm 1 Friday night and yesterday.

0.45” so far today for storm 2. Total of 2.76” so far on the weekend and an impressive 6.33” on the month of May. 7”+ looking pretty doable now.

  11. I’m trying to recall the last time we had even one full day of rain let alone two and more tomorrow. I know it is odd but I even enjoy seeing the cars come up the road with windshield washers on while the trees blow around them

    0.52 here today so far

    1. Meanwhile so many ppl out there in social media land complaining about the ruined weekend. Well, maybe some plans had to change but glad some of us know how to enjoy it regardless! 🙂

  12. Vicki, it’s been a while since we had more or less continuous rain for such a long stretch. I can’t recall the last time off the top of my head. We’re so lucky in New England in this regard. We tend not to get long stretches of rain, like, say, Wales, Ireland, and England.

I told my daughter on Thursday that the weather is bound to improve in London this weekend because it’s going downhill fast in Boston. She just emailed me to say it’s been glorious outside in London this weekend, finally, after a brutal 6-week stretch of gray.

  13. Why couldn’t we have had this exact setup back on MLK or President’s Day Weekend? Know what I mean? 😉

    1. Because this is the way the atmosphere worked it out this time. 🙂 This 3-day stretch may largely prevent us from slipping back into drought at least for the early part of the summer (depending on what happens after this). It’s extremely beneficial for both water supply and agriculture. Those may be less fun than a cookout but they are more important. 🙂

This weekend is really dedicated to those we lost. Yeah we can have fun too because of those sacrifices which is fine so long as we take the time to pay them tribute. We have allllll summer to bbq and beach and frolic. It’s still spring in New England. 😉

      1. Actually, I meant that if the exact same setup was on either of those weekends, big widespread snow all over most of not all of SNE! 🙂

        1. Well in a hypothetical sense the first part of it would have had a decent chance to be a snow event for a good part of the region. The part that we’re having now, not so much.

  14. Given that last weekend the guidance was indicating that this weekend was going to be quite nice, it may be a little bit premature for anybody to be talking about a 4-day heat wave from days 8 to 11. Regardless, there is talk of that on local media so those of us in the know may want to inform our friends to take that with a grain of salt if they hear it. 🙂

  15. At last ob, Boston was sitting at a high of 51 for the day which is currently tied for the record low high temperature. But I think they will lose that tie as the temperature goes up to somewhere between 52 and 54 over the next 4 hours.

  16. My thermometer’s been stuck in the upper 40s all weekend; day and night. Still at 49F. The maximum temperature today was 49.6F. Could of course go up this evening.

    1. One more shot I think. But so far the stuff hasn’t fired any off. We have one more lobe of instability to come through and then after that I think everything shifts east.

      1. TK My oldest grand, as you know, struggles with loud noises and anxiety. You have been a huge help letting us know if we might have thunder at night The lightning Wednesday night was quiet and perfect for reassuring. He and his brother watched from the window. His brother assured him the whole time that it wasn’t that bad. Truly. Does it get any better
