Dr. Topol is making more sense this week. Just wish he had reserved judgment (or at least not cherry-picked) on UK hospitalizations and deaths, knowing full well that these are lagging indicators. In any event, the news in Britain is not good. https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1413181124667273218
The next shoe to drop is the false notion that breakthrough infections are rare, or that breakthrough infections aren’t transmissible to others. I’m convinced that with the Delta variant vaccine efficacy has been reduced significantly. That is, even fully vaccinated folks have a fair chance at contracting the virus, as the Singapore, UK, and Israeli data are suggesting. I also think they can play a role as vectors for spreading the virus. The good news is that fully vaccinated folks are well protected against severe illness. Not completely protected, but well protected.
Philip mentioned the Topsfield Fair reopening. I think that’s great news. I’m all for outdoor events (eg, Cambridge regatta, Boston marathon), as transmission risks outdoors are quite small.
Breaking News: According to CNN, stocks tumble due to fear of Delta variant.
Seriously, all previously learned stats on herd immunity are out the door with the coronavirus (and its ever-creative variants). I think herd immunity will only come when 100% of the population has been vaccinated or had the latest variant.
Not like that is something everyone on this thread has been saying for over a month
True. Sorry to bore you with it. But, I think it’s worth repeating. Have a ton of respect for Dr. Van Kerkhove, America’s top international public health scientist. From a small town 90 miles west of Albany NY, to the mountain top of international public health in Geneva, Switzerland.
Not bored at all. Your posts are always appreciated. Just frustrated that this was predictable and sad that….,as we have said too many times….we don’t seem to be proactive
Wastewater sampling around the U.S. indicates the coronavirus is mounting a comeback. In some states the level of virus seen in the wastewater is as high as it was in January (Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, among others). Closer to home, levels of virus are still low but are rising gradually. Usually this predicts, say, what we’ll see 2 to 3 weeks from now. In NY state and NYC in particular the sampling indicates a fairly significant increase.
