Speaking of that, the FDA has now approved booster shots especially for those with weak immune systems. When I heard that, I immediately thought of your wife.
Not only her, but all of us that are over age 65. As we age our immunes systems do not function as well. It varies from individual to individual, but in general it does not function as well.
I have like okey only quickly. I had the impression that first folks are those seriously compromised such as folks on chemo, etc. I’d think Mrs OS would qualify. I have a couple of things that weaken my system but had impression that is not top priority. I may be very wrong.
Also is there a time frame from last vaccine to booster.
All of this is unclear at this time. My understanding was booster to be 6 months following 2nd dose. WHich means I am due next month and the MRs. due in Nov.
Thank you. Just read my post. Glad you could get through the auto corrects and typos.
It puts me at October also.
While I thought it would be bad and we could have done more to prepare for it in terms of consistent messaging, more testing, and more mitigation, I did not expect the Delta wave to be this bad in the U.S. https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1426195949517381641
I like Gottlieb, but he really should be more humble and more accurate in his assessment. He loses credibility when he doesn’t admit he was wrong in his previous predictions. He also is totally off base by continuing to call this Delta wave “regionalized.” It’s VERY widespread. Degree of impact differs from region to region, but the wave itself is nationwide. https://twitter.com/SquawkCNBC/status/1426170728676798465
I can’t look quite yet but definitely will. I know it is bad….really bad….and I am scared. Where we should be relying on knowledge laced with common sense, we are relying on mixed messages and a complete lack of common sense. Knowledge means nothing without common sense tossed in.
In all honesty, this is not new and is why I did think it would get bad here. We ignored every darned bit of information from other countries that came months before delta arrived here. We asked for it. We are still having trouble admitting what we should have learned from the UK and especially from Israel.
Unvaccinated have earned a lion’s share of the blame for spread as they should. But our health experts have caused a good part of that with mixed messages about a vaccine that is relatively new, not yet fully approved, and was developed quickly. And worse, too many of our vaccinated truly believe that this vaccine is doing what was promised – 90ish percent efficacy, and once vaccinated you can go back to pre covid. That is exactly what we were told and the darned experts cannot get out of their own way and explain honestly and candidly why this is no longer true.
Sorry for the rant – I’m scared – for all of us but even more so for our children……thousands who are yet to be approved for vaccination. And I am not saying that I think that should be rushed.
So what do folks want people to do? My life is back to normal except for indoor mask use. What else are we asking vaccinated people to do? I get Delta is spreading but it’s not causing major issues for vaccinated people. Of course it’s not perfect, but how long do you want people to be scared? Life is too short to just be inside and be scared. Enjoy your kids, grandkids, travel and live etc.. tomorrow isn’t promised no matter what.
I hear you Hadi. Frankly I am getting tired of having to mask up just get on a 75%+ empty MBTA bus every morning, not to mention having to wear a mask at my Security Desk for 8 hours sitting all by myself.
Plus being completely surrounded by plexiglass.
Source: See the Data on Breakthrough Covid Hospitalizations and Deaths by State, New York Times, August 10, 2021….Breakthrough cases…..Remembering 30+ states are not reporting and data lags. Hospitalizations=7,755, Deaths=1,527
Cdc has stopped tracking mild and moderate breakthroughs. Asymptomatic,Mild and moderate carry a viral load equal to unvaccinated positives. Mild and moderate can and do develop long covid.
Hadi, I know you are doing your part. I know I’m doing mine as is everyone on here. Many vaccinated do mask when inside. Just about as many vaccinated do not wear masks inside. There are so many mixed messages from our experts that a good deal, if not all, of that is understandable. If you read again, you will see that is exactly what the point of my post was. Businesses, even in states that have been successful such as VT, have 50 percent or less folks masked when inside in many areas. In order for covid to stop recreating itself, the majority has to do whatever is needed to stop it…no matter how small a part that is….or we just watch as more and more have a serious, long lasting illness or die. It really is just that simple.
As to your last few sentences…..I’m scared because I don’t see a way out of this until we start to have an open and honest discussion from the top down. We may be getting closer to that, bp but is it soon enough. I agree with your comments, however. I enjoy my kids and grandkids daily. I am blessed. I enjoy life. I always have.
Cdc is reporting that more than 1 mm people have received unauthorized extra vaccines prior to FDA decision on boosters. This is when about half the country still needs a first vaccine.
You mean some have already received boosters before FDA approval? What exactly does the CDC have to say about this?
CDC would never approve of something that FDA hasn’t cleared.
Absolutely. They were reporting this….not condoning it
Yes, understood.
As far as living with the virus, I’m in agreement with Hadi for the most part. It’s not healthy to constantly live in fear, or to stay indoors all the time, unless there are legitimate medical issues that make one particularly susceptible to severe disease. This said, I do think we could have done much more as a nation, and still can do more. Our record is abysmally bad.
Too often we as a nation throw up our hands in despair about a multitude of public health issues, and because it’s not impacting us directly or we’re doing the right thing (and `they’re’ not) we move on.
We can do more. On vaccination outreach, and in some cases vaccine mandates. On mitigation. Mitigation isn’t the same thing as lockdowns or closures. It involves testing or at least the ability to test, which incredibly is still lacking in this country in many areas. Important to prevent further spread, and get people diagnosed sooner so they can be prescribed the right treatment. It involves masking (and distancing where possible) in indoor venues (especially places like pharmacies, supermarkets). It involves much better ventilation in indoor spaces, like schools. It involves crowd limits in indoor spaces that are poorly ventilated. Are these panacea’s? No.
I agree. Of course we need to live our lives; but we need to live them as we wish….as long as we do not endanger others. I’m a bit confused by this part of the discussion because life and how we choose to live it is a very personal thing…as it should be and without censure….again, as long as we do not endanger others. Many like to go out with groups or to travel. That is ok. Many folks are solitary and were solitary before covid. That is ok. If people are taking extra precautions, that doesn’t impact anyone else. It is their choice. That is ok. It doesn’t mean they are locked in a room.
Please read my earlier comment again. It was in response to your comment re Gottlieb. I thought it was clear that I am scared because we are not handling this well as a country. Your comment ….Abysmally bad ….pretty much sums it up. If we do not change our approach, I am afraid of where we will end up.
Sleep well all.
I read that even when approved, boosters will be given by trust alone. I hope i either heard incorrectly or, based in this, they rethink their plan.
Interesting from Dr. Ashish Jha

Score one for the FULLY vaccinated! 🙂

I’m not finding confirmation of the honor system. Dr Sanjay Gupta alluded to it in a passing remark so perhaps there is more to it
C-19 for 8-14 is ready.
