Thank you very much Vicki. This really is a great interview with lots of reasonable ideas presented.
Fascinating. Very interesting and educational.
Thank you for posting.
You are both welcome. It sure is educational.
Thanks for posting, Vicki.
My pleasure.
U.S. is headed down a perilous path that is turning its back on modern medicine and public health. Curiously, it is doing this at a time that both are desperately needed.
26 states now have laws opposing public health measures/powers. This includes uncontroversial things like data collection and analysis! It even includes standards for clean water!
This is ultra-reactionary, antediluvian stuff, and it’s making it into the mainstream.
How do we stop this. Along with the destruction of voting rights, we are literally moving back decades. What is wrong these people.
I don’t understand it.
Presenting the map contained in the link below – which shows that vaccines work – doesn’t seem to help. It only appears to aggravate the anti-vaxx, anti-mask, anti-mandate crowd. It’s almost as if they’re proud of being backward. They want to be in the states with the highest numbers of hospitalizations and deaths. https://twitter.com/deepseadawn/status/1441098079143272451
They are INSANE and must be STOPPED!!!!!!!
Insane came to mind as one word but there is something else I can’t put my finger on. Diabolically Evil doesn’t do it but it is somewhere in that vicinity. For me, it is an attack on our country which leaves me continuing to wonder why there isn’t a way to stop them.
My thoughts are that borders to those states should be closed. I get that is harsh, especially if goods would not be allowed to cross the borders. But then these individuals seem to have perfected mind control and would simply convince their constituents that everyone else is wrong.
Vaccine efficacy has diminished. Full stop. Thank goodness, effectiveness against severe illness has only decreased by a small amount. Nevertheless, the decrease in efficacy against contracting the virus is significant, the cause of breakthroughs, and one of many reasons the virus continues to circulate and wreak havoc.
There is some good news to report.
Globally, the intensity of the pandemic is decreasing, across all indicators. While we don’t know if this will continue, it’s a good sign, given the pace of vaccinations worldwide. And, it appears that all competing variants of concerns thus far have not been able to compete well against the Delta variant.
I would NOT read into this that the pandemic is nearing its end. I hope this is true. But, three things prevent me from undue optimism. 1. Last year at this time the pandemic was also decreasing in intensity, only to roar back by late October (fall/winter surge). 2. While vaccinations are a tool we now have and didn’t last year, they’re not perfect. And, while Delta doesn’t have a viable competitor at the moment, that could change. It did last year. It may again this year. 3. The U.S. is bucking the worldwide trend. Improvements elsewhere haven’t really been seen here; certainly not to the degree that other regions have experienced improvement.
I can be critical of our country’s public health response, domestically. But, our country does a lot of good on the world stage.
I’ve studied drug, vaccine, and medical equipment donation programs for many years. I was stunned to see how little many countries (I am looking at you, China, and you, most of the European Union!) donate, particularly towards HIV, TB, malaria, and neglected tropical disease treatments and preventive measures. The U.S. contributions have saved tens of millions of lives. And this is not a GOP/Democrat thing. Under the leadership of Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George Bush, and Barack Obama the U.S. led the world in donation programs. Number two on the list – the U.K. – was a very, very distant second. Under Trump, this all changed for the worse. Biden is repairing this, and we should all be grateful. Ultimately, we’re all in this together.
Both Bushes, by the way. George Bush Sr. was known as an internationalist. He was ambassador to China during the tail end of the cultural revolution. He understood the U.S. role in the world. His son made a major blunder, in my opinion – Iraq – but his work donating HIV treatments and facilitating distribution (especially in Africa) was truly an immense contribution to global public health. I will never forget this.
Agreed. Bush Jr alienated counties….especially I think England…due to his lies re WMDs but he did well in many other respects. In my lifetime, we have not had a president who was perfect. All IMO loved his country…..with one obvious exception.
An early Covid denialist, later simply a Covid downplayer, but always a provocateur on issues of race, Charlie Kirk, is one of the many problems we’re up against. His views are not Republican in a traditional sense, but since Trump the GOP has morphed into an anti-science party and one with xenophobic tendencies. It’s sad, really. https://twitter.com/BillKristol/status/1441142222791974919
Public health is also about messaging and inter-agency collaboration and communication. Sorely lacking throughout the pandemic has been consistency and straightforward messaging: https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1441163583929290763
Honesty.
Mitigation and vaccination work. Ontario is an exemplar in this regard. A province with ~15 million people. Daily caseload ~675 and deaths, 7. Doing much better than Massachusetts. Ontario has not had draconian lockdowns, by the way. But, it does enforce social distancing rules (masks, distance, and crowd limits); something we’ve failed to do. https://www.cp24.com/news/ont-reports-677-new-covid-19-cases-7-more-virus-related-deaths-1.5597321
C-19 for 9-24 is ready.

Your no-hype southeastern New England weather blog!
There is a link to what I think is a fascinating discussion in this tweet from Eric Topol. It is long but IMO honest.

Then there is this. GOP legislators and others want to repeal ALL vaccine mandates, not just for Covid-19 but also childhood vaccines like MMR, DTP, Hep B, etc … https://twitter.com/bubbaprog/status/1441071490489856002

I don’t understand this. Faust has repeated this many times.
I think he says ……vaccines have not decreased in efficacy. Rather, the breakthroughs in vaccinated are because of Delta.
Sounds like squishy speak to me. If delta is breaking through, vaccine effectiveness is not as strong. What am I missing?
I’m with you. Sounds like republican speak.
It does. I like him but he can be snarky a bit of oneupsmanship
Is that a word?
CA considering mandate for over 12 in school

Important to give credit to the Biden Administration for its efforts to provide global vaccine supplies. https://twitter.com/ASlavitt/status/1441051872945586186
