U.S. daily cases about to go under 100,000 per day; hospitalizations have decreased to around 71,000. I expect the downward trend nationwide to continue, with a lot of discrepancy from region to region.
Keep an eye on Europe. Eastern Europe is in trouble again. I’m now seeing concerning signs of some resurgence in Central and even Western Europe. The Dutch today reported that the positivity rate bottomed out 10 days ago and is now increasing, along with the R (reproduction number) and hospitalizations. It’s not a significant increase (yet), but something to keep an eye on. Keep in mind, Holland is better vaccinated than we are. Much of Europe is experiencing a cooler autumn than we are, so a lot of activity has shifted indoors in the past 2 weeks. May be a contributing factor.
Dr. Fauci and the CDC seem to have no definitive answers regarding the upcoming holidays in terms of huge gatherings. But yet Fauci will be spending time with HIS family.
What are your thoughts Joshua?
Maybe we buck that Europe trend with more and more workplaces with vaccine mandates. Glad to see the courts (so far) not getting involved from what I can tell.
I haven’t heard mention of holidays. I wonder if Dr Fauci’s family does what some of mine does and basically stays away from exposure.
The conversation started with an interview with Dr. Fauci on Sunday morning’s “Face The Nation” (CBS) and it’s been constantly repeated since. More mixed messages with the CDC as well.
Philip, we won’t buck the European trend. We’ve made this mistake way too many times, thinking that we’re different. We’re not. In fact, we’re more vulnerable, have fewer vaccine mandates, no green pass system, and tremendously confusing CDC/WH messaging on boosters and everything else.
I do think that everywhere in the world where there is a relatively high vaccination rate – includes the U.S. and Europe – we will not at all see the wave we saw last winter. But, our eyes should be on Eastern and Central Europe right now, as well as countries like Turkey. Turkey has a vaccination rate that’s just below ours. Today, it had its highest recorded number of cases since April. The U.K.’s very long plateau at an elevated level is disconcerting as well. Ireland is worsening, too.
Then there’s this: A bad cold/flu is circulating in the U.K. and Europe. It appears that it’s not Covid-19, as people test negative. But, it’s noticeable that the cold/flu is circulating so early. If this isn’t here already it will be shortly. Could this be a mutated version of Covid, and one that doesn’t show up on a lateral flow test? Probably not. But, it’s something to consider. https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-58624295
Thanks TK!

As the Delta variant wave of Covid-19 begins to recede in the U.S., experts are proclaiming the worst is behind us. Well, maybe. Let’s hope. But, the experts have been wrong before, many times, as have our political leaders. It’s time we reassess messaging. Caution and humility are warranted. https://www.forbes.com/sites/joshuacohen/2021/10/05/experts-say-worst-of-covid-19-is-behind-us-but-theyve-been-wrong-before-caution-in-messaging-is-warranted/
