It was on the evening news that Idaho has the highest number of cases of Covid-19 in ICU’s in the nation. About 50% of doctors and nurses have quit due to burnouts. The state has no indoor mask mandates.
Yes, it is a RED state.
Booster shot up-date: Overall, I feel fine. Like the second shot, last night, I suddenly felt profoundly tired. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling feverish and then woke up a bit later feeling chilled; a little muscle soreness today. I decided to skip the gym today–out of an abundance of caution and laziness. But other than that, A-OK.
Their reasons range from fears of getting a second debilitating case of COVID to uncertainty about when they will become eligible for an additional shot, to simply wanting the $100 Walmart gift card one state offered to entice reluctant people to get primary shots.
No one knows exactly how many Americans have received unauthorized extra shots, but it appears to be a lot. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated it was over 1.1 million people in an Aug. 13 report, which collected data before regulators had cleared extra doses.
I suspect this is one reason third vaccine numbers are above new vaccines.

I pasted the meat of the article above so you could see it. It’s after I mentioned you.
Thanks Vicki! 🙂
I am curious as to reasoning for age grouping for kids vaccines.
12 year olds are cleared for adult size vaccine. 11 year olds are cleared for one third (smallest dose possible currently) of adult size vaccine. There is a risk of myocarditis and pericarditis that has caught enough attention for at least two countries to limit older group to a single vaccine. I have not seen any discussion of this in the US but may have missed it.
I wonder if a parent of a 12ish year old child will be able to request the lower dose vaccine. I also wonder if that is a better choice than stopping at one vaccine of the higher dose.
It’s going to be interesting what student vaccination rates will be once the 5-11 vaccines are ready at the end of this month or early November. Cambridge schools will have a vaccination mandate for all students and those unvaccinated can remain in school but will not be allowed to participate in any extra curricular activities.
Very interesting. Thanks Philip. I not sure I agree with a mandate for a vaccine for kids that is not close to either fully approved or having enough data. Another reason for remote. I do understand the extra curricular activities if masks are impossible.
Can minor students get a vaccination without parent’s permission? It suddenly occurred to me.
In the U.S., the core of the pandemic has shifted to Alaska, Idaho, Montana, and parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Significant lessening in intensity in most of the South. I think a shift towards the Northeast is possible, but we have a better wall in place (better vaccination rates) AND those breakthroughs who do get infected are less likely to get severe disease.
Two items of note in this morning’s perusing of Covid news:
1. Europe is definitely seeing a resurgence (I believe it’s a spillover from Eastern Europe, and some seasonality involved, too), and it’s not due to more testing. In fact, test positivity is increasing quite a bit in several European countries, including the Netherlands.
2. That bad cold/flu I was talking about that’s hit the UK and Europe (my daughter had it in London – days of high fever and cough are main symptoms) is not showing up as influenza or Covid (she tested negative twice). It’s a curious phenomenon that bears watching. It could very well just be a rhinovirus. But, it’s early for a widespread rhinovirus to impact large swaths of the population.
Auburn reported only 8 students and 2 staff through Thursday. It will be interesting to see numbers next week.
Framingham had two entire classes in quarantine and has yet to report more than a handful of cases. I understand quarantine doesn’t mean all have covid but two classes out of school for a few?
Of course we have no idea how many family members and friends are impacted by this
The state positivity rate is now 1.84% compared to 2.98% last month.
One person pointed out VT is now into cold weather whereas MA and CT are not. And then there is this…..and as always, it is hard to know if she is accurate.
VT will be running above normal temps along with the rest of New England through the coming week. Very limited chill there so far other than a few radiational cooling mornings.
A.M.O. ?
Thanks, TK. Is its normal lower than our normal? I suspect then that temp won’t drive many more indoors in VT than they are here.
To the persons comment link, I’m finding that VT is doing a whole lot better in schools than we are. Of course it has fewer students
School positives last week. Continuing a slow decline which is sure better than the opposite, but still well above the first six months of this year
Thanks TK!

Awesome news. Thank you for updating.

Sounds like a very positive trend to me.
Well, this is curious…..
