The FDA recently announced that all people over 18 who received the J&J vaccine should get another dose as early as two months after the first one. To me, the following is a confusing statement by Dr. Fauchi:
“I think that they should feel good about it because what the advisers to the FDA felt is that given the data that they saw, very likely this should have been a two dose vaccine to begin with.”
I did not get J&J, but if I did, I would be wondering if I am putting at risk the vulnerable people that I come in contact with since now it sounds like, in a sense, I am not fully vaccinated. Once I get the booster (really the missing second dose?), how long will it be until I needed another dose (a true booster?)? And so on…
From what I understand, the J&J efficacy is lower than the Pfizer and Moderna. I’m not Joshua but yes, maybe it should have been a 2 shot like the others from the beginning.
I myself got the 2 Pfizer shots which were 3 weeks apart iirc. Thereafter a few months later got my third (booster).
I found this. I see this as a fail that sadly will have consequences. I know of a fair amount of folks who were hesitant to receive a vaccine at all but ended up choosing the single dose JJ. I seriously doubt the majority of folks with that mindset will have a second vaccine. In addition, it only feeds into the doubt and lack of trust many Americans have.
Note that this graph shows doses administered, not people vaccinated. Many people got two doses of Moderna or Pfizer. So, the smallness of J&J is exaggerated.
Thank you and interesting. I don’t recall whether JJ was available in the first few months when moderna and pfeizer were introduced. I wonder if those months saw the largest number of vaccines
Well he sees we need to address this immediately. Will we?
Short answer. No.
For all my muted criticism of Gottlieb he’s a brilliant mind and solid professional. I wish he was Biden’s nominee for the FDA. Because he served before under Trump I don’t think Biden would do it.
Yep. My vote went for no also. Maybe …just maybe ….you and I and others will be surprised !!!

The J&J was only a one shot because at the time, it was perceived to be the strongest but in reality it’s actually the weakest of the vaccines.
I initially wanted the J&J since only one shot was “necessary” but now I’m glad that the B&W had only the two shot Pfizer. 🙂
If the B&W had choices I certainly would have gone with the JJ.
Whew! 😉
Absolutely true….and why some are waiting. We still have a lot to learn about all of the vaccines.
LONG Covid is still a mystery as well.
I did not realize that J&J’s usage was so low in the US:

You may recall the AY. sub-lineage discussion last week, which I referenced. It has Gottlieb’s attention: https://twitter.com/ScottGottliebMD/status/1449803423906418691
