Wednesday October 20 2021 Forecast (7:38AM)

DAYS 1-5 (OCTOBER 20-24)

A midweek warm-up, not the level we saw a lot in the first half of the month, but it’ll be noticeable as high pressure slides south of New England and winds shift around to west and southwest through Thursday. A warm front passing by early Thursday will bring some clouds but right now I think any rainfall stays to the north. The low pressure area parenting this warm front will also drag a cold front through the region on Friday with perhaps a passing shower, favoring the early part of the day, and a return to cooler weather as we head toward the weekend. With a trough hanging about and some energy nearby and the front just offshore, we may be a little unsettled for part of Saturday, though it does not look all that bad. Fair weather returns for Sunday, but the core of a cool Canadian air mass will be arriving at that time and with some very cold air aloft we’ll see some diurnal cloud development that day as well.

TODAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 65-72. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TONIGHT: Clear evening. Increasing clouds overnight. Patchy ground fog interior low elevations. Lows 41-48. Wind WSW under 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy to partly sunny morning with brief light rain possible mainly in southern NH. Partly to mostly sunny thereafter. Highs 68-75. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Lows 52-59. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of rain showers, mainly during the morning. Highs 60-67. Wind SW shifting to NW 10-20 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 45-52. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain in the morning. Partly cloudy afternoon with isolated showers possible. Highs 55-62. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 40-47. Wind N 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Variably cloudy. Highs 51-58. Wind N 10-20 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (OCTOBER 25-29)

High pressure is expected to bring fair weather October 25-26, cool to start, then moderating temperatures. The high slips off to the east and the next low pressure area moves through the Great Lakes and into southeastern Canada later in the period with milder air here and eventually a rain shower threat as a a frontal system approaches.

DAYS 11-15 (OCTOBER 30 – NOVEMBER 3)

Continued uncertainty regarding the pattern evolution. Continuing to lean toward a slow evolution toward blocking with high pressure north / low pressure south, but not quite sure yet if we’ll be on the drier or wetter side of the pattern. Initially, leaning toward the drier side with high pressure more in control here.

    1. For sure.

Have to put it behind them.

Today is a must win. I can see them getting 1 more in Houston, but odds aren’t good for them to win 2 down there.

    2. I fell asleep on the couch at some point during the 7th and woke up the bottom of the 9th. I thought my eyes just were not focused yet when I saw the score.

  1. Thank you, TK.

Sox lost. No excuses. Should have built up a bigger lead. Had opportunities to do so. But, umpiring -balls and strikes – is a big problem in baseball (as is poor refereeing in football). The 9th inning’s trajectory was in part determined by bad umpiring . The Sox could have easily escaped with the score tied at 2 had Castro been called out on strikes. And, there is no question that he should have been called out on strikes.

I liked the Eovaldi call, especially at home in the 9th inning of a tie game, and you really don’t have a closer (glaring weakness on this team). Might as well put your best pitcher on the mound, keep it tied, and hope to win in the bottom half to take a commanding 3 to 1 lead in games. Didn’t work out (aided by the umpire). That’s okay. But, then bringing in Martin Perez was a mistake. With the score 3-2 there was still a chance the Sox come back. He’s a mediocre pitcher at best. Should not be used in high-leverage spots, ever.

Houston has a slight edge in talent over the Sox, and the comeback may propel them to win the series. We’ll see.

    1. I recall being told too many times to count that you never argue with an umpire. You suck it up and move on. That is in part because it is useless and in greater part because it disrupts the focus on the game and creates a negative focus. Interestingly, you could argue that is pretty much what happened when Cora had his meltdown in the third.

  2. Thank you, JJ.

1770 was an eventful year, weather-wise, in addition to it being the year of the Boston massacre.

The massacre occurred in March. It was a very cold month, with lots of snow.

And now, JJ reminds us that we also had a hurricane that year, in October.

  3. I have not seen a door forecast recently. My double doors are closing together enough that the cat cannot open them. Works for me. I love to have him spend time down here; but since I’m allergic, his sleeping on my bed isn’t a good idea

    1. I can report that the door situation at the Historical Society is back to normal for this time of year. But, some of the furniture in our house (pieces that I built) seem like they may be permanently expanded. I never saw this happen before. I will wait until we start heating the house before I go crazy “adjusting” things with a hand plane!

      1. Wow. I can’t say as I have ever seen that either. Thank you for your report, but please keep us updated.

  4. Silver lining. Even if the Sox lose today and lose the series, what we’re seeing from Sale tonight should give us confidence about next year. Sure, he’s given up 2 hits. But this is the best line-up in baseball. And, the command he’s had of all his pitches has been impressive, along with the speed of his fastball. Very encouraging for the future. I like Sale, personally. Such a competitor. Such a no nonsense player, who never gives excuses. Eovaldi is similar. That’s a terrific 1-2 combination, going forward.

    1. What is inexplicable is the sudden drought in Red Sox hitting. Talk about going from scalding hot to ice cold. After tearing the cover off the ball for game after game, they’ve managed 3 hits in the last 13 innings and 0 runs. That’s not only bad. That’s weird.
