Preemptive…..now? Although I understand this, with all of the deaths and long term illness Delta has caused, why is Omicron pushing some to act when Delta didn’t?
From CNBC
“ New York City is imposing a vaccine mandate for all private sector employers as a preemptive measure to fight a surge of Covid cases this winter, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday.
The mandate will go into effect on Dec. 27, de Blasio said.
“We’ve got omicron as a new factor, we’ve got the colder weather, which is really going to create additional challenges with the delta variant, we’ve got holiday gatherings,” de Blasio told MSNBC Monday morning. “We in New York City have decided to use a preemptive strike to really do something bold to stop the further growth of Covid and the dangers it’s causing to all of us.”
The gathering in Times Square on New Year’s Eve could be interesting as a “potential” super spreader even though it is an outside activity. Will only fully vaccinated be able to participate?
If the hype of Omicron gets more people vaccinated and additional measures being put into place then so be it.
Very good point. I’m curious about impact of that and an increasing number of vaccine passport mandates
Only problem, is if it turns out to be just hype (and it may not) confidence in our health folks will slip further. Just like weather when corporate dictates hype and folks blame Mets, folks will blame health folks and not media….unless health folks finally make a United front
Only fully vaccinated and no children under 5 without an adult. Read that without laughing.
Can’t!
Hahaha.
We are so busy going on and on about vaccines and rarely if ever mention how critically important masks are. I feel that ship of fools sliding a bit deeper.
Just getting caught up on last several days – super late comment but Vicki – is your son okay? Hoping he’s asymptomatic or just with very mild symptoms!
And thanks again to all for allowing me my soapbox last week. The kind comments were so appreciated.
One minor follow up specifically re: Fauci – I find myself very conflicted re: coming to grips with Fauci’s statements re: masks at the outset of the pandemic. I understand it was along the lines of “the end justifies the means” when he said masks aren’t helpful – and I get that we did not have enough masks at that time – however for me personally to hear a doctor – a doctor who specialized in infectious diseases – state unequivocally that masks wouldn’t help mitigate the spread of a respiratory illness seemed to me – to put it mildly – both wrong and dangerous and – 100 percent unethical. I also always wary of people who feel that when they are justified by whatever reason (and it can even be a good one) they can throw honesty or (most importantly) actual black and white facts to the wind – as pretty dangerous trait – especially when they are in a position of power.
In the extreme this logic – the “I know better than you and I can lie to you to protect your best interests/I can lie to serve a more important goal as I define it…” is where we find the slippery slope to fascism and a parade of other horrible things….
So I’m not to trying to “take down a saint” and clearly he is a work animal – but frankly I see a great deal of arrogance in Fauci – especially in his seemingly complete self-contentment about that early lie when it is brought up now – a lie that literally could have -and likely did – cause unnecessary actual deaths in real people who perhaps would have worn a mask or mitigated (distance) more absent his words and who caught covid early on. He doesn’t seem to have a moment’s hesitation regarding the ethically of that decision and that statement. But words have power and Fauci is in a position of incredible power right now. That power must be treated with great respect. Ever since those initial comments I have viewed him and his reports with skepticism and the knowledge that he can lie if/when he feels it is necessary and/or in the best interest of the public or for political or policy reasons. Lie in the face of clear facts if he feels the ends justify the means. That is not my ideal from a physician.
Thanks Mama. He had a tough first night I think but said he thinks it is behind him today. He tends to play it down so I don’t worry. I’m praying his wife stays clear.
I am so sorry he’s symptomatic and hope he is able to recover rapidly and FULLY!
Thank you very much.
We’re observing spikes in hospitalizations across a very wide swath of the U.S.
European caseload and hospitalizations are very high, with limited tempering in a few countries. Not enough, however, to really lighten the burden.
U.K. booster campaign bearing fruit: A further decoupling of cases and hospitalizations/deaths.
Regarding Fauci, I have a lot of respect. But, I do wish he was more humble. He’s made obvious mistakes, some more excusable than others. He gives off an air of infallibility, also on the origins of the virus having nothing to do with gain of function research or U.S. support of research efforts in China. The jury is out on this. Fauci is too quick to dismiss it. I do NOT regard this as Fauci’s fault. But, I do fault him for not allowing for the fact that we made some mistakes by supporting our adversary’s research efforts.
Thanks for sharing this Joshua. I respect & defer to your experience and expertise in this arena and thus am really grateful to hear that your thoughts re Fauci have at least some degree of overlap to mine. I often wonder if I’m unreasonable in my expectations to have ethical leaders – as logically for one to become the head of almost anything likely that person sold their soul long, long ago – maybe just to get to middle management/state senate, jr director…..
Oops. Jen got a bit testy. I mean really….at home tests “free” through insurance. What could possibly go wrong there?
Thanks TK.
