Oh brother. Why are Republicans so much against “science” these days? They never give up spreading totally false information to the public.
Thanks Joshua. Btw, only one “free” article left, at least for me anyway.
Great article. I will share. I saw a discussion on this with a gentleman from NIH. Johnson literally makes this stuff up. He needs to be removed and it disgusts me that he isn’t. He is a very dangerous man…not to mention twisted.
He said the NIH had recommended mouthwash. Of course it did not. It came from some study in France.
It may have been NCIB not NIH.
My daughter has Covid-19. She just tested positive after exhibiting mild symptoms: Fever, cough, and fatigue. She was vaccinated in late August. She must isolate for 10-14 days, and obviously had to cancel plans to travel. She was going to visit her mother. Her London choir had already canceled performances under the new rules issued a couple of days ago. And, she must work from home – even after her isolation period – as offices are almost all shut down for the time being.
In the Netherlands, the booster campaign is ramping up. Leave it to the Dutch to do this as systematically as possible. They want ALL citizens >55 to be boosted by the end of December. The government sends by email, text, and regular mail invitations to get boosted in vaccination halls or at PCP offices. They started with the oldest and most at-risk folks, and are now already boosting (yesterday, today and tomorrow) all who were born between 1954 and 1956. On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, the entire 1956-1958 group; On Wednesday through Friday, the 1958-1960 group; and so on and so forth. Note, some had already been boosted (immunocompromised, for example).
Oh dear, I’m sorry to hear this. Prayers for your daughter. So far her symptoms sound much like my son’s. I pray they stay the same. He was vaccinated four months ago also with J&J.
Interesting that she has to quarantine 10-14 days. My son can return when he has a negative test which was either five or six days. I am glad she can work from home
Re boosters. Appointments here seem a bit easier to find but they are still difficult
So sorry about your daughter, Joshua. At least she was vaccinated which makes all the difference. It still stinks that one has to get Covid at all, even a “mild” case.
Interesting that performances in London been cancelled. The Boston Pops and other venues here are still on schedule to continue as far as I know, albeit with a masked audience.
Should indoor holiday events be cancelled here in the U.S.? Hmmmm.
There was an article in the globe yesterday ….I think I mentioned it. Health folks from local medical facilities are gathering with family only and only if they are vaccinated and take a home test. Many said test three days out and then day of. We will do that if all goes well….I pray.
I am saddened by the number of large gatherings we are having. Out this way as I’ve said the majority are unmasked. I don’t get it. Last year we had all sorts of mitigation practices in place. This year we act as if all is fine. The many virtual events last year are no longer which is a shame. I really enjoyed them.
Vicki, the Boston Baroque performance of Messiah this weekend is being live-streamed, if that’s something you would enjoy. There’s a fee for the livestream, but that supports the organization as it gets back on its feet. My daughter and son-in-law were planning to go and hear it live, but they have decided to do it the virtual way instead.
I’d love that. I’ll look for it. Thank you and good for them
Tickets purchased. I’m very excited. Thank you
The Pops and Ballet are also requiring vaccination proof for both audience and performers.
Also very good to hear.
Joshua – I am sorry to hear that about your daughter. I hope that she gets through it quickly with only minor symptoms.
Tests here in the U.S. should be free for all like in the U.K. Not long ago there was a test site on Boylston St. in Boston at the former Lord & Taylor for $80. The site is now closed altogether, thankfully.
I am not finding the BinaxNOW on Amazon. It says it has it but the link takes you to a different brand
I’m surprised Biden hasn’t considered the government give out free tests for all U.S. citizens who request. I guess his advisers have never considered it either.
You would think that the CDC would come up with the idea. If vaccines are free, why not tests as well? Duh?!
Thanks, everyone, for your thoughts. Luckily my daughter is young (28) and healthy. She’s also vaccinated. Her chances of getting severe disease are very small. The British are strict about isolation, especially those who are symptomatic. She is definitely symptomatic.
Philip, there isn’t a lockdown in London or the UK, but many events are being canceled (choir performances, for example). When there are indoor (and even outdoor, like soccer matches) events with crowds they’re introducing a Covid pass system that’s similar to France’s: Negative rapid test and fully vaccinated are allowed in. People are being urged to work from home. Mask mandates are now countrywide.
As far as I know, anyone can attend an NFL game regardless of vaccination status. No proof of tests, nothing.
It will be interesting what happens for the SB. Maybe that will be different, hopefully.
Certainly no mask mandates nationwide here in U.S. Each state and municipality doing their own thing.
Take that back. Only public transit mask mandate is nationwide.
The U.S. data is now haphazardly being reported. Delays in reporting, back logs … just sheer laziness on the part of state public health departments in the U.S. (and no pressure from the Biden Administration to require better reporting! They have the authority to do so in a public health emergency, but apparently don’t want to offend folks). And so, every day, independent groups like BNO Newsroom and Johns Hopkins have to cull together as best they can the data. This, my friends, is inexcusable. In any case, the data for December 8th is out:
– New cases: 149,386
– 7-day average: 120,609 (+1,703)
– In hospital: 63,289 (+2,067)
– In ICU: 14,988 (+345)
– New deaths: 1,833
– 7-day average: 1,274
The tv evening news opened with a very sad story about a married couple who both died of Covid at the same time. They were unvaccinated and refused treatment.
The name of the couple nor the state was revealed. Of course one can easily guess which “color” that state was most likely.
Another instance of the tail wagging the dog.
Joshua I hope your daughter gets better soon.
Thanks, JJ. Spoke with her today. She’s got a cough, fever, and fatigue. But nothing out of the ordinary, thankfully. She’s taking it easy. She’s Pfizer vaccinated – 2nd dose in late August.
UK caseload surging. Hospitalization curve’s slope is flatter, with moderate increases – indicates a fair amount of decoupling – but still the pressure on NHS hospitals is nearly constant.
Joshua, hope your daughter gets well very soon. Make sure she gets her booster when she becomes eligible in the spring. I am expecting to get #4 in March. No doubt boosters are going to be mandated for everyone eventually.
Local colleges/universities are planning on booster mandates very soon for all students and staff.
I read a while ago that they have to comply with OSHA mandate for 100+ employees
Philip, to answer your question the other day, my son can return to work after his second negative PCA test. If all goes well, that will be Monday
Today’s U.S. data:
– New cases: 152,672
– In hospital: 64,978 (+992)
– In ICU: 15,209 (+74)
– New deaths: 2,104
– 7-day average: 1,312
Thank you, Joshua. I’m unclear. I don’t understand how many days each number represents. I think you mean just today but what does the seven day average of 1,312 represent?
C-19 for 12-11 is ready.

Your no-hype southeastern New England weather blog!
Thanks TK.
The Boston Archdiocese has instituted a mask order during all services until mid-January. The only exception are for speakers.
My latest is on Senator Ron Johnson advice to use mouthwash as a Covid-19 treatment.

How is Omicron doing with regard to severity of symptoms?
And then there is this.
Someone mentioned yesterday that Amazon has BivaxNOW for $14 for 2. I got a few more kits at Walmart for $14 for 2.
