Friday December 31 2021 Forecast (7:31AM)

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 31 – JANUARY 4)

We’re about to change the year but keep the same pattern. And so it goes. The final day of 2021 will feature low level moisture plaguing us at the surface with low clouds, fog, and patches of drizzle, while some upper level energy adds the chance of a few rain showers. This doesn’t change all that much this evening as we count down the final hours of the year and welcome 2022, which will open with an unsettled weekend. Low pressure tracks across the Northeast Saturday with periods of rain as the air will be too mild to support any freezing or frozen precipitation. A cold front does pull through the region on Sunday with a few more rain showers around, but as colder air finally does arrive any leftover precipitation would be snow showers at night, and then we get a sharp but brief shot of cold air Monday. But this pattern does not let cold hang around long and we’ll already be moderating by Tuesday with continued fair weather.

TODAY: Cloudy. Areas of fog and drizzle. Isolated to scattered rain showers. Highs 40-47. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

TONIGHT (NEW YEAR’S EVE): Cloudy. Areas of fog and drizzle. Isolated rain showers. Lows 38-45. Wind variable to S up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY (NEW YEAR’S DAY): Cloudy. Periods of rain. Highs 42-49. Wind SE to S 5-15 MPH.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Rain likely. Areas of drizzle and fog. Lows 38-45. Wind S to SW 5-15 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Areas of fog early. Highs 45-52. Wind SW 10-20 MPH shifting to W.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Chance of snow showers. Lows 20-27. Wind W 10-20 MPH shifting to NW, higher gusts.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 28-35. Wind NW 10-20 MPH, higher gusts. Wind chill below 20 at times.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 12-18. Wind NW 5-15 MPH. Wind chill below 10 at times.

TUESDAY: Sunny. Highs 33-40. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JANUARY 5-9)

Moderating temperatures early period. Mid period unsettled weather, track of low pressure to determine scope and type of precipitation. Fair, colder finish to the period.

DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 10-14)

Same overall pattern but a hint at a colder trend. One or two systems may bring precipitation threats.

  1. Good morning and thank you TK.
    Same ole, same ole.

Well at least we had record breaking December snowfall!

    What will January bring?

    1. but the GFS has been even more trash then again best to look at the ensembles which well has anything from an inside runner to OTS solution at this time.

I was thinking that this weekends storm (the second one) would have a chance because of some of the shifting teleconnections, during that time though we could see the change of the PNA going neutral to slightly positive certainly unfortunate that the NAO is going neutral at the same time. So what the EURO is showing is not out of the question. Of course none of that energy is even close to the west coast and we have a few systems that will be moving over NA beforehand so lots can and will change. I think the 6 to 8 day period is certainly a good shot.

      1. Perhaps. We shall see.

I also thought we had a “chance” for Sunday night/Monday, but NOT looking too good at the moment. Looks like OTS.

We’ll be watching for the 7th. Let’s see if the Euro shows
        any consistency with today’s runs.

  2. Thank you, TK!

I was going through the photos on my phone the other day and I believe that these four represent 2021 to a tee:

My (and I am sure all of ours) attempt to book a vaccine appointment on the state’s website:

And this sums it all up. My student meant “wifi”:

    Here’s to a less-crazy 2022!
    Happy New Year!

    Blessings.

    1. LMAO Captain, especially the last one !

      Happy New Year !

I reported my Covid positive date to our school nurses and they replied back that I can return on Wed, Jan 5th.

On one hand, I´ll admit to be happy missing the chaos.

One the other, I´m trying to work on sub plans, which drive me crazy. Sub plans are a great motivator for never missing a school day.

    2. Thanks for these. Yes, that last one is especially hilarious. My wifi and I both got a much-needed laugh from this!

    1. Very sad indeed, 76 is somewhat “young” these days. Same age as my father when he died.

I imagine a hundred years ago, that age would have been what “95” is today.

      1. I agree that 76 is young. My mom, like your dad, was 76. Her angel day is January 7. 76 is also young for such a long battle with Alzheimer Disease. Such a horrible disease.

          1. So sorry SSK. It is. My dad, Macs mom and her three sisters, just too many and we don’t seem to do a lot to address it

    2. Very nice & funny lady . Ch5 & chronicle also had a sad loss with the passing of 76 yr old Mary Jacobson . I am a lifelong channel 5 watcher & chronicle.

    3. Vicki I did not open that up I assumed it was for Betty white . Sad day indeed & also the loss of a former Celtic player I believe .

  3. An undercast day at several of the ski resorts! My son is at Gore today and texted me this picture from I’d say about 3000-3500’ elevation. Both the base area and summit were socked in but it was clear in the middle making some of the surrounding mountaintops look like islands in the clouds…

Earlier it was a similar scene at Killington and actually sunny near the summit but I see it is socked in again now on their webcams.

  4. Thanks TK. Happy New Year all 🙂

2021 will go down as the warmest year on record in the city of Boston. As we recall from over the summer, there is some possibility that the ASOS there has been running slightly too warm. However, based on surrounding climate sites, it’s certainly safe to say 2021 is solidly a top 5 and likely top 3 warmest year. Providence will be either 1 or 2, or a tie.

It didn’t do it so much with record breaking extremes as with the consistent, unrelenting positive anomalies which have come to define the modern era. While not every year will be
as warm locally, you can certainly expect that trend to continue…

    1. Some will see consistent warm anomalies and dry or wet. While other’s see extremes. Us here in New England is heavily regulated by the Gulf of Maine which is one of the fastest warming bodies of water on the planet, This year was no exception. Warm Gulf of Maine = warmer Fall and winter temperatures. It makes complete sense we don’t generally get the extremes that the south and central part of the country gets. Of course we have had our fair share of extreme weather.

Lets see what mother nature punches us with in 2022. I bet another top 5 warmest years 😉

        1. It is indeed and what is sad is that the Lobster population will continue to struggle. There is no more Lobster industry south of Cape Cod and Cape cod they are going up into NH/Maine waters to fish. It will become a point in which lobstering won’t be able to be done commerically in New England Waters.
This is due to a series of reasons.
          1. Warming temperatures are killing off the Larvae stages.
          2. Warming temperatures are bringing warmer water organisms into the Gulf of maine which can hunt and kill younger lobster.
          3. Warming ocean temperatures increases acidification eroding the calcium carbonate of lobster shells making them weaker to predation and disease.

  5. Seattle has had quite the year. Record heat 4/5 months ago, and the coldest temperatures in more than 30 years this week (along with snow).

By the way, Betty White has passed away at 99, just weeks before her 100th.

  6. I’m heading for the NH Seacoast for a short time this evening before counting down the end of 2021 and start of 2022 with my mom.

In case I don’t get a change to post again before then, I wish you all a happy new year!

Thank you for your contributions to this blog during the past year.

Tomorrow in the comments I’ll continue my annual tradition of my sort-of-but-not-completely-science-based weather predictions for the year ahead…

    Cheers!

  7. I am so saddened by Mary Richardson’s (76) passing. Chronicle was (is) a good program, and I always enjoyed seeing her present.

      1. Just read about Sam Jones.

I’m always a bit melancholic at the very end of the year and even the first few days of the new year, but this year it’s magnified by these losses today.

        1. My youngest said today thaf so many hold on till Christmas is over. I know my mom did. Maybe that is why so many today.

We are supposed to toast Betty at midnight. I know I will…and Mary and Sam.

  8. Happy New Year all! First weather post of 2022 is in progress and I’ll message here when it’s done.
