The signs are there, Alaska warming, Europe cold and snowy, MJO drifting toward phase 8 (trust me, non-met’s, you may not know what the MJO is but you want to see this if you are rooting for cold/snow here).

I have been a bit concerned about a potential snow event later next week. Also, with the “new” want-to-be regime fighting with the stubborn same-old-pattern, we continue to see models having difficulty predicting the medium range.

Taking all this into account, and adding on a hunch I have, I’ve decided to back off on the snow threat for late next week and also back off on any potential pattern change for the next 7 to 10 days, and possibly a little beyond that.

I’m going to stick with the more-of-the-same overall mild and now drier than normal pattern with periods of colder weather that don’t have the ability to sustain themselves. I still need more solid evidence before I start jumping on the big pattern change bandwagon.

So, sparing the day-to-day detail of weather systems, a good summary will be that we’ll see minor systems, changeable temperatures, and limited precipitation during the week ahead.

TONIGHT: Increasing clouds. Low 24-29. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy, then clearing late. High 46-51. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Low 30-35. Wind WNW 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. High 37-42. Wind NW 15-25 MPH and gusty.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 18. High 36.

THURSDAY: Cloudy. Chance of light snow. Low 22. High 36.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 18. High 39.

SATURDAY: Variably cloudy. Low 26. High 43.

  2. NAO isn’t negative yet, but the phase 8 of the MJO should do the trick. Although the question is how long will it be till we get into that phase.

  4. I agree the anticipated pattern change will not happen as it is speculated to do. I am interested/anxious to see the late week storm verify, if it does I think that could swing some more people into the pattern change is possible mindset, myself included. At this time I don’t see it, with NAO still positive, yes an MJO flirting with phase 8 shouldn’t be taken lightly, I just think that the models have had too much rainwater to drink this winter and as soon as we get signs things are moving toward a pattern change it reverts quicker than the story can get going. I am interested in Mondays models to see where it puts things, hoping for snow.

  6. Coastal- I tried to be the better person on your first post. You were way off on your comments that you made to both myself and Vicki. But you have stuff going on and I gave you the benifit of doubt on your comments. We in no way did anything wrong, you are the person at fault now. Your telling me now that I am ruining this blog, and this is a social outlet for myself and Vicki. And to boot your adding up our blogs. I have never done anything wrong here and neither has Vicki. I understand you have family things going on, we all do. I told you in my first post how sorry I was. How dare you pull this crap on me. What did I do to you.     1. I haven’t read your above entry because I don’t care. I come here for weather releated discussions and facts. Not to read that crap above which represnts exactly why you are ruining this blog. When I log in and see 90+ post I think there is storm brewing. So after sifting through all the crap you post I find out how your day was and nothing about the weather. You should go join one of vickis blog and leave your crap over there. Come back when you have something fitting to say.

        1. The only matter there really is to handle here is that we need to stick to the guidelines.

          Nobody is required to “get along” with another person. Not every personality jives with every other one. Fine.

              This blog will not turn into what WBZ’s has, and like me or not, I will do what I have to do to keep it from turning into that.

              My son reads this blog on a daily basis. Many of my friends do the same. I’m keeping this stuff from taking place again.

              1. I had planned to wait until after the game to say more except you kept posting TK and I am upset enough to focus on that instead of the game.

                With all due respect TK, I believe both John and I were ready to move forward and Coastal continued to insult.

                I didn’t think either John or I had a problem co-existing. And if you choose to allow me to remain part of the blog, I will not have a problem going forward. I do have a problem being blatantly and unnecessarily insulted. If you remember last week, coastal was more than insulting with regard to who was making the proper weather predictions and as far as I can tell weather predictions are weather related.

                I guess I need to know if in fact insults are all right here because I do not feel either John or I did anything to warrant being told we are ruining the blog. I believe most everyone has been talking about the super bowl – which of course is not weather related -yet we were singled out.

                I have said several times today I would like to move on. How many times does coastal get to take pot shots?

    I think it’s too late in the game even if the mjo goes into phase 8! Time is running out and look the 12z euro just a ton of warmth. Granted I think it’s overdone with the warmth but we shall see.

    1. A trough in the west is not what we want to see. That model has had it’s own share of problems with the long range.
      I think it’s going to take 7-10 days for the MJO to get to phase 8, and I’m not sure if there will be a lag effect from that affecting our pattern.

  8. Certainly hope the Euro model doesn’t verify. If it does (extended forecast suggests an entire week of 50 degree weather, which is insane; temperatures 10-15 degrees above normal as far as the eye can see, with a few exceptions!), we’re headed for record warmth this winter. Not just top 10, but perhaps one of the 3 warmest on record, maybe even warmer than that.

      1. I mean medium and long-range (next week and beyond), which look more like a mid to late April forecast than mid February. Rain and very mild temperatures.

          1. Drove to a friend near Albany this weekend. Western Massachusetts is beautiful but it’s so strange to see barely any snow out there, not even much ice build-up on the rocks, and ponds and lakes that are hardly frozen.

  10. The 18z GFS still has a storm that just barely misses us to the east for next weekend, following that is a brief cold shot before another week of above average temps.
    I really do hope the MJO can go to phase 8 and work it’s magic on this pattern.

  11. TK I had a thought. This is a weather blog and it’s clear we stay. Everyone. John had asked about a gardening blog the other day. I don’t know if you planned to set one up. If not I can. It can be for anyone here or anyone else. And it can be for chat too. Chat naturally comes on blogs when people start to get to know each other and this might be a way to move it from here. Just a thought.

    I believe the lack of weather has added to off chat but I also agree with coastal that is the focus here. Let me know if that works.

          1. I disagree with you. You know very well we did not do anything wrong. We get attacked once and we were mature about it and had all intentions of moving on. Than we get attacked again for a second time. So coastal can just insult multiple times here and get away with it. Sounds like bz site to me. Your blog and I respect it as I always have. But I feel you just want to sweep this under the rug because coastal is involved. Well I think that sucks, and is not fair to myself, vicki or fellow bloggers.   12. This is so typical of the Pats — not showing up for the full 60 minutes. Too many times they have had to come from behind.

    1. Not sure about that safety. Suspect missed play. A GB doesn’t usually hurl a ball mid field to get rid of it

  14. I cannot believe the Patriots are ahead at the half and going to get the ball to start the 2nd half. It feels like the Giants should be up by 20 pts.

    This is more shocking to me than the weather of the last 4 months and that has been unbelievable !!

  15. If the Pat’s D holds up and Brady stays in that magical groove, it should be over. Big “If’s” but that was one heck of a drive. Brady went 10 for 10. Just unreal!!

    i’m all screwed up. the kids are crying, my wife is slamming doors and I have heartburn.

      1. I’m not sure……4 yrs ago I couldnt sleep after the game, I think eventually tonight I will be able to sleep as I didnt think Pats were a lock in this game. Not quite as depressing, bummer, but not depressing.

  25. Tough loss folks. At least your team was there to compete. Too many weapons on offense for giants as I suspected all along.

  27. No consistent offensive rhythm for the Pats. Didn’t seem like the had any real gameplan, just trying to force things. They looked akward all night. Thought the defense played well enough to win.

    1. The Giants yet again looked like they wanted it more. I told a friend of mine all week that it wasn’t a good sign that they weren’t firing back at the Giants comments. The Giants were confident and let that be known. The Pats just took it and didn’t fight back, and it showed in the game. UGH!
