  1. Thanks TK.

Philadelphia will become the first major U.S. city to reinstate its indoor mask mandate.

    1. The toll this is taking on our life expectancy numbers is unreal. It’s bring us down to levels of emerging market countries and even some relatively poor countries. Not good.

    2. No surprise that it’s a Trump-supporting county. Amazing how Pennsylvania has turned from what was once deep blue to deep “purple”.

  2. School numbers continue to increase slowly for both students and staff

Columns are date range, student numbers, staff numbers

    3/03-3/9 1,345. 372
    3/09-3/16 1,597 425
    3/17-3/24 1,993 601
    3/24-3/31 2,441 804

    3/31-4/06 2,782 984

    1. Doubtful. It’s also less relevant now with Omicron. If they did anything – which I don’t think they will – it would be to test folks prior to large gatherings. I’ve experienced this a few times this winter, prior to attending a Bar Mitzvah and a wedding reception.

  3. Life expectancy did improve a lot in the U.S. and elsewhere from 1900 to 1990. But, it has stagnated in the U.S. since the 1990s (slope of curve got flatter over time). Shockingly so. It has not stagnated elsewhere. It continued to be a steep upward slope in most other wealthy nations, the exception being the Covid years. But, other wealthy nations haven’t been impacted as much as the U.S. by Covid. So, all in all the life expectancy numbers in the U.S aren’t good and haven’t been good for a long time. That’s alarming. There are many factors, of course, not just public health. But, we really need to address this, because regressing isn’t normal, particularly when we spend much more than any other country in the world on healthcare.

  4. Steady rise in cases and modest increase in hospitalizations continue in Massachusetts, along with a test positivity rate that is 3.42%. I don’t consider that rate concerning. But, the daily increase in test positivity suggests we’re in a wave of sorts. Let’s hope it’s only a ripple. I think we might be lucky and only have a ripple.

    1. The experts channel 5 showed seemed to think ripple and were quick to point out the uptick was coming off a very low level in the last 2 weeks. This is definitely not a return to things like a year ago.

Bottom line for each person: Do what makes you comfortable. We don’t need to go back to 2020 or even 2021 levels in terms of shutting things down.

    2. School numbers reflect the same, Joshua. We can add significantly to the positive numbers (school and in general) as we know we are not receiving accurate numbers. I don’t believe we are returning to previous levels. I do think we are foolish to rely on individuals doing the right thing….and even more foolish to not reinstate masking indoors.
