DAYS 1-5 (MAY 1-5)
High pressure will bring us splendid weather for the first day of May today, with 100% sunshine, light wind, but a significant temperature spread from shoreline to inland locations, very typical of spring time in New England. Enjoy today especially since the timing allows it to be on a day off for many. The weather “goes downhill” for several days following, starting with the approach of a warm front Monday bringing clouds and an evening rain threat. But that front never gets through the region, first being held back as a wave of low pressure forms on the front and passes to the south of us Monday night, then staying down there as a little bubble of high pressure builds across northern New England Tuesday. Another low pressure area approaches Tuesday night and passes by during Wednesday, and while guidance shows what looks like a low that wants to pass just northwest of our area, it won’t, as high pressure in eastern Canada keeps the boundary just to the south and the low follows it, redeveloping or “wobbling” along the boundary until its passing to our south and out to sea, bringing wet weather for Wednesday. Finally by Thursday we should get a push of drier but cool air from Canada for a break in the cloudiness and occasional wet weather of the first part of the week…
TODAY: Sunny. Highs 55-62 coastline, 63-70 inland, mildest interior valleys. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with developing coastal sea breezes.
TONIGHT: Increasing high clouds. Lows 42-49. Wind variable under 10 MPH.
MONDAY: Thickening overcast. Highs 54-61, coolest coast. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.
MONDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Periods of light rain. Patchy fog. Lows 45-52. Wind E up to 10 MPH.
TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy with a few glimpses of sun possible. Highs 57-64, coolest coast. Wind E up to 10 MPH.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Cloudy. Chance of rain overnight. Lows 46-53. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.
WEDNESDAY: Cloudy. Periods of rain. Areas of fog. Temperatures steady 47-54. Wind E 5-15 MPH.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Rain ends, clouds break, patchy fog dissipates. Lows 40-47. Wind N 5-15 MPH.
THURSDAY: Sun/cloud mix. Highs 57-64. Wind N 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.
DAYS 6-10 (MAY 6-10)
Large-scale pattern: Blocking with high pressure in eastern Canada and slowly eastward-moving low pressure areas to the south of that. We remain most vulnerable to cloudy and occasional wet weather in the May 6-8 period before drier/brighter weather later in the period. Temperatures below normal.
DAYS 11-15 (MAY 11-15)
Similar pattern should continue as we approach the half-way point of May, but the overall pattern should weaken somewhat and the appearance of more high pressure to the south of New England means that the warm-up potential is a little stronger, but also leaves us vulnerable to additional unsettled weather due to the boundary between that and the cooler high pressure in Canada. No chance on finding any day-to-day details this far in advance though. Check back for that!
Thanks TK.
Once we get past this unsettling week, Boston “should” finally be able to celebrate #6. 😉
B = 54.0” 🙂
W = 53.6”
I think if they have a chance of May measurable in ORH it’s the May 6-8 time frame, but we’ve gone as late as beyond the half way point of the month before still receiving measurable snow, so I’ll withhold final call for a while yet.
I absolutely love that you are keeping this alive. It has been fun. Go Philip!!!!
Thanks TK !
Good morning and thank you TK.
We’re at 53 so far. Let’s see how high it will go before
the sea breeze knocks it back some. 🙂
Thanks TK
This day in weather history goes back to May 1, 1854

Very interesting. Thank you.
Now this feels like Spring !
Mild, not too cool. Perfect !!!!
60 here now. 🙂
If current patern holds into the summer tropical systems that would approach the east coast would probably be suppressed south towards the middle Atlantic. Hopefully no hits here. Just a guess on my part.
Maybe we can avoid HHH temps as well.
Captain James Kirk thinks the East Coast may be more vulnerable this coming tropical season. I’ll share more of his videos going forward. He’s a good long range forecaster.
im starting to worry about the NE Caribbean/Bahamas for tropical activity. Only hurricane I was in was Dorian in 2019 literally 3 weeks after I moved here and lost power for 4 days. Hince why two weeks later I got a generator lol.
Some of the early hints point to a potentially more active than average season, but all the puzzle pieces aren’t in yet. But as we all know, you can still get walloped in a certain set of locations even with a quiet season (best example, Hurricane Andrew in an otherwise very quiet season). Never hurts to be prepared!
TK – Did Worcester receive measurable snow on May 18, 2002? Is that the date you referred to above?
Didn’t you mention over the years that WHW itself got a Trace (if not 0.1”) on that particular date? I remember here in Boston walking in my neighborhood and suddenly seeing sleet pellets fall around me. It was quite cold and I was only wearing a light raincoat.
It may have been east of them. I had measurable that day here in Woburn.
Thanks, TK.
My travelers arrived home from Charleston …isle of Palms to be more specific….around 3:00 this morning. It was awesome weather down that way. The house is once again filled with noise ❤️
TK – So what is the latest date in May that Worcester has had measurable snow? I know Boston is May 9-10, 1977 at 0.5”.
Worcester measurable May snowfall (numbers courtesy SAK)…
They missed measurable on May 18 2002, it was to their east.
Latest measurable snow, May 11 1945 with 1.5 inch.
On May 9 & 10 1977, they recorded 12.7 inches.
A snowfall of 0.3 inch occurred on May 4 1986.
On May 9 2020, they received 0.7 inch of snow.
Boston’s latest measurable snowfall: 0.5 inch occurred on May 10 in both 1938 & 1977.
There were snow showers in the Boston area as late as June 7 1816 (The Year Without A Summer) – volcanic eruption.
But knowing that measurable snow has occurred regionally as late as May 18, I generally go with about my birthday (May 20) to say it probably won’t happen any longer. That leaves just under 3 weeks before it’s really time to declare this. And even if guidance doesn’t show any snow between now & almost then, it means nothing. We already know how often guidance is that accurate more than a few days out. Most spring snow events (minor or otherwise) are not really “seen” by models until they are almost on top of us.
Thank you, TK.
Happy International Workers’ Day (May Day)!
The holiday has its origins in late 19th century America. But, it’s not celebrated here; perhaps because of its Marxist, or at least far left connotation. It’s somewhat of a taint and misrepresentation of an otherwise mostly innocuous celebration. Under communism, Eastern Europe was known for its elaborate May Day festivals. But, when I lived in Western Europe – certainly not communist – it was also an important holiday – similar in nature to our Labor Day – that led up to all the Victory and Liberation Days in early May that are still celebrated in all European countries.
I remember the weather almost always being really nice in the Netherlands the week of May 1st. School was out that week, which made the good weather even more enjoyable.
Thanks TK.
Brush fire on Quaker st I think it’s Uxbridge at lookout rock. My oldest and family were hiking and saw a bunch of kids running from the fire. One girl there said she knew one of kids.
Good grief.
And north bridge had yet another house fire and Framingham had a fire in an apartment building
Mu equipment is reading 73. It is in the sun, so that may be reading 2-3 degrees too high. It is CERTAINLY 70 here without a doubt. BEAUTIFUL day today!!!
Norwood is at 70. Logan is up to its usual disgusting tricks and is at 55 degrees!
The house fire in northbridge this am started when a person had just finished mowing his lawn and parked the mower under his deck. The mower sparked and set house on fire. My oldest has a neighbor that happened to a a few years ago.
Wow!
My wife told me about a house fire started from the sun shining on glass bottles stored on a porch. Crazy times!
Yikes.
My sil puts our mower in the garage.
Two multiple alarm fires in a handful of hours including most every community out here on top of the big Victorian a couple of nights ago and these guys have to be beyond exhausted.
Hopkinton is covering one of the stations out here
Hopefully this upcoming unsettled week will put an end to the fire dangers. Maybe a wet Mother’s Day as well? 🙁
Celtics did not do well today. They need to tie up the series next game.
Bucks are defending champions. It’s going to be a very tough series.
The Red Sox look absolutely horrid. This is Bloom’s problem. A very poorly constructed roster. If this continues all year, he will be gone. It’s early still, so they can right the ship. But, losing to the Orioles is inexcusable.
Last thing I’ll say about sports today. I just like a team to be competitive. Don’t have to win it all. But, I cannot stand it when `my’ team is really bad. During the last decade, the Red Sox have been either very good (5 years) or bad to very bad (5 years). There doesn’t seem to be a happy medium. It’s why I’m mostly happy with the Bruins. Always competitive. That’s what I care about most in a team.
Logan has a 17 mph sea breeze! That’s like opening the freezer door! PATHETIC!!
Yes, I felt it just now – well, mitigated a bit as I’m a few miles from Logan. Still a very nice day. Better this than 90F. Hold off the >85F days for as long as possible, then get through the 30-35 plus days of >85F, and at the end of that it’ll be mid to late September and I’ll feel normal again.
Didn’t penetrate too much this far in. Has fallen back to 67, but that isn’t bad at all. 🙂
I’m in Back Bay. Just checked my thermometer. It’s 59.8F. So, it’s definitely having an impact here.
For sure. It’s 55 at Logan, so you are doing a little better.
Two more structure fires in Sutton. along s and n bound 146. There is a point where I stop thinking something is a coincidence
I think there is a fire bug on the loose!
One wonders if there is a serial arsonist about. That happened here back in the 1970s.
We had one in Hopkinton and Holliston area in mid 1990s. We had to pull horses out of the barn a few times.
One of these is an old drive in theatre screen.
They know who kids are who set the one at lookout rock earlier
Joshua, ever notice there is pretty much a “day” for everything?
I’m waiting for “national clip your toenails day”. …. You know which one is the worst of all (for me, and this is my opinion)? Star Wars Day. “May the 4th be with you…” Horrendous. It sounds like you’re saying it with dental gauze in your mouth. I hate that one. And yes, I am a Star Wars fan. Again, just my opinion. If you like it, that’s your call. 🙂
You missed it, it was last week.
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=national%20clip%20your%20toe%20nails%20day
HAHAHAHA!!!
My snow shovels are now stored away. One step closer.
Outside water is on, hoses are out, some screens are up.
12z GFS … “classic” springtime pattern.
If it’s correct, many New Englanders will be asking the question “where is spring?” when the answer is actually “this is spring!”
Most of us here already know that. 😉
However, just because the GFS has that, doesn’t mean it’s going to be right. It doesn’t have nearly much support from its model “rivals” from Europe & Canada, at least through 240 hours.
Yes, TK, there is indeed a day for everything.
Some countries have lots of national holidays, as in 28 a year (eg, Cambodia). I remember talking to someone entering the foreign service who hoped he would be stationed there. Basically, the embassy is closed for about 40 days a year, not including weekends, as it has both the Cambodian and U.S. holidays off. So, he would get that in addition to 4 or 5 weeks of regular vacation.
Large brushfire in the eastern sections of the Blue Hills, over toward the Quincy/Milton area. Could see the smoke from I-93 over by Mass Ave.
Car thermometer read 63 when I was over in Cambridge, 60 when I got by the Museum of Science, 60 when I came out of the tunnel in Southie, and jumped to 70 when I got over by the Gas Tank, then was 70-73 the rest of my ride to Brockton.
Joshua: It’s been 11 years now since the Bruins last won the Cup. In the postseason they either get knocked out in the first round or lose in the Finals so I have no expectations from them other than yet another season of disappointment.
Need to work on that memory a bit – they haven’t lost a 1st round series since 2017.
2012 Lost in 1st round
2013 Lost in Stanly Cup Final
2014 Lost in 2nd Round
2015 Missed Playoffs
2016 Missed Playoffs
2017 Lost in 1st Round
2018 Lost in 2nd Round
2019 Lost in Stanley Cup Final
2020 Lost in 2nd Round
2021 Lost in 2nd Round
Only the Lightning have won more playoff games since 2011 than the Bruins. If that’s disappointing, then your standards are WAY too high.
They got to the Finals twice, they should have won at least one of them, especially in 2019.
Yes, I guess those are MY standards. 😉
Testing sent a comment earlier, but it doesn’t look like it got posted for some reason.
Hi Scott. I see you….always nice to.
Thanks Vicki you too!
New weather post…
