Sunday May 8 2022 Forecast (8:39AM)

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 8-12)

We remain in the high pressure north / low pressure south block at this time. In typical fashion of both springtime and this pattern, your best weather on Saturday was away from the coast, as the South Coast had periods of rain, and both coasts had persistent wind that was rather gusty, especially east-facing shores. Although it was breezy inland as well, the filtered sunshine helped it be a more pleasant day in a relative sense. Today, as that battle between high pressure and low pressure continues, the high to the north continues to gain and the South Coast rain sits mainly offshore, but we still have to deal with a cloud shield allowing some limited sun, and a gusty breeze. Travels to Mother’s Day brunches and visits will likely require a jacket. Happy Mother’s Day! High pressure pushes even further south Monday which should be a nicer day with more sun and a bit less wind, although we will still have a cool maritime breeze blowing. This general set-up will hold into the middle of next week, with the easterly flow gradually relaxing as the high center from the north gets closer. A stretching of the low pressure to the south may toss some additional clouds back into our sky toward midweek, but it should remain dry. When we get to Thursday, high pressure should be right over us with a sun-warmed air mass allowing a warm-up here, but a weak wind field allowing for sea breezes, keeping the coast cooler.

TODAY: Cloud/sun mix. Highs 50-57, coolest coast. Wind NE 10-20 MPH, higher gusts.

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 42-49. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 55-62, coolest coast. Wind NE 5-15 MPH, higher gusts.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 42-49. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 56-63, coolest coast. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 46-53. Wind E to SE 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 57-64, coolest coast. Wind SE 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 46-53. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 60-67 coastal plain, 68-75 interior. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.

DAYS 6-10 (MAY 13-17)

On the large scale, we continue to see some blocking during the middle of May. For us here, we should see surface high pressure sink to the south with a more significant warm-up for a couple days, but we need to watch for coastal sea breezes and even a back-door front threat as early as May 14. The air flow may turn more southerly and introduce more cloudiness and even a shower threat at some point mid to late period, but this is a lower confidence forecast at this point.

DAYS 11-15 (MAY 18-22)

Weaker blocking transitioning to zonal (west to east) flow continues to be the idea with variable temperatures averaging near normal and a mostly dry pattern other than minor systems bringing brief shower threats.

  1. Thanks TK. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms on WHW. I hope you all have a great day!

  2. The gails from yesterday have calmed to breezes today. The four younger kids played outside for most of the four hours my family was here for the Derby. They sure had red cheeks when they came in

Joshua, I hope today finds you feeling better

    1. That will teach me to say anything about wind here. Gusting into the mid to upper 20s. I think this neighborhood is in a wind tunnel.

  3. Thanks for the DC forecast TK. We return Saturday which may be a little warmer down there. Happy Mother’s Day to all on WHW!

  4. Good morning and thank you TK,

And a Happy Mother’s Day to all of the WHW moms out there!

  5. Thanks, TK.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms, and many thanks for all the good wishes here! I feel very blessed today.

    1. Beautiful. My nana was not a grandparent on paper but was the closest person I had to a grandparent. I loved her dearly and miss her every single day!

  6. Mother’s Day is usually a very good day for Boston sports teams. Knowing we couldn’t count on the Red Sox this time, I figured the Bruins would cover their asses for us. They did NOT disappoint. 🙂

The other day after the game SAK said “We have a series!” to which a friend replied “A series or a stay of execution?” to which SAK replied “If they play like they did tonight (Friday), we have a series.” They played just as well, other than a few lapses here and there. Finding out one of their other key players would be out at the last minute, and are missing another top guy, and getting behind twice (1-0 and 2-1), they didn’t panic. They fought back, took the lead, kept the lead, extended the lead, and sealed it up with an empty net goal. 5-2 Bruins. 2-2 series. I’m not sure whether or not the Bruins will pull this series out. They are certainly not “favored” being a wildcard against the #1 seed, but it’s now a best of 3 and anything can happen. 🙂 This is why they actually PLAY the games, folks…

The Sox on the other hand? Hello, offense? The season started almost a month ago in case you missed the memo…………..

    1. For years if the Sox started badly, they ended well. Conversely, when they started well, they got cocky and did not end well. For the Sox of old, that held true. Sadly, the Sox of old seem a distant memory…although it has not been that long. We shall see

      1. Indeed. I was saying to one of my brothers today that we used to feel OK if the Sox started roughly like this, because they’d clean it up. I’m a little nervous… we’ll see how it goes.

        1. Bruins have a lot of fight in them. Admirable.

Alas, I’ve given up on the Sox. Love the team. Will always support them, even if they go 62 and 100 this year (my prediction at this point in time). But, it’s clear they don’t have it. Too little talent, especially on offense and in the bullpen, and too many excruciating losses (eg, 0 and 6 in extra inning games; how is that possible? – 9 blown saves in 14 opportunities; how is that possible?). I think some call-ups and DFAs are in order – Dalbec, Brazier, Barnes (probably can’t due to contract; blame Bloom for that), Story (probably can’t due to contract; blame Bloom for that). I also think the hitting coach – Fatse – should be re-evaluated. Most of the At-Bats – besides Devers, Martinez, and Bogaerts – are unprofessional. Manny Ramirez wants to be a hitting coach. The science of hitting is in his DNA. Don’t think the Sox would ever do this, but …

          1. I had a bad feeling about the Red Sox before the season started when their schedule had them open the season against the Yankees ON THE ROAD. That’s like having a black cat cross your path to start your day. Nothing good can come of it.

At least we won’t have a season ending heartbreak this year. Moving on to the Patriots!

  7. My youngest reminded me that they put their pool up on May 14 last year. We may see some warm days next week, but it isn’t pool time yet….even for my two grandkids who wear bathing suits in the snow 😉

  8. The Bruins Stanley Cup in 1970 was won on Mother’s Day! 😀

Back in the day when our springs were WARM! 😉

Yes, I will complain about the “heat” this upcoming weekend. 🙂

  9. A reminder, Philip, that in 1970 the early part of spring was quite cold. There was even an Easter Sunday snowstorm: https://www.wpri.com/weather/weather-blog/the-easter-blizzard-in-rhode-island-51-years-later/

In 1970, the Boston marathon runners endured 38F with sleet and rain.

In 1970, May 10th (mother’s day and also the day Orr scored the Cup-winning goal) was hot – 90F.

In 1977, May 8th (mother’s day), there was a very late season snowstorm.

Goes to show anything can happen in spring in these parts, and this has been the case for a very long time.

    1. I remember the 1970 Easter snow. My parents, brother and I had Easter dinner at a fresh Pond restaurant …Fantasia’s…no longer there. We came out and were shocked at the snow accumulation. I’d just purchased my Mach I but was literally leaning to drive a stick. I was at a red light on a TINY hill in Belmont center and stalled through several lights before I could move forward. I still get chills.

    1. Hahaha. I did. It was a 69 390 Mach I. Not many were made. I drove it and I raced it. I got my 100 MPH patch at Epping NH.

After that I had a GTO and Formula Firebird. Neither could stand up to the Mach I. I will always miss that car
