Monkeypox is spreading. Something has happened to make the virus more transmissible than it was. Like ALL other viruses, monkeypox mutates. It is NOT as transmissible as coronaviruses or influenza. Nevertheless, it bears watching. This is not a good development. https://twitter.com/Faytuks/status/1527038807509458944
There’s already talk in public health circles of preparing to inoculate people with a live attenuated smallpox vaccine. I must say, I think that’s premature.
Covid wave is accelerating. I can’t believe this. 900 hospitalizations added nationwide yesterday. Keep in mind, the definitions have narrowed. This probably would have been twice the number under previous definitions. This absolutely sucks. https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1527280569469390850
I heard on the news this morning that in spite of increasing hospitalizations, most cities are reluctant to restore any mask mandates.
Thanks TK.
Philip, I don’t think any new policies will be put in place.
At least the CDC is now highly recommending indoor masking. Of course the horse is out of the barn now…
I was not worried about any relation. But I think the poster has a good point. It isn’t as much a case of covid causing other diseases. But because Covid attacks and compromises the immune system, it leaves a person with a weakened immune defense when it comes to those other illnesses. It is possible a disease such as monkey pox which was not highly transmissible is now is.
I’d seem it may have mutated. Or maybe you said that. Sorry if you did. I can’t keep up any more…in part because I am trying to ignore….unsuccessfully as you can see 🙁
14,878 students and 4,090 staff positives in the past five in school days.
Vicki, I’m also trying to avert my eyes to the monkeypox thing. But, the rapid global spread is a concern. I know it’s not nearly as transmissible as Covid. Still, with an incubation period of weeks, asymptomatic folks can spread this disease and we could be in another pandemic before long, albeit on a much smaller scale.
I sure understand. It is Impossible to ignore but there are far too many negatives surrounding us and I just don’t do negatives.

I have also noticed fewer masking on the T.
Sadly, this seems to make sense

I’m not as worried. Maybe I should be, but I don’t see all these things as necessarily interrelated.
On Monkeypox, Ed Yong’s latest piece is excellent: https://twitter.com/edyong209/status/1527356834260013058

One of the funniest tweets I’ve seen in a long time; and it’s from a person with 0 followers (https://twitter.com/Ldms08322099/status/1527297073124519937):
“Today on SquawkBox: Scott Gottlieb joins crew to tell us why we won’t see another monkeypox wave in Q4 2022.”
Hahahaha. Apparently his penchant for stating the pandemic is over has been noticed by others.
The Netherlands’ top virologist chimes in (I agree with her that this is most unusual to see so many cases popping up at the same time): https://twitter.com/MarionKoopmans/status/1527155018402516992

As goes the schools, goes the states as well.
