Thursday June 23 2022 Forecast (7:44AM)

DAYS 1-5 (JUNE 23-27)

Even unsettled weather isn’t that unsettled in the pattern we are in. If you are familiar with our weather here, and most of you reading this are very familiar with it, if you hear talk of omega blocks and low pressure nearby, and a warm front trying to move in but not quite making it, it likely makes you think of stretches of cloudy, wet weather. But we are experiencing that pattern right now, and other than “on the edge” kind of unsettled weather, the pattern fails to deliver. Ironically we need it too as you know, since we are in a building drought situation. But even what looked kind of promising a couple days ago – low pressure bringing us some rainfall during today – is not going to pan out. Yeah the low is out there, and the warm front is still trying to move in, but failed so badly that it actually moved further away (technically a cold front pushing further inland over the interior Northeast). So now we stand only the risk of a few isolated showers popping up today and have to look to Monday as our next chance of rainfall, and that will be dependent on how much moisture can be wrung out of the atmosphere by a cold front moving into the region. Before we get there, we do finally see a transition from today’s now dry forecast and continued cool air to the feel of summer for the first weekend of summer and the last weekend of June. This will take place as the aforementioned blocking pattern breaks down and allows things to move more from west to east once again, eventually putting an area of high pressure south and southeast of New England, allowing us to warm up. But even in that warm-up, with still chilly ocean water we will see the coastal areas cooler than inland locations. But it does indeed look like a great weekend for outdoor activities, so that’s a plus!

TODAY: Sun/cloud mix. A few isolated showers possible. Highs 67-74, coolest coast. Wind E 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Lows 54-61. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 75-82, coolest coast. Wind SE up to 10 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 60-67. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Highs 81-88 except 73-80 coast. Dew point 60+. Wind S up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.

SATURDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 62-69. Dew point 60+. Wind SW up to 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Partly sunny. Highs 83-90 except cooler coast. Dew point 60+. Wind S up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Patchy fog. Lows 62-69. Dew point 60+. Wind S up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon. Highs 76-83. Dew point 60+. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 28 – JULY 2)

High pressure is expected to dominate with mostly fair weather for much of this period, starting cooler than turning warmer again. There may be a weak disturbance or frontal system around at some point late in the period to bring a brief shower and thunderstorm chance.

DAYS 11-15 (JULY 3-7)

Seasonably warm weather with high pressure in control most of the time. One or two shower or thunderstorm chances may occur but pattern looks mainly dry.

        1. I hope your able to attend your relatives in Pembroke. It looks comfortable with low 80’s and dew points between 60-63.

          1. I’ll be anything it is warmer than that, but thank you so much. We’re planning on going, but have an option to skip it if we feel it is too HHH. Also we just got our 2nd booster last Friday, so the Mrs. is still feeling the effects of that. We shall see. 🙂

    1. Last 4th sucked so I hope it’s decent . I pulled a lot of strings to get it off this year

    1. Looks the same Vicki. Thank you!!! I’ve been starting to look at the ponds and lakes around here and they appear fairly normal.

      1. I just came back from fishing at the Charles River in Dedham.
I can say for a fact that the water is quite low. Where the water flows from the river through to the back ditch is barely a trickle. That is low. 🙂

  1. Rain shower in Back Bay. Not beneficial rain, but enough to make the streets and ground wet.

  2. Thanks, TK!

    Congrats, Tom!!!! Woo-Hoo!!!

I am right behind you, amigo!
Tomorrow is 180 for us. Half-day for the kids and we’re out not too long after that!

Certainly a school year for the books!

Enjoy happy summer days, Tom! 🙂

    1. 1.69″ of rain here in Taunton and a high of only 60º.

(I don’t remember either. I looked it up!)

  3. I think the cyanobacteria is back in the Esplanade Lagoon. The water is green, and there’s a distinct smell reminiscent of the summer of 2020 when there was a lot of cyanobacteria around. It killed a lot of ducks, but also fish.

  4. From the WHW vault:

    Happy Independence Day!

You need no reminder that it hasn’t felt like early July around here for a couple days now, and today won’t either, but we’ll also start to see improvement in the weather as a slow transition back toward weather more fitting for the season takes place. Upper level low pressure is moving very slowly away, but still has enough influence on the region for a lot of clouds, eventual limited sun, and still some shower opportunities today. Drying accelerates a little tonight making pretty much all scheduled fireworks displays possible.

    1. Haha that’s great! Don’t think we’ll be dealing with that this time – but … who knows this far out?

  5. Made a brief fishing trip this afternoon. Only fished for an hour perhaps 1 1/2 hours at best. Left the house at 2 and was back at 4. Played the role of the urban fisherman, sort of. Fished in Dedham, perhaps less than 1/2 mile from the Boston Line.
The good ole Charles River, my favorite fishing grounds.
Had not live bait, so Went with a 6 inch Berkely Power Bait imitation night crawler, which is some sort of soft rubber/plastic.

Managed 1 large blue gill and a 15 inch largemouth bass.
A trohpy, not, but on light spinning gear it put up a masterful fight and was fun to catch and release. Also had 2 powerful strikes from the same decent sized pickerel, but it evaded the hook. All in all, not too bad. Had about 10 raindrops hit me and that was that.

So I was WRONG about it not raining today! 🙂 🙂

    1. So was I initially. I first left the showers out until I saw the cu fields building on satellite and edited the outlook.

Sometimes day 1 is not as easy as you think it’s gonna be. 😉

      1. On the forecasts I wrote last night, I left in “slight chance for a shower” for all of eastern New England.

  6. As I alluded to yesterday…

    Tropical Weather Outlook
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
    200 PM EDT Thu Jun 23 2022

For the North Atlantic…Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

    Tropical Atlantic:
A tropical wave located over the eastern tropical Atlantic is
producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions could become conducive for gradual development of this system by early next week as the disturbance moves westward at around 15 mph over the tropical Atlantic.

    * Formation chance through 48 hours…low…near 0 percent.
    * Formation chance through 5 days…low…20 percent.

  7. Naming heat waves Part 2.

I haven’t done much homework on this since my last post but did learn a few things. One group leading the charge is called the Extreme Heat Resilience Alliance (EHRA), somehow connected to the Rockefeller Foundation. NOAA has been lukewarm to the idea so far. I do remember reading something about this more than a year ago but thought that it was just someone floating an idea around. Now I think it has some legs. Pros and Cons have been put forth.

About 6 US cities are experimenting with this idea … Los Angeles, Miami, and Milwaukee are among them. CA seems like it could be the 1st to adopt this statewide. Spain and Greece are moving in that same direction.

More later. Truthfully I do not understand this very well. Still need to learn more.

  8. Thrilled to see that Stevie Nicks is touring again. She was in Indiana this week. In her 70s and still very much at ease with the audience and herself. I think this very brief clip is from “Edge of Seventeen” (1981), which is a track from Nicks’ first solo album. https://twitter.com/Nickslive/status/1539745151979081730

Here’s an amazing live version Edge of Seventeen from 1981. What a performer and talented person. Have always liked her lyrics, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmPgMc3R8zg
