Monkeypox has been found at 3 separate wastewater stations in the Bay Area. It’s a growing problem. The good news is the case fatality rate appears to be quite low; less than 1%.
Too many social issues taking both viruses off the media grid for awhile. Thanks for the updates Joshua.
Hard not to. The country is in a free fall.
Thanks, Joshua.
The nation isn’t in a good place. Frankly, the Covid-19 pandemic revealed how polarized we are and, in fact, deepened that polarization. Unfortunately, what has happened with Covid-19 and really any public health issue, including abortion, is that the debate has been co-opted by extremes on both sides. The healthy middle no longer has a voice. Yet, American public opinion is generally in the middle on these public health issues. Politicians, however, no longer listen to their constituents. That’s really worrisome.
The majority of Americans are not anti-vax, yet you wouldn’t know this from the media reports and the politicians who rant and rave about vaccines of all kinds. During the first 18 months of the pandemic, the majority of Americans weren’t opposed to public health measures such as mask-wearing. Yet, you wouldn’t know from the media reports and the politicians who rant and rave about masks. There’s often been an either/or mentality dominating all Covid-19 discussions. You’re either a Covidiot or a Covidian. Nothing in between. In reality, most Americans are in between.
I believe a similar story can be told about abortion. The majority of Americans – ~70% – favor a woman’s right to choose with gestational limits, which can vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Instead, the debate has been hijacked by fundamentalists who do not represent the majority and say ban all abortions, and radicals on the other side who say the government may not impose ANY limits on choice. Both extremes do not represent America. However, that’s where our `debate’ is and it’s very sad and disturbing.
Whew. I sure agree with you. Well written but this summed it up
The healthy middle no longer has a voice.
The tail continues to wag the dog.
I seldom write here, but you have perfectly summarized this.
I only hope those things you highlighted about the extremists given attention while the rest are not, politicians not listening to each other, and the division in general, find a way to come to an end. Fingers crossed that it starts with some common sense people who gain the ability to be heard and understood – and a peaceful shift back to a better place can result. We owe it to those we hand the world off to.
