  1. Thanks TK for the update.

I read Barry’s Sunday evening blog mentioning his 34 years at WBZ as well as Don Kent’s and Bruce Schwoegler’s tenure at WBZ (28 and 33 years respectively). When Barry does eventually retire, it is going to be one very sad day for WBZ and local tv news in general. I will say the same for Harvey at WCVB as well.

    Barry = 34 years…and counting. (1978-until further notice) πŸ™‚
    Don Kent = 28 years (1955-1983)
    Bruce Schwoegler = 33 years (1968-2001)

I met Bruce almost 20 years ago at a lecture in Boston. IIRC he spoke on the Blizzard of 78 and the 1969 100 hour storm. Afterwards he gave me an autographed picture of him…still have it. πŸ™‚

    1. Bruce was great. When Barry retires even non weather lovers will feel a loss I believe. Harvey too. I met bruce waiting for an X-ray at newton wellesley. He and I talked for a bit but nothing to do with weather. Nice nice man

      1. Yes, he was very nice to me as well after the lecture. Some local celebs can be nasty and aloof to the public on their own time. Usually I never even approach a local personality if I see them in public, just so I never have to think ill of them in the future but I took a chance and asked for an autograph just as Bruce was packing up and leaving. πŸ™‚

  2. TK and others…do you know what Bruce Schwoegler is up to these days? Is he retired from whatever he did after leaving WBZ?…or did he retire from WBZ?

IIRC Melissa Bell took Bruce’s place in 2001. It ended badly for her later at Ch. 25…drunken driving arrest. πŸ™

    1. Bruce has is own company, not weather-related. But I don’t remember what he does. I’ll have to ask around.

    1. I agree with my kids. It won’t teach him a thing Im sorry it took my daughter and SIL to make me see it He needs help. not more of what he seems to think is the answer

      1. Hey coastal…has the principal decided on a punishment?

I am not totally convinced this kid has abusive parents. He could just as easily be abusing his own mother who is likely a single parent.

        1. Philip. Didn’t mean to say abusive parents for sure. Somthing in his life has given him idea this is first resort i do believe he should be helped and not just suspended and no more.

          1. Hmmm….another possibility is the father is abusive towards his mother. My bet is either way the mother is more likely a victim to an extent. Of course, there are a gazillion other reasons. Family intervention from social services is needed for sure.

            1. Philip – there is also a good chance there is no violence in this man’s life but it seems to me he has problems and they need dealing with. I do hope it is not a suspension and dropped.

  3. Thanks TK. Sooo the winner the last two days on jeopardy is from JP. Im hoping it’s old salty

    1. Vicki, I doubt it was Old Salty. I believe those shows are taped a few weeks in advance and it has only been just last week (28th?) since his last posting.

  4. Charlie things are already starting to sprout. Next time your out take a good look you will see the tip of the bulb sprouted from the ground 1inch to 2inches

      1. Good grief I need garden help. TK you have any plans of starting the garden blog before spring. John I try every year to grow a cutting garden. 10 years later and nothing. Do you do house calls???

        1. Vicki, I have wanted to start a gardening blog for a few years now, but if there is some way we could intergrate one into this blog or any other suggestions… that woudl great! I’d like to hear TK’s take on the idea.

        2. I should be able to create a ‘channel’ in here you can use for talking about that stuff more specifically.

  5. Old salty is probably sick. Two nasty bugs going around. He will post. Tk can also email him as he has all of our email addresses.

    1. I was thinking that too. Doesn’t stop me from worrying. First thing I check every morning is if he’s posted here.

  6. Hey Coastal, I just read about your wife’s situation. I’m very sorry that had to happen to her. Whatever the punishment, I hope it’s swift and that your wife does not feel threatened any further by this student!

  7. He was detained in the office until one of his parents came to get him. My wife saw him in there when she left for the day. Which really shook her up emotionally. He has two parents and my wife has met his mother and communicated with her via email in the past about the boys performance at school. His grade is current at a 20 (F-). Of course I did some digging online and noticed his mother likes to drink and his father is a blue collared worker. They live in a low income area of town that produces a lot of characters at school. His mother actually emailed my wife last night and apologized for his actions. Probably trying to get her not to press charges. My wife did not respond and simply forwarded the email to her superiors.

Legally right now, the school can only do so much. Ten days was the first thing they do so they can prepare to move forward. But because these things take time, and have legal issues attached to them, no one can guarantee that he will not be in her class room when his suspension is over. I think she should press charges, as well as look into the possibility of getting a restraining order. Maybe the order is whats needed to ensure this kid does not come back to her class. As for pressing charges, in the long run will not negatively impact the boy in anyway. It will show him that there are consequences for his action that he must deal with. Something he obviously does not learn at home . He will not do time in jail and will probably have to do community service. But it will also make the parents miss work to go to court. Hopefully on multiple occasions. This will be a huge inconvenience for them and will probably negatively impact their wallet. Maybe this might give the parents an opportunity to see that they are failing as parents and make some corrections. This will also put this family in the system for monitoring.

Another important point for pressing chargers is what you are showing the other 20+ kids in class that witnessed this. If he is only suspended for two weeks then the other kids will think “Hey, grab a teacher and get a two week vacation!”. This is not the message you would want to send to your kids.

Its obvious that this kids does not know right from wrong. This issue starts with his family life. Teachers should teach and parents should raise their children. They are not baby sitters they are educators. It’s time to hold parents and families accountable for their in-actions.

“Never talk back to a teacher or adult.”
    “Do not hit women.”

If I messed up my Dad would put the fear of god into me. It worked!

    1. I do hope somewhere along the line someone gets the kid help. If his parents are not, I’m a firm believer someone should. I believe in the saying that it takes a village. And it takes understanding and firmness. Coastal were there police reports on the mother’s drinking or just neighbors/friends? If police, I’d be surprised if DSS isn’t already involved.

    2. Sounds like your wife or the school has decided to press charges. Also sounds like this kid is a problem in school. Again should have been taking out in cuffs.

        1. was she very nervous going to school today? I was thinking that if there are bruises that she might want to make sure she has pictures but you’ve probably already thought of that.

          1. No school today because of the primary. She has redness with no bruising. The police and nurse looked her over.

            1. Sorry I am late in this dicussion but catching up on the replies…do you mind me asking what happened? I can’t seem to find the original post, but I am gathering something bad happened at school?

              1. Hi WW and good morning πŸ™‚

Coastal posted what happened last night at 7:47 on the Week Ahead (yesterday’s) thread. Hope this helps πŸ™‚

                1. Thanks Vicki, and Good Morning to you as well. I just read it…wow that was uncalled for. When I was in school at that age, of course there were trouble makers but no one ever laid a hand on a teacher…it was like an unspoken rule everyone knew and followed. Keep us in the loop about what comes of it!

  8. Its amazing what is happening in school. I never saw a student go up and hurt a teacher. Mouthed off a teacher yes but never hurt them. You wonder the kids that do that stuff what kind of home life they have. Another thing when it comes to student fighting you worry if one of them has a weapon on them. The biggest thing when I fight broke out when I went to school was someone getting a black eye.

  9. Times have changed with weapons, you have to be so careful these days. Coastal sorry about the situation.

  10. Speaking of weapons you wonder one day with what has happened with these school shooting the biggest being Columbine that if were going to see metal detector’s put in schools.

  11. There was a plan to shoot up a school in atleboro. Two kids that were tossed out of school, plan just like columbine. They were to go to court today. Two problems with kids today. Drugs and broken homes. Some times my house can be crazy, but it is a home not a house. Big difference. A house is just a place where you go. A home is a house thats filled with love and happyness. I go home everyday.

  12. Just read the story about the two former students talking about a Columbine-like attack at Attleboro High School on Facebook. Unbelievable. I went to North Attleboro High, but still, way too close for comfort. I’m glad they are behind bars now and hope they will be for a long time.

  13. I think the reason you have problems with some homes is the parents have to work mulitple jobs just to be able to keep with what they have and there not around enough to see what their kids are up to. I remember hearing stories when my parents were in school the family sat down to have a nice supper and talk. You don’t see as much of that today.

    1. JJ I agree that it is in large part due to both parents having to work. And I will stay away from my belief as to why – other than both wanting to which is fine

  14. Coastal…definitely your wife should press charges and get that restraining order. As I mentioned in TK’s previous post, time inside a courtroom should scare both the kid and parents if nothing else. “Maybe” a judge might be able to save this kid from a life of crime. Otherwise we will be hearing from him on the evening newscasts, and not in a positive way.

Good luck to you and your wife…keep us posted! πŸ™‚

  15. Coastal – just turned on computer since late yesterday. Sorry about what happened to your wife – hope she is doing ok. That must have been very scary and also disheartening. Teachers are there to teach and help kids and when kids disrespect their teachers – that is really sad. I’m not sure who or what is to blame with today’s society. I think we need more of a family-centered life. I know it’s hard when parents have to work – but they should try to get some quality time together. Never having kids, I really can’t voice much of an opinion. But I can say that behavior that Coastal’s wife got is totally unacceptable. Again, my thoughts go out to her and also to you Coastal – it’s not easy for you either.

    1. Teaching has changed and it’s a shame. There are so many wonderful people who want to teach because they care deeply. My SIL had planned to be a teacher but there was too much about it that didn’t make sense to him. I have a neighbor who is a wonderful person who took early retirement because he couldnt deal with the politics any more I have a tremendous respect for teachers. I would be incredibly upset if I were coatals wife heading back into the school – a place that is supposed to be safe. Coastal I sure don’t blame you for being angry and frustrated. I think anything you do that first protects your wife and second gets the kid help is the right thing and it sounds as if that’s what you are doing.

  16. Thank you all. I’m fine just a extremely angry that someone laid there hands on my wife in that fashion. She’ll be find, its a learning experience for us all. I think I’ll get her into some self defense classes in case something like this happens again. She’s just a peanut πŸ™‚

I think there are many factors that are wrong now a days. Home Life, uninspiring roll models, drugs I’m sure are some of the reasons. Another one could be the way we baby our youth compared to the past generations. No one losses, everyone wins, try hard and you will achieve everything that you want. They neglect to stress the fact that life is unfair.

I look forward to raising my children with good old fashion values that still relate in today’s world. I would like them both to be strong, independent, thoughtful, caring and creative. No hand outs, you get what you earn, and for Pete’s Sake don’t hit your teacher!

I’ll let you know what if anything happens going forward. I do look forward to the opportunity of meeting them in court. Maybe I should get a wet-n-stick skull tattoo with flames and place it on my neck while wearing a bow tie. That should send there head for a spin. πŸ™‚

    1. I agree with the home life and loss of the family unit. There doesnt seem to be a family and there sure as heck is no respect I dont agree as much with the winning and losing. To me too many parents put emphasis on having to win which should IMHO never be the focus. We taught our kids that doing their best should be the focus. If you win then fine. If not you still know you did your best.

It does seem to boil down to total lack of respect for anyone or anything.

      1. Forgot to say my oldest is 5’2″ almost and has never weighed more than 95 lbs and can toss two bales of hay at the same time with ease and control a 1200 lb horse with just her legs. Never underestimate those peanuts:). Good idea about the defense training

          1. Coastal I was just wondering. Is the school meeting with your wife to help her deal with this and to work with how to move forward?

    1. Yes, it is. And so was yesterday. Hard to believe it’s going to warm up tomorrow and Thurs. We still have lots of snow in our yard – but I don’t mind. Just enjoying the little winter we have gotten so far – will make spring that more enjoyable.

        1. I know. That’s how I feel too. And the thing is, usually at this time of year, I am so tired of the snow and really looking forward to spring. I don’t think I can remember a winter like this where I want to hold on to it just a little longer.

  17. I don’t think tomorrow is as warm as advertised. And I don’t think Boston makes it to the record on Thursday.

Hope everything works out for the best, coastal!!
