I strongly recommend folks over 50 get an additional booster this fall. We can’t predict the future. But, it seems that every time we think we’re in the clear another sub-variant crops up. BA.5 is the latest, as we know. It’s having a significant impact across the U.S., with numbers hospitalized and in ICU reaching levels not seen since March. Deaths remain relatively low. But, at an average now of 480 per day, that’s no consolation. There will likely be other (sub)variants, especially given the numbers of cases worldwide.
Monkeypox has killed people in Africa for many years. But, as the outbreak has spread now it’s officially been the cause of death of one person in Spain, and one person in Brazil. These numbers will rise in the coming weeks. After all, 10% of monkeypox cases are hospitalized. Often this is for severe pain management. But, sometimes it’s also for respiratory failure. As is always the case, the immunecompromised are most at risk. In Brazil, the first known death is an immunecompromised 41 year old man. More and more children are contracting the virus. And more and more women. Spain recorded a big jump in monkeypox female cases this week. 64 females now have the virus, up from 27 reported last week. Monkeypox is NOT a gay man’s disease, or necessarily sexually transmitted. In fact, many cases are NOT sexually transmitted. Our CDC is not on the ball. No surprise there. Some of our cities and states are tracking the disease and declaring public health emergencies.
My 4th is august 8. I was waiting for a covid specific but based on fausts recommendation I’ll get 4 now and 5 when the covid specific comes out
Joshua, my PCP wants me to wait until the fall when the “Omicron” specific vaccine comes out, but what if that vaccine still hasn’t been developed by the fall? Should I get the current vaccine at that time?
I have had all 4 shots to date, btw.
Yes, get whatever is available at the time.
You can always get 5 in fall if omicron specific is not out. I tend to listen to my pcp
My question is is it originated from gay and lesbians and then others come in close contact with them indoors? Example: indoor party, or simply just rubbing up against them? Thanks
