Record Or Not, A Warm Day Coming

10:36PM

Many people will like what they experienced today better than they will like tomorrow, because of tomorrow’s wind. I’m having my doubts about Boston reaching 65 let alone challenging the record of 67. An airmass becoming more moist at lower levels, which is harder to warm, and an earlier increase of clouds, will probably put the brakes on a temperature rise during the early to mid afternoon.

A cold front will cross southern New England Thursday night with rain showers. This will introduce cooler and drier air for Friday, though a secondary front may produce a few rain and snow showers in isolated locations late Friday, and slightly colder air will follow this for Saturday, before a new warm-up gets underway on Sunday.

The next frontal system is due on Monday with a chance of rain showers at that time. I’m not sure of the timing of this front this far out, so temperature forecasts for Monday are with low confidence.

Eastern MA, RI, and southern NH forecast…

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy. Low 45-50. Wind SW around 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers late in the afternoon. High 61-66. Wind SW 10-20 MPH increasing to 15-30 MPH with gusts 35-40 MPH.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Rain showers ending by midnight. Low 35-40. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny to partly cloudy. An isolated rain or snow shower possible late day. High 45-50. Wind W 10-20 MPH.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 26. High 40.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 28. High 52.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Low 39. High 50.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 33. High 47.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy. Chance of rain showers. Low 39. High 50.

  1. The record high of 67 set in 1995 was at the tail end of the 5th least snowiest winter for Boston at 14.9″. What a coincidence. 😉

    1. 9.0″ = 1936-37
    2. 9.2″ = 2011-12
    3. 10.3″ = 1972-73
    4. 12.7″ = 1979-80
    5. 14.9″ = 1994-95

Thanks TK for the update! 🙂

    1. Later that year, summer 1995, Chicago had a 5 or 6 day heat wave that killed several hundred people. At its peak, one day had a high of 106F, while the nighttime lows were in the mid 80s. In reading up on it a bit, one of the contributing factors was very dry conditions, allowing for every bit of the suns energy to go to heating. I might contend, that so far this year, most of the US has to be running at below normal precip.

  2. TK, thanks. Saturday definitely looking colder than I thought. Last Saturday was very windy. My Saturday boating ideas are not working out at all.

  3. Interestingly enough, this Sunday will probably end the cold streak. Perhaps Saturdays will be cold for awhile from now on. It will be interesting if “sea breezes” tend to develop mostly on Saturdays in the coming weeks.

  4. I got a real kick out of Barry’s evening blog. He is not ready to discount April just yet for snow. I really doubt it at this point, but I am glad that Barry isn’t going to retire anytime soon. 🙂

    1. Barry is a young man! The guy runs 10K’s like most people take strolls around the block… 😉

  5. TK, when will it STOP being windy!? I am not a fan of the wind. I want sun, sun, sun, and more sun! A little BREEZE is OKAY, but not WIND.

When will I not need my jacket anymore!?!?

    1. Well, here’s the thing. You probably would not need a jacket tomorrow, except for the wind, which will make it feel just cool enough that you need one, unless you’re really brave. But then you may have to deal with little things flying around in the wind gusts. 😉

If you are really looking for a non-windy day, won’t be too bad Friday and Saturday, but that’s when it will be getting colder. Keep the jacket handy, for now… 🙂

  6. From the Mt Washington web page, you can get a vertical temp profile at several different elevations of the auto road.

It’s nearly 34F at the summit.

At the bottom of the auto road, elevation 1,600 ft above sea level….it’s currently 59F !!

That is an amazing layer of warm air just above the surface.

  7. Thanks, TK!

Tom, thanks for the info. regarding different temps. on Mt. Washington. Interesting!

  8. Emergencyemail.org ALERT: NASA Warns Possible Infrastructure Disruptions from Solar Flarehttp://www.emergencyemail.org/newsemergency/anmviewer.asp?a=1833&z=29

  9. Did anyone have the opportunity to see anything unusual in the skies during the early morning hours due to solar flare? Unfortunately, my pillow blocked my view 🙂

    1. shotime – my husband stayed out longer than normal with the dog but didn’t see anything. I opened the blinds before sunrise and didn’t either. They said you could see the northern lights in Michigan (I believe)

I thought they were saying the largest effect would be in Europe but I am not sure. Thanks for posting the link

      1. I was outside around 4am but didn’t see anything. I am in a wooded area with a dark sky which is good, but unfortunately not at a higher elevation to see lower on the horizon which is where u usually need to look. The article said the leading edge of the energy just made it here last night so maybe still a chance the next couple of nights. Hopefully the cloud cover doesn’t get in the way!

  10. Wow 9am and it is nice in the city, leaving now emergency dentist visit, I could not get a night appt till monday. Oh well.

  11. I communicated with Old Salty this morning via email. He is doing fine. He has been extremely busy at work lately and does not have anytime after work to check in. Rest assured he is doing well and will check back in when he can.

That was not him on Jeopardy, he’s a lot better looking 🙂

Of course, that was not him on the BZ blog.

  12. Glad to hear Old Salty is doing good.
The Champion on Jeopardy doing real good with winning 4 games. He might already qualify for the tournament of champions. If he wins tonight he is definetely in as 5 time Champion. I don’t think he will beat Ken Jennings record of 74 games won and win over 2 million dollars.

    1. I’m not sure anyone will beat Jenning’s record – it was a blast to watch. We have watched the show every night as long as I can remember.

  13. More sun than I was thinking heading toward important temp-rise time. Will that make 67 more reachable? We will know soon. Sticking with 64 or 65 for Logan.

    1. It’s been strange watching the infrared satellite loop. The leading edge of the clouds entering easternmost NY state keep eroding away.

It is 63F at the base of Mt Washington, elevation 1,600 ft.

As you say, next few hrs temp wise should be interesting.

  14. 60 outside right now i wish i was able to go outside and its only 1030.
the wind will keep any sea breeze from forming.
I suggest people that live on the water to enjoy it and take a walk on the beach.
I know that i am going to take a walk in the marsh this afternoon. we made a board walk out through it.. there is really little water so we can not kayak yet. not to mention there is still areas of ice.

  15. Coastal – thank you so much with the information about Old Salty! I am so relieved he is ok and I am looking forward to his posts whenever he can post them.

Beautiful day, just windy. All the snow we had here is melting fast.

  16. 65 here in Hartford as well. Our record is 69 today and there is barely a cloud in the sky.

NWS point and click forecast for Boston now says high of 69 (70 for Somerville)…I think the records are going down at both locations today!

  17. I think that, unless something drastically changes…..such as an excessive precip event or the NAO completely tanks, that in this overall pattern and because of the warmth and dryness of the last several months, it is reasonable to assume the actual temp is going to be higher than what the models forecast. Both on days that feature cool downs and especially those that feature warm sectors.

    Logan at 67F at noontime.

    1. Speaking of which, today’s prediction for the NAO keeps it positive thru and beyond March 17th.

        1. After a brief cool down tomorrow and over the weekend, it appears we are looking at several more mild days in the 60’s next week. Euro long range is showing this mild to unseasonably warm pattern continuing right through April 1!

  18. 68F at 1pm at Logan. Even elevated Worcester is up to 64F. Today’s temp anomaly appears on track to be > +20F.

I wonder what the all-time monthly temp departure is at Logan for any month since records began being kept.

    1. Yesterday’s +11F departure brought Logan to just about even temp avg for the first 7 days of the month.

  19. Current temps from Wunderground:

    71 Chestnut Hill
    71 Medford
    72 Malden
    72 Waltham
81 Dorchester (get your thermometer out of the sun!)

  20. Regarding the solar storm from CNN:

The ongoing solar storm may not be as big as advertised, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday. The geomagnetic storm has reached only G1 intensity on scale from G1 (weak) up to G5 (extreme). On Wednesday, forecasters thought the level would reach the strong G3 category. Communications in the polar regions have been slightly affected, with some airlines flying different routes around the poles to avoid loosing communication.

  21. got to 74 now back down to 69
Now only if i did not have 3 tests to study for thats tomorrow. 2 of which i found out today. 🙁

  22. Just turned on ch 7……. Multi houses on fire in Humarock. The wind is howling down here. I’m not surprised what I’m seeing on TV.

        1. Pretty much straight ahead from the bridge, yes ? And then maybe four or five houses to the left.

          1. From what I can see first house is just beside the large original house at the corner of sea street and beach – awful

    1. Yes…….I’m looking out right now at trees swaying back and forth. Lucky no leaves on them yet, we’d probably be without power.

    1. John my guess is that the extra lot between the fourth house and the next had a lot to do with it too. If it were not there I’m willing to bet it would have continued right down the beach.

      1. but you are right – if it had been an east wind there may have been no stopping it either.

        1. The wind was was blowing towards the ocean. If that was east you would have been looking at a whole new landscape down there. As bad as loosing four homes is,that entire neighborhood could have been lost. So sadeh in today’s economy. We know someone who acctually has a home on the water around right where the fire.b

          1. looked to be blowing from south-ish in the pictures but they said it was whipping around – one of the pics on BZ sure shows why it spread. Very sad indeed.

  23. Blog is updated!

I’m heading to the Garden for the Bruins this evening. Look for me on TV! haha!
