Is anyone being advised to get the monkey pox vaccine. Or a polio booster
At-risk folks are being advised to get the monkeypox vaccine. Demand exceeds supply, hence the shortages.
I just read that if you’re up to date on your polio and other regular vaccinations – rubella, measles – you should be okay without an additional booster. I think it’s advisable to get a booster every 15 years or so. I may be wrong about the precise number of years.
There is ongoing community spread of polio in NY state in two counties. That’s not good, obviously.
Thank you Joshua. I don’t recall having a polio booster in many years. I did have a blood test for the others as there was always a question as to whether I had measles. I am covered for all of those.
I’ll email my pcp.
The good news on monkeypox is that deaths are very rare. Yes, there have been some – 13 by my latest count – worldwide. But, the number is still very low.
Hospitalizations, on the other hand, are rising steadily, along with cases.
Cases are gradually expanding beyond the at-risk groups, to include women and children. I’m concerned about what the school year could bring, as monkeypox impacts children worse than adults. That’s been the experience in Africa at least.
U.S, case growth is rather stunning (and there’s severe undertesting):
– May 18: 1
– May 26: 10
– June 16: 100
– July 13: 1,000
– July 29: 5,000
– August 10: 10,000
