Spring Fever Or Summer Fever?

REMINDER: Set clocks ahead 1 hour tonight (Daylight Savings Time begins at 2AM Sunday morning)!

6:22PM

At 5:45PM, the last sunset before 6PM occurred in Boston until October 16 2012. And tomorrow, of course, the sunset will be much later.

Tonight will be cold. Not excessively cold. Normal March kind of cold. But there is going to be very little normal about the temperature pattern coming up during the next 7 to 10 days, which may turn out to be one of the warmest stretches of March weather we have experienced. High pressure ridging will be in control, with only a couple weak disturbances passing by. Temperatures will be running above to much above normal starting Sunday through next week including into next weekend. Temperatures along the coast may be a little more tricky on a few of the days, depending on wind direction. If high pressure to our south is stronger than high pressure to our north, a more southwesterly wind will probably limit ocean winds and the coast will be warmer, of course with the exception of coastal areas that face south and southwest (South Coast, RI, Cape Cod). If high pressure to the north is stronger, we may see an onshore flow for a day or two, making east and north facing coastal areas much cooler. We will see how that plays out as the week goes on.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

TONIGHT: Variably cloudy. Low from the lower 20s inland valleys to lower 30s coast. Wind SE-S under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Mostly sunny. High 55-60. Wind S-SW 10-15 MPH.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Low 40-45. Wind SW 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny. High 66-71. Wind SW 10-20 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Low 50-55. Wind SW 10-15 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain showers in the morning. Partly cloudy in the afternoon. High 63-68. Wind SW 10-15 MPH shifting to W.

WEDNESDAY: Partly sunny. Low 48. High 62.

THURSDAY: Mostly cloudy. Low 46. High 59.

FRIDAY: Mostly sunny. Low 48. High 66.

SATURDAY: Partly cloudy. Low 51. High 71.

  1. It’s going to be very interesting to see how things start to “green up” over the next couple of weeks. Back in 2010 everything seemed about 2 weeks ahead of schedule with the wet and mild March and then the early jump into summer that April. IIRC trees started to green during the first week of April. Will it be even earlier this year?

A March 1st post in the Washington Post indicated an early bloom and peak for the Cherry Trees in DC. I wonder if that will be even earlier as that prediction was made 10 days ago.

    1. It will be nice to see…….why do I get the feeling everything is out well, well in advance (leaves, flowers, grass…you name it) and then the ultimate book end storm clobbers the region sometime in the last couple days of March, first week of April that leaves the region with lots of power outages yet again.

  2. I think it may kwm. You will be seeing things coming to life, don’t you love it. This could be one of the best springs we have seen in sometime.

    1. John I was thinking that too. We’ve all enjoyed some fun winters but spring has been noticeably absent for years – it’s about time it gets its turn!

    1. Hi John

Yes. I plan on doing that. Our property backs up against some wetlands so that area is the one to watch. I love an early and warm spring 🙂

  3. They have got to widen 95 from 295 to the interjection of 93/95 in canton, widen it to 4 lanes now instead of waiting till its more expensive, what do they think it’s gonna be like in 50yrs, they can’t leave it a mini highway of 3 lanes forever, good grief some cities have 8 lanes 1 way, so it’s a 16 lane highway both directions, we’re suppose to be smart here, they should come up with a plan instead of sitting back, and can we get highway street lighting on at least busy exits, have a good day everyone 🙂

      1. John I’m a new Englander to the core, I travel up to 25-30,000 miles per yr for the last 10yrs and I see how good other cities/people have it, I just get aggravated that we don’t have what they have but seem to have everything we got and more, I went to a beautiful modern restaurant in Atlanta about 12 miles from downtown in the close suburbs and it was nothing like I’ve ever seen in Boston or anywhere around here, like I’ve said before I just wish this area was more livley and had some sort of nightlife other than just downtown Boston that u would have to drive 35 min too, have a great day everyone

      2. Sometimes I feel like the people here would rather have more cvs’s or another car dealership built than bring jobs here and bring increased traffic to there town, what kind of thinking is that? It’s crazzzzy

  4. went skiing today . I went to stowe. It was pretty good conditions. It was really hard snows one area powder other areas ice other areas packed powder. It was the only time i have ever seen bare ground up in stowe vt the 6 year i have gone even in march. IT was hard skiing through the snow today but it was still fun.
tomorrow i will be taking a walk through the marshland to see whats out and start looking at what birds are here.

  5. 2nd March heat wave, maybe beginning today ? Ok, in summer, 3 days of 90 + are fair definition…….I was thinking of 3 days of 60 + ?????

The dark season has ended 🙂 :). I can take the very brief return to morning darkness.

  6. Today’s Accuweather Trivia Quiz.

The cloud that is created by a jet plane is called:

    A. Jet Stream
    B. Contrail
    C. Jet Streak
    D. Exhaust Plume

One that I finally knew the answer to.

    1. I thought it was contrail but since I also knew it right away I suspect I must be wrong…………see how much confidence I have in that answer 🙂

  7. We are heading to Humarock today – at least I hope since my husband was called into work early this morning to run a rush test. I want to pick up two of the meals to go at Corner Cafe and have lunch on the beach.

John, how are you feeling? I have some (a lot) of lawn questions and wonder if it’s ok with you if I ask – and also if TK minds. Thought it might be a good time since it’s quiet weatherwise

        1. As soon as he’s feeling up to it, go right ahead with your lawn/garden discussion. 🙂

    1. shotime – oddly enough I never really got all of my winter clothes out. And no one used boots – not even once. My daughters are not pleased since the kids all needed new boots and snow suits of course and what a waste of money.

  8. Hello from Bagan, Burma!! Hot and humid here, about 99 today with some haze. Looks like a great week of weather back home. Enjoy!

  9. I think we can be talking 60s through the week and possibly even reaching 70
today mostly sunny highs in the upper 50s and low 6os
tonight clear with lows in the upper 30s
monday mostly sunny warm highs in the high 60s
monday night increasing clouds and warm in the upper 40s
tuesday warm and humid chance of of showers highs in the upper 60s if enough sun comes out we could be talking low 70s
tuesday night chance of showers lows in the mid 40s
wednesday though friday night mostly to partly cloudy highs in the low 60s lows in the low 40s
saturday warm and sunny highs in the low 70s

  10. Logan managed to receive 0.1″ of snow early yesterday for its “final, final” total for the non-winter of 2011-12. 🙁

    1. 9.0″ = 1936-37
    2. 9.3″ = 2011-12 🙁
    3. 10.3″ = 1972-73

Too bad that developing ocean storm yesterday didn’t “back in” another 20-30 miles. Where is a norlun trough when you need one? 😉

  11. with this current pattern i wonder if my parents could open the pool in the first week of may. Or late april but that will be really pushing it.

  12. with this current pattern i wonder if my parents could open the pool in the first week of may. Or late april but that will be really pushing it.

  14. Hey TK,

I notice that your site is still on “Standard” Time regarding posts. I wish that we could stay on standard time all year round. 🙂

I hate DST and am going to miss early sunrises that I was just getting used to. Now I will have to wait another month before they return again. I also miss my one hour of sleep that I am not getting back until November…another 8 months. 🙁

Early sunrises and early sunsets would be fine by me. I hate dark mornings in the winter as it is.

OK…enough of my annual “DST” rant. 🙂

    1. Doing site admin now – time will be fixed.

I don’t mind DST, but I think we go there too early. I think it should be April thru September.

      1. Tk I like the picture here. How do you like our chances of acctually having a spring this year. Beyond ugh.

  15. Today’s 57 degrees feels warmer than last Thursday’s 67. Must have been that wind “chill.” Not a breath of wind here today. Beautiful day!

  16. How pathetic am I. I was watching videos on youtube of last years weather forecast, of the blizzards we had. Hopefully next year will be much better.

    1. Cat, I will be pathetic with u, I often found myself doing the same thing this “winter,” longing for the times last year when we were discussing who would get 18 inches and who would get 24. …sigh…

      1. The last nonwinter we had in 01-02 was followed by a snowy winter in 02-03 hopefully nxt winter will be similar.

      2. Awwww now I’m sad. I was listing the day until I remembered we didn’t have one blizzard to enjoy. At least we had October. Other than longshot who would have guessed that was it?

  17. Hi trolls. I hear you knockin’ but ya can’t come in. 😉

    ___________________________________________

Working on The Week Ahead soon – taking a little advantage of outside and later sunset first. 🙂

Preview: As if you haven’t already heard, what a week we have coming up. One “unsettled day” for part of Tuesday and even that will be quite nice.

  18. Just think it will probably be in the 70’s on a daily basis in just 4-6 weeks, then summer is not far.

      1. Nah me either. If I remember historically it’s up and down for a bit. Nothing to rule out another storm just seems odd are against it

  19. Will spring clean our porch tomorrow and then think about taking some of the glass windows out – not sure about that part – will see how the week goes -either way will be out there a lot !! The glass went in later than we have put them in for the past 30 years this past fall. Only fitting I guess if it comes out earlier than ever too – normally around memorial day. Only caveat is that the porch is then coated with pollen when it comes time.

  20. Question for the bloggers. Has any of you signed up for weatherbell.com. Was thinking of joining. Your opinions are appreciated. thanks

      1. Not on this blog, On cbs4 blog i had asked. But no one ever replied. I use to enjoy Joe D post on intellicast back when he was on there. Joe B is working for them too. Its $16 a month, so i am a little hesitant to join.

  21. I see that there could be some days this week with sea breezes. Well, that guarantees 45F or so in easternmost Marshfield, while the 495 belt is near 70F. Marshfield has as raw and cold a seabreeze as I have ever seen. Of course, in the middle of summer, I’ve seen it 82F or so at my house and 95F, five miles inland in Pembroke.

      1. Big picture, better. Have my strength back and no more chills. But, I haven’t fully been able to get my throat, I guess, uncongested and thus, a cough continues. I am back to work tomorrow though and looking forward to that !!!

        1. We all had that 2 years ago. Our throats stayed congested for weeks. I Believe the doctor finally prescribed a steroid nasal spray for me since I lasted longer. Good luck and take care of yourself

  22. Per Taunton NWS climo……Logan is 3.44 inches below normal YTD and Hartford, CT, Worcester, MA and Providence, RI are 2 to 3 inches below normal YTD.

This is not going to be a good week for soil moistures, etc. The sun at solar noon on Tuesday in Boston hits the 45 degree mark above the horizon.

I was out in my back yard today and usually this time of year, the ground is either still frozen or, if it’s not, it can be like a sponge that you sink into, as a puddle of water forms underfoot. It’s not frozen and it’s not muddy at all, but rather dry.

  23. Cat 966G At least you didn’t wear out that $1,800.00 cutting edge ?Last year we were changing blades like changing your socks !!!

    1. Last year I wore out 2 cutting edges, But broke the plow spring on the 2 day storm at the end of Jan had to push back streets that had not been pushed back. The weight of the snow and the spring being old, caused it to break.

  24. To the comments above I was watching the YouTube videos from some of the biggest snowstorms we had last winter and I went through the photos that my family and I took last winter including a few with me standing on top of those big snowbanks. I am hoping next winter is better. My early call for next winter snowfall will still be below normal but closer to normal and I think this summer is going to continue with this above normal temperature regime.

    1. Hey Jimmy, why do you feel it will be below normal in terms of snowfall. I wish i took more pictures of the snow last year, I plow snow for the town of clinton with a front end loader. and I had the snow banks the highest i have ever seen. May not ever see that again. I am glad i found you guys on this blog. I enjoyed reading blog post from many of you on the cbs4 blog last year. This blog is better because there does not seem to be any trouble makers.

  25. Wow new people – very exciting ! Or I missed you posting earlier and if so I apologize. If not welcome. 🙂 🙂

  26. Barry just posted is latest blog and has indicated that he feels the dreaded sea breeze may make a few intrusions over the next couple of weeks into our weather. A good explanation of why, etc. The interesting part of it is that even with the seabreeze he is still calling for temps in the upper 40’s to low 50’s along the immediate coast. That’s still 5-10 degrees above normal. I’ll take it!

  27. Hey Cat966…. Welcome to this blog. I am going with a little bit of a gut feeling right now and there are indications an El Nino may develop and that tends to lead to above normal temperatures for us. I said back in August that Boston would not exceed 50 inches for this winter but I did not expect we would be in the 2 spot for least snowiest winter on record. El Nino is one thing to look at. Other factors are the NAO, the temperatures for October and November because when they are above normal that tends to lead to a mild snowless winter and when they are below normal that tends to lead to a colder and snowier winter.
As we saw this winter when you get measurable snowfall in October that leads to below normal snowfall.

I am looking forward to the NCAA tournament beginning this week. Who do you have winning the National Championship??
I am thinking its going to be Kentucky cutting down the nets in New Orleans on Monday April the 2nd.

    1. To be honest with you jimmy. I don’t really follow College basketball. I my favorite sports are MLB and NFL. Thank for your answer to my question. I will say this though, 2002-2003 and 2004-2005 were el nino years if i remember correctly. Both had above normal snow falls. Not saying this will happen but something to keep in the back of our minds.

  28. I discovered your blog website through blog page catalog. I believed I’d verify out the article as I just wrote on this subject at this time. You include some superb solutions that I failed to have. Thanks for that recommendations.
