The other night throughout tv prime time there was persistent advertising about a Covid-19 vaccine specifically for teens 12-15. I forget the name but it began with a “C”.
I’ll repeat that I voted for Biden and think he has done well in some areas. But this nonsense has to stop….
I am pro choice. The oft repeated mantra of folks who are pro choice is leave my body alone. I agree. But then I support mandatory vaccines (except for religious reasons). I stopped in my tracks last night wondering how I reconcile those two views.
They’re not easy to reconcile. But, many of us (myself included) hold these views. Qualitatively, there are some subtle differences in the two views, specifically related to the kind of autonomy involved and its consequences for the person’s health as well as the health of others who come into contact with that person. I think this is where one can justify holding these seemingly inconsistent views. On one hand, a woman’s reproductive choice impacts the woman and the unborn fetus, but no-one else. On the other hand, a person’s decision not to have an MMR vaccine, a polio inoculation, or even a Covid-19 vaccine (they do cut down on transmission rates, despite all the breakthroughs) impacts the herd and society at large.
Perfect response. Thank you. That makes sense. I’m glad I thought out loud. I’ve been debating with myself.
China’s Zero Covid policy rolls on. There are two opposing viewpoints regarding this draconian policy: 1. The Chinese are determined to curb spread to reduce deaths and long Covid, and know something we don’t about Covid’s impact; 2. The Chinese regime is all about authoritarian control.
I think the opposing viewpoints aren’t quite as orthogonal as we think. I believe that both 1 and 2 apply.
I’d agree re 1 and 2. But what do they know?
I reread that and my last sentence can be read two different ways. I meant what do they know that we do not.
I must say I’ve always had trouble understanding this kind of data. I admire those who have hard-wired scientific brains. I do not. I certainly understand elementary statistics, algebra and basic calculus. But that’s the extent of my math skills.
From what I could gather, the data (from mice – I now have images of coughing field mice) suggest that the latest version of the vaccine does a better job at preventing severe illness caused by BA.5 than previous vaccines (especially by lowering the chance of severe disease in the lungs).
I’m now holding off on my booster until the human clinical data is released in October. I’ll get my booster and flu shot then.
Comment of the day

Joshua that is kind of what I thought but wasn’t sure. Thank you. I’ll get flu in October too. I’ve had flu break through the vaccine in spring and believe the vax protection decreases after 5/6 months. For me. I have reacted to all covids so think it’s better for me to not do two together. Again for me. We are all very different
I don’t like fearmongering reports that are speculative in nature. And so, I’m very cautious about reporting new outbreaks of disease, or even new strains of Covid. You’ll recall my caution about BA.2.75, which has so far turned out to be a dud. But, I do find recent reports on a mysterious pneumonia in Argentina troubling. https://twitter.com/sneweyy/status/1565290406664871937
OMG. What next.
You reminded me of a question I keep meaning to ask.
A very wise doctor at children’s suggested my 10 yr old grand have her Pneumococcal titer levels checked. Sure enough they were very low. It makes me wonder if anyone thought to check the titers of the folks who ended up with pneumonia from covid. Or if older folks had their vax
Just curious and probably not related. Although have we stressed making sure older folks have their pneumonia vaccines. I may have missed it since I’ve had both so just didn’t listen.
I received my flu shot today at CVS with no appointment necessary. I suspect though in the coming weeks appointments will be required as more people rush to get it.
As for my Omicron booster, I’ll get it either later this month or in October. Hopefully my healthcare provider will contact me on that.
Did you go to the CVS in Copley Square? I went to my local CVS and asked about the flu shot specifically, and they told me I had to schedule an appointment. That’s when I decided to combine both shots when I schedule the Covid booster in October. But, I’d rather not get the double whammy feel of 2 shots.

400 deaths per day.
Yep. But heck it’s over.
Warning. Thinking out loud here
