Reading up on the sub-variants, I do NOT think BA.4.6 is trouble. I also don’t think BJ.1 is trouble. I do think that BA.2.75.2 is possible trouble. It is the wildcard, in my view, as it evades BA.5 immunity. It acts like a whole new variant. This would neuter, at least to some degree, the bivalent booster we’re getting. I’ll still get the booster, as I think it offers some immunity.
Hopefully my healthcare provider Brigham will have booster vaccine clinics next month.
Joshua, would this be potentially the last Covid booster until next year this time? Just once a year like the flu?
Yes, it probably will get updated once a year. The problem of course is what I referenced in my post. The updated boosters don’t account for the latest sub-variants to hit the scene. This said, I do not think that booster coverage is binary: You either have it or don’t. It usually falls in the gray area. Regardless of which booster you get, they provide some coverage (immunity), especially against the possibility of developing severe disease.
Does influenza have a different “variant” each year? Am I correct that each flu shot is different every year to compensate?
Is “variant” the same as “strain” in the influenza world if you will?
Joshua please correct me if I am wrong.
A flu vaccine usually is trivalent or quardrivalent covering three or four strains. I seem to recall tri covers two type A and one type B.
In the past the tri which includes an immune booster is recommended for seniors. After I ended up with a nasty confirmed flu years ago when I had the tri, I’ve been opting for the quad
Last year they had some new type of vaccine. Joshua I don’t recall much about that because as you know I tend to be wary of “new”
You reminded me that I had intended to post this (Covid vs flu) last night and was side tracked. Thanks, Philip
Eligible kids, their parents and staff need to booster for the fall. Otherwise schools could be in for a major setback and mask mandates may have to be put back in place.
TV ads need to be shown every millisecond to get boosted in the next two months!
It may be a bit too late
I’ve lost track of recommended booster and timing for the booster following the first two vaccines. Anyone?
One of the MDs I follow tweeted that boosting will not make the dent it should if mitigation is not in place. For schools to outright forbid testing that is beyond belief.
Also the government is no longer offering free tests and I just had trouble finding test kits. I am eligible for eight free monthly through Medicare but that doesn’t do me an ounce of good if tests are not available.
You. Can’t. Fix. Stupid
Sadly, I think our sweet little hummingbirds are moving south. I had a window feeder beside the chair I sit in for coffee, news and Wordle each morning. One male who I called top hat visited it too many times to count. Two days ago he hovered in the other window for an unusually long time. That was last I saw of him. Maybe he was saying goodbye for now. ❤️
Wrong blog. Sorry Moving to weather since it is weather related.
That’s okay. hummingbirds migrate when it gets below 50F.
Been away all day biking. Just saw your post on flu vaccines being multivalent. This is true.
Thank Joshua. I love winter but will miss my hummers
