Saturday December 24 2022 Forecast (9:09AM)

DAYS 1-5 (DECEMBER 24-28)

Christmas Weekend will be a cold one, and mainly dry, behind the big storm. Today will be the windier of the the two days, and some ocean-effect snow is expected along the South Coast, especially Cape Cod and the Islands. Otherwise, generally dry weather is expected with only the remote chance of a few snow flurries making their way into the region via the Great Lakes. Cold weather eases up slightly but generally continues into early next week. Watching for a disturbance with a snow shower threat about Tuesday.

TODAY: Sun/cloud mix. Isolated to scattered snow showers possible, especially South Coast. Snow accumulation of up to 3 inches islands, especially Martha’s Vineyard, and up to 1 inch South Coast especially Cape Cod. Highs 20-27. Wind SW 15-25 MPH, higher gusts. Wind chill around 10.

TONIGHT (CHRISTMAS EVE): Partly cloudy. Isolated snow showers, but additional scattered snow showers in the South Coast region. Lows 12-19. Wind WSW 10-20 MPH. Wind chill below 10.

SUNDAY (CHRISTMAS): Mostly sunny. Slight chance of an isolated light snow shower. Highs 23-30. Wind W 5-15 MPH, higher gusts. Wind chill below 20.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 12-19. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 26-33. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 13-20. Wind WSW up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny. Chance of snow showers. Highs 28-35. Wind SW 5-15 MPH shifting to NW.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 15-22. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 32-39. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

DAYS 6-10 (DECEMBER 29 – JANUARY 2)

Temperature moderation heading through the last few days of 2022 with fair weather as high pressure moves off the coast, after which we get into some unsettled weather – likely rain, as a frontal system and low pressure area move through the region, to start the new year.

DAYS 11-15 (JANUARY 3-7)

A bit of an up and down temperature pattern during this period with a battle between the Southeast ridge and high pressure in eastern Canada seems to be shaping up. Typical La Nina pattern. Too soon to time any disturbances / unsettled weather.

  1. Thanks TK.

Nantucket may very well end up with a White Christmas while the rest of the mainland goes bare. According to Dave Epstein, maybe a few inches depending on the setup.

This is the coldest morning of the season I do believe. Not the absolute worst though. Good that very little froze up and the Boston neighborhood streets got treated.

  2. Mesoscale weather events (like the snow band that gave Fitchburg area 2 to 5 1/2 inches of snow last evening and the ocean-effect band over MVY) are always factors hard to forecast, but they have impact, so some of these areas will keep some of this snow for today and tomorrow. 🙂

I only have 3 inch top amounts in my MVY forecast, but honestly if they got 4 or 5 it wouldn’t surprise me.

  3. We got an inch or two here in Lunenburg. It was fun watching the snow flying almost horizontally starting at about 8pm last night. I guess we will technically have a white Christmas here.

  4. Good morning , wind is pretty much non existent around here as I’ve been out & about since 7:30 this morning, very cold indeed . I feel like we escaped the storm big time here . I think the strongest winds in my opinion were at 7pm last night . There were some scattered outages around town & the area but I’m not hearing or seeing anything to bad , Duxbury was very busy with a 3 alarm fire ( With the wind ) & some areas were flooded out . Merry Christmas

  5. Thanks TK. Merry Christmas to you all! Glad to still have this space to talk SNE weather, even if from afar in my case.

Winter Storm Warning for Martha’s Vineyard (and only Martha’s Vineyard) for 5-10 inches of snow accumulation. That is pretty insane, possibly one of the most unique/unusual mesoscale weather events ever in the SNE region?

      1. The snow was forecast, but the amount like that is virtually impossible to forecast for such a narrow area for a synoptic scale event.

I’ve actually been talking about the ocean effect snow with the southwest wind for the last 3 or 4 days. So yeah, it was definitely in the forecast as an event.

        1. I should have said the amount as yes I have seen you mention that . I was actually hoping for a coating here .

    1. Absoltely fascinating. I am also very happy you have this space and still visit it. Merry Christmas, WxWatcher.

    1. I’m guessing since he’s Jewish he’s giving an opportunity for one of the Mets who celebrates Christmas to have the night with their family. Classy guy.

      1. Thanks for posting that Harvey was on this evening! Would have loved to have seen him on television but at least I got to see him online at the website. He’s still got it! 🙂

These young tv mets continue to make me cringe. Boy, would I like to see Barry make a “surprise” appearance on air one day. Not that it’s likely to ever happen I suppose.

A weather unrelated note: Bob Lobel will be on WBZ’s Sports Final tomorrow night at 11:35 p.m. 🙂
