  1. XBB variant is dominant form of COVID-19
    in Northeast
A new coronavirus variant called XBB has swiftly become the dominant form of COVID-19 spreading in the Northeast, jumping from about 35 percent of cases during the week ending Dec. 17 to just over half last week, according to CDC data.

The rapid spread indicates that the XBB variant is more adept than its predecessors at evading the immunity that comes from vaccines and infections.

But significantly, one researcher said, there is no reason to think that XBB causes more severe disease than other variants.

  2. Wastewater levels way up again in the Boston area. I’m hearing from many people who have Covid. https://twitter.com/jonlevyBU/status/1608831185320574977

The good news is that influenza levels are diminishing. The bad news is that Covid keeps rearing its ugly head. So far, it’s in the form of new Omicron sub-variants. But, the evolutionary capacity of SARS-CoV-2 to mutate into new variants quickly can’t be ignored.

    1. Is the XBB an omicron variant?

I hope schools use at least some common sense and reinstate masks for at least a couple of weeks after break. IIRC, last year we has just under 10,000 kids and teachers a day testing positive.
