  1. Thanks, TK. I am not surprised that the temps. aren’t going to be in the 80’s early nxt. wk. I’m not sure what direction the wind will be coming from – but whether it is from the east or the south, as I think someone mentioned in an earlier post, the water is still too cool for 80’s.

Really pretty sky this morning. A real spring look to it. Patches of blue in-between lots of clouds with dark areas off to the horizon. It is dark off to the northeast – must be the brief shower we just had in Sudbury. The sun is out now. It is cool out – but the little rain we got is glistening on the leaves. I love it when the sky and weather is changeable, especially in the spring-summer! πŸ™‚

    1. Good morning, Rainshine – I was just looking up at the sky when I came here. We are having another sprinkle too. Fairly solid grey clouds overhead now but blue all around near the horizon. My grandson got a weather book for Easter and he and I go out every day to see if he can match the clouds in the sky to the clouds in the pictures.

  2. Another massive earthquake off the coast of Indonesia and Sumatra this morning. It registered 8.6, not quite as strong as the quake in 2004 or the 2011 Japan quake (both were 9.1) that generated those deadly tsunamis. Tsumani warnings were up across the Pacific. Lots of evacuations but so far, thankfully, no reports of anything.

    1. I saw that – they said the quake was lateral this time as opposed to vertical last time so there would HOPEFULLY be less chance of a tsunami – I sure hope that is the case

    2. not to mention they were different kinds than the one that hit in 2004 indonesia quake and 2011 japan quake 2004 The one that happened today was more horizontally, with the tectonic plates sliding against each other, just making vibrations the other kind of quake a mega thrust, which is what hit off Japan last year and the 2004 quake of Indonesia, causes the seabed to shake and displaces water vertically, sending tsunami waves racing toward shores.

  3. Who you gonna believe? Euro vs. GFS. Below is NWS this morning

DUE TO SYNOPTIC SCALE DIFFERENCES IN THE HANDLING OF NRN STREAM
WAVE INTERACTION WITH SUBTROPICAL RIDGE…IT IS AT THIS POINT THAT
FORECAST CONFIDENCE LOWERS SOMEWHAT. THIS IS PARTICULARLY TRUE IN
TIMING…AND SENSIBLE WX IMPACTS FROM BOTH A WARM FRONT /SUN
TIMEFRAME/ AND A COLD FRONT /MON TIMEFRAME/ AS LOW PRES PASSES
WELL N OF THE REGION. THE SLOWER ECMWF/ECENS/GEFS MEAN SOLN IS
PREFERRED WITH THIS FEATURE. USING THIS SOLN AS A BASE…SRN NEW
ENGLAND REMAINS MOSTLY UNDER INFLUENCE OF RIDGING TO THE SW.
INITIAL WARM FRONTAL PASSAGE IS EXPECTED EARLY SUN MORNING WITH
SHOWERS LIKELY…ALTHOUGH ECMWF QPF IS LIKELY TOO ROBUST GIVEN THE
DRY AIRMASS SUGGESTED IN THE SOUNDINGS. DUE TO THE STRONGER
RIDGING…THE AREA SHOULD SEE MUCH OF THE WARM SECTOR…WITH
HIGHER MAX TEMPS BOTH SUN AND MON. IT ALSO DELAYS THE ARRIVAL OF A
COLD FRONT TO EARLY MON MORNING…AND PUSHES IT THROUGH MOSTLY DRY
WITH HIGH PRES BUILDING OVER FROM THE NW. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE STILL
SOME DIFFERENCES TO RESOLVE…WILL CONTINUE WITH THE ECMWF/HPC
    BASED SOLN WITH THIS FORECAST.

  4. Hoping the showers hold off tomorrow evening for my 6-year old’s first flag football game of the spring season. Last year we dealt with a damp, muddy field all season. I don’t think we will be seeing that this year. Sunday is looking good for Castle Island. Time to hit the playground, take a walk, and perhaps stop for a little treat at Sully’s.

    1. Now that sounds fun!!! We are thinking of heading to Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester and then Bear Skin Neck on Sunday. OR the Butterfly place and Kimball’s in Westford πŸ™‚ Tough decisions when the weather gets warmer 😎

  5. Saw the 1st little green worm hanging from the tree ready to eat the leaves, figures there about 3 weeks early too, enjoy the beautiful spring day πŸ™‚

  6. There are some showers out in the Albany area. The sun is out rather strongly now – wondering if and when those showers get in our area if we might get some heavier showers or even thunder due to daytime heating? Or are the conditions not right for that?

      1. Thanks, Charlie. I was thinking it might be too cool for that, but certainly you can get some instability no matter the temp. as long as conditions are right. I’m just wishing for summer already! πŸ™‚

        1. I would expect much but it’s possible after 2 or 3pm a few light showers could stroll a across the area

  7. Sue, Ditto on the Castle Island . Was there last week with the grandkids . Great destination !!!

    1. We go there quite a bit. My 4 year old is obsessed with the planes landing at Logan. There is a cool website you can use to see which runway the planes are using which sometimes determines if we are making the trip. πŸ™‚

  8. I don’t think there’s a lot of rain coming in the future. Maybe a few showers on warm and cold frontal passages the next 10 days, but most of the heavy rain is slated for N/W of New England. Look at the 850 mb temps from the EURO for Monday and Tuesday. I don’t know about a cool down.

    1. Yea, warm out thru at least Tuesday. Even the GFS is beginning to show the same trend. Could be some moisture around for Wednesday into Thursday, but that’s a long way off. Temps seem to be trending a little higher. At least that’s my interpretation.

  9. I’m starting to lean toward the possibility toward us getting close to 80 degrees next week, especially if that storm goes west of us.

    1. It’s an interesting early week forecast for temps. I think ch 4 has Tuesday at 58 and Ch 7 has 80, cooler coast. It could be cloudy with an ocean component to the breeze, but Tuesday’s 850mb temps on the EURO are +14C !!!

    2. We are all wishing it so for Tom’s vacation πŸ™‚ We will plan to live at the beach vicariously through Tom !!!

  10. 5 and 25 show a cooler Tuesday too with a warmer wednesday. 7 has a warmer Tuesday and a cooler Wednesday. Both 500 and 850 mb favor a warm tues and we’d with the euro a bit more aggressive than the GFS. Any way you cut it, it’s going to warm up considerably with little in the way of rain. Long range GFS still shows cooler temps by Thursday and a chance at rain. But 10 days out is an eternity.

  11. some areas up stream must of had some shower activity there was a rise in the water at the second dock.

  12. well i guesss i can not do senior skip day :/ i been sick yesterday and today and still feeling lousy but i have to go to school or i will have to do all the finals. In order to be excused from finals you need to be a senior, you need an 87 or higher for and average grade first 3 quarters and then a 87 average from forth quarter to progress reports and on top of that have less than 10 unexused tardies /days off and can not have 3 or more days out in the forth quarter. and it is forth quarter and I already have to take trig and physic finals and i do not want to take any of the others .I also found out that the girl that I have known since 8 grade and been friends , I have helped her out alot, I asked her to prom , i went to the play she was in , gave her a bunny for easter and gave her flowers after the play she decideds to ask someone else out so yeah I am not having a good week. this happened yesterday when I was out sick and now most important the pool has several leaks in the pipes πŸ™ At least i will only be in school for 2 days this week. and it looks like a good vacation activity wise and weather wise. I can not wait for saturday

    1. Awww Matt Im sorry You are not feeling well and really sorry your friend let you down that just stinks

I know you are hurting and it won’t help much but you are a very fine young man and you have many years to find what you are looking for. And i Know you will I’m so glad you are comfortable talking to all of us. Thank you πŸ™‚

        1. I’m glad cause I really meant every word – just keep smiling. My guess is you are finding strength in your family too πŸ™‚

    2. Who is this other guy she left you for while you were down and out? Let’s go for a ride and egg his house or something.

        1. Just getting back to normal. Making slow progress πŸ™‚

No tracks but we did use your sticker suggestion as well as some of her favorite snacks. Enormous success. Her birthday party is this weekend and she is inviting everyone to her party. Including the people at home depot . It was too funny.

  13. Sorry Matt!! Trust me that there are plenty of other opportunities and she is the one missing out on you!! Keep your chin up!

  14. So are we going to get any rain in our future? The Herring arrived the earliest ever in Weymouth and the last time they were early we had a drought. The worms in my compost pile have not left yet either so what is going on? Thanks for your help.

  15. With ocean temps already around 50 degrees I’m wondering if they will be around 60 degrees for memorial day weekend, the ocean rises about 1 degree per week until early Aug so we could be looking at ocean temps in the mid 70’s off cape cod this yr πŸ™‚

  16. I was watching the TV mets tonight, and I tell you the high temps they give for Sun-Mon are all over the place. I think Todd tonight gave a high of 70 for Mon after saying 80 very early in the week and then lowering it to 60 yesterday.

      1. I am back in school i guess its a start….. not really i still do not feel good i just can not miss more than 2 days of school in order to be so i have to come to school even if i am sick. at least the weekend looks nice.

  17. Irrigation gets turned on today and planting flowers this weekend, it’s a family tradition for us to plant the 30 flowers and plants we got, every yr 2nd week of April we plant them, have a great day everyone πŸ™‚

  18. It is in my oppinion absolutely critical that we need a good dose of rain. I am about to go out and start soaking plants and trees at work, second day doing this. Everything is drying up. Evergreens, rose bushes you name it. I have never done this at this time of year hear. I spent an hour on one section yesterday. When I was done it honestly looked like I had spent five minutes on it. We do have sprinkler systems but plumbing has not turned on yet.

    1. I turned on my drip irrigation system for my plants in the front yard last week. They looked good but I did not want to risk anything.

    2. We had about a half an inch here last night – I was surprised. The ground in still quite wet and smells wonderful.

Coastal does the drip work with the hoses going through the beds, attached to the spicket (sp?) and then you just leave the water turned on low? The majority of my beds are set up so that I could run a continuous hose through them.

      1. I went to home depot and purchased the plastic tubing, corners, pressure gauge, small rubber hose and emitters that are rated at different gallon per hour. I ran the plastic tube through the beds and under the walkway in a 2″ PVC Sleeve. I installed the PVC before the walkway was installed. You simply poke a hole into the plastic tube and install a connector and push the rubber hose onto it. From there you run the rubber hose to the base of the plant and install the properly rated drip outlet. thy come in several different rating, 1/2, 1 and 2 gallons per hour. It is extremely easy to install and can be install by someone with no construction or plumbing experience. I have the plastic tube connected to a timer and that is connected to the hose bib. I have it set to water every three days for a hour each time.

The kit is similar to this: http://www.lowes.com/pd_320744-1029-MLK-VEG_0__?productId=3134155&Ntt=drip+irrigation&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Ddrip%2Birrigation&facetInfo=

I think the one you leave on all day might be a waste of water. Especially soak er hoses. This drip system I installed puts the water right at the base of the plants. I try to give it a deep soaking every three does so the root system travels down rather than side to the side.

All in all it probably costs $200 at the most and a afternoon to install. Well work the investment when you figure how much we spent on the plants.

        1. Wow – thanks Coastal – I’m going to look into this. We already have a timer we use for times we are away – this would be great!

  19. Not looking good Coastal. These hit and miss showers aren’t the answer either. The ground is so dry that even if it rains .10 inch doesnt do anything to soak the ground and it just runs off!!

    1. I agree but in the situation we are in I will take anything. I am leery about investing any money into re-seeding bare spots in my yard. It might be a waste of money this year if we don’t get some rain this spring and summer.

      1. Good point, Coastal, about the reseeding – I hadn’t thought of that. We need to but maybe we’ll focus on fertilizing and getting rid of weeds and then reseed in the fall when we should anyway – at least in the front of the house that gets nearly 100% sun and has absolutely no shade.

  20. The oddest part of all is that with so little moisture the flowering shrubs are more vibrant than I have seen in years. My forsythia are just now losing some of their brilliance and they are thicker and healthier than they have been for a while. Even the grass in our area is greener than I remember for mid April.

    1. Yes but it will be hard to keep up. You need a sprinkler system. They just had meeting telling plumbing to turn ours on. Never been this early. Bone dry, believe me.

      1. I agree and understand completely John – I just can’t figure how it’s so lush having not had any real moisture to speak of since fall

    2. they might be making larger root systems which means in general that they are going deeper in the ground sucking moisture that down deeper that actually can be healthier for the plants. but something that I usually do is put barrels at the corners of my house to collect rain water whidh is always good to do if you have a cover to keep it all in . i still have some water in the barrels but not much.

      1. great point about deeper roots Matt – does the fact that you are posting mean you didn’t feel well enough to go to school again πŸ™

          1. I have a study at that time usually i am in the library looking at different stuff. Looking at several things of data that i have put on flash drives

  21. After today with a front coming through giving us some much needed showers we will be in a warmer streach with temps in the 60s and 70s. the warmest day looks to be on sunday but there will be a chance of late afternoon showers. Another front will come through saturday night or sunday and then another one later next week. We have chances of showers but we will not see that good soaker that us gardeners want

    1. John remember what they say about the boy who cried wolf? Is this like a couple of weeks ago you said it was snowing in pembroke??

  22. The rain is moving north to south and all of it is missing SE Mass. We have been the driest area of the state this past winter and spring and really could use some of the rain just west of us by a few miles.

    1. The heaviest rain falls right in line were the sea breeze ends. Nicely shown on weather underground.

      1. I was watching that coastal – interesting and unfortunately it’s again a case of the gets and gets not.

  23. Lots of hail reports now across MA and NH. I am on the NWS Spotter e-mail list and just got this message:

..Convective Showers and thunderstorms are producing small hail over numerous locations across Southern New England and this can be expected through early evening. There is an outside chance of a thunderstorm producing marginally severe hail but the most likely scenario is for showers and thunderstorms to produce many small hail reports. SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the situation. This will be the only coordination message sent on this event. Below are some locations reporting small hail today so far and times are approximate..

1057 AM: Millville, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1123 AM: Windham, NH: Pea Sized Hail
1125 AM: Danvers, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1125 AM: Haverhill, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1125 AM: Andover, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1130 AM: North Attleboro, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1132 AM: Peabody, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1134 AM: Cambridge, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1134 AM: Melrose, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1134 AM: Brookline, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1145 AM: North Andover, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1152 AM: Merrimac, Mass: Pea Sized Hail
1153 AM: Northampton, Mass: Pea Sized Hail

  24. Sun out but very dark to the northwest – doppler radar colorful. Long time since we’ve seen that! I know this precip. isn’t going to help much, but nonetheless, anything is a help, I s’pose. Almost looks like a summer sky.

    1. rainshine – did you get the rain last night – I was surprised to see it measure just under a half inch

      1. I thought I heard some dripping in the gutters outside the window last night – around 2:00 or so? But whatever fell dried up fast by morning.

  25. Do you believe me now vicki. Just got done pouring again, no hail this time. I have been out feeding all of the plants, I am soaked .

    1. as I said – remember the story about the boy who cried wolf – he only had himself to blame when what he said was questioned 😈

  26. Hail in Framingham – a lot of it – and yes John I really mean it πŸ™‚

    My grandson calls it rainsnow

    1. I think the tv mets are too low on their temps. I think they don’t want to cry wolf on Warner temps then it not pan out. I think central mass away from the coast could see a few 80’s here and there.

      1. The wind direction will be key, but with 850 mb temps above 10C, the insanely dry air mass, and with enough sun, reaching 80 degrees will be no problem.

  27. Pouring rain in Northbridge. No hail though. Pete B said in his blog last night we could see some small hail. Guess he was right!
Not sure how much rain we got. I’m guessing maybe a tenth.

        1. Those photos are absolutely amazing. 4 feet of hail?? That has got to be some sort of record. The photos from the interstate make it look like it was a mid winter storm.

  28. With these off/on downpours since late morning, this should certainly at least put an end to the brush fire danger for awhile.

    1. Philip – there’s a nice gentle rain here now. With the rain last night having the ground here somewhat damp it seems that even the hail was able to be absorbed rather than bounce off. I sure hope you are right about the fire danger decreasing. I’ll take it !!

  29. Just a brief heavy shower here in Walpole around lunchtime. No hail, yet anyways. Looks like the entire state of RI is engulfed in a heavy shower right now moving north to south.

  30. Hail, rain and thunder came through about 1 hour ago and it is finally wet outside but i do not know how much rain we got i am going to go out and see my rain gauge.

  31. Very dry still here on the coast, south of Boston. Think Seabreeze is stabilizing things here by the ocean.

    1. Those showers can’t make it into Marblehead, if I were to just drive 2 miles west I would find rain.

  32. Boy, those Mon/Tues high temp forecasts in southern New England are going to be fun. Sharp temp gradient and potential seabreezes….it could be anywhere from 55F to 85F and over a very small distance.

    1. As I mentioned above, the TV mets have been all over the place when it comes to Mon temps — day of the Boston Marathon.

      1. In looking on ch5, Harvey is saying odds increasing for 80s for marathon….the EURO looks very warm !

      2. On the TV mets all over the place, they have good reason. Very warm aloft, yet a high to the north with a low approaching the great lakes. Where that cool front stalls is anyone’s guess. If the wind stays west or southwest, summer city. If the front dribbles by and the wind goes northeast, get out the spring jackets. This could be one of those things where Hopkington is 82F and 26.2 miles away, it’s 55F with low clouds and fog.

        1. Pete’s gone with 88F Monday…..of course, tomorrow could come along and look totally different with a stronger cool push out of eastern Canada.

  33. wow hail storm for a period of 10 minutes with the ground covered in it it looks like it snowed . It looked like it was snowing but it was not. I went outside and collected some hail samples the largest i measured was the size of a nickle

  34. Our good friend Pete B has 88 on Monday, now just going to compare his 7 day from the one put out this morning by the morning tv met…

      1. Will just have to start working on that rain and 50s for later in the week. I know we’re in a serious drought and desperately need rain, but it’s not allowed during my vacation. πŸ™‚ Let it rain starting Monday April 23rd, so my students will concentrate and I can get them ready for the math MCAS in mid May.

  35. looking at some of the data that my 2 weather stations have collected by computer. Both of them i can connect to by computer which is cool. I also have 3 home made water buoys ( Dad and grandfather gave them to me.) They are made of plastic and wood. the higher the meter the higher the water level is. Currently drizzling out right now and the wind is coming off the marsh. i went out there around 3 pm and the river rose a few inches. Its a slow process put hopefully a really good soaking rain effects an area up stream and rises the water level.

      1. What I am really not understading is Monday. So far this week, I have seen one station that had a minimum of a 25 degree swing for that day alone.

  36. So, does it appear that those warm/hot temps (85-90) for Monday will definitely verify…or could things still change again in future forecasts?

IIRC Marathon 2010 was hot too. I do feel for the runners.

  37. I guess I am going to answer my own question.

According to NWS evening discussion, record high temps are now assured for Monday. The record for Boston is 84 set in 2003. Based on Harvey and Pete’s forecasts, that record should be smashed easily. Again, too bad for the runners. πŸ™

Also, both the Euro and GFS show good rains for next Wednesday/Thursday although Euro is much more robust. If this verifies we should be all set through late spring at least. We will see. πŸ™‚

I never thought that I would ever use a πŸ™‚ face for rain.

    1. which means that i will be opening my dock if thats the case. We allow neibors to use the docks and the second dock has had 5 kayaks. One of my neibors and i race. sometimes

      1. should have said that the first one which is closest to the house will probably be able to be opened for people to use if the storm actually happens.

  38. Just saw Harvey’s forcast and he is saying 80 or hotter for Monday, he is usually very good on his forcasting so I believe this will happen. Although I welcome this, very bad for the runners. Many running will not finish this race. Not good news for them. You can cramp up more easily and dehydration will kick in quickly.

    1. He’s been going back and forth too. Judging from comments here good reason too. Although I had a feeling when Pete said …………..how long ago …. That it was in the cards if nothing else

      1. There is an area in Pembroke my daughter has been looking at. She wanted me to ask you about it She is out and I can’t remember. Maybe plain st. Hobo something area. See how specific I can be. If you can make heads or tails of that I will be very impressed.

        1. Hobomock. I think your daughter would be very happy here. This is a great family country town. Good schools.

      2. They were all going by the timing of a cold front. Harvey said that front would not make it in giving us 80+ for monday.

  39. Running cross country in middle school and high school I never liked warm days. The best temps are 50s and 60s for running in my opinion.

    1. Agree. Although I ran good in heat, but not a marathon. So much training goes
into this day. But like I said you will see a very full medical tent. Even top notch runners will be a step back. You have temps that could exceed 80+ and the runners are running at a time of day when the sun is the strongest 10-2, so they have that hot sun beeting down on them.

      1. My buisiness associate is a runner and volunteers at the 14 mile marker every year. As you know son did it last year. John. When did you run it. It’s incredible to watch.

        1. 2007 not realy any running exp. I trained very, very hard. five hrs 33 minutes and 45 seconds. I was happy.
They stop the race time at six hrs. It was my sons birthday and I crossed the finish line with him.

          1. John that’s exceptional. Just doing the marathon – even if a person walks it – ia amazing. And I know you raised tons for children’s hosp. Gives me goosebumps full of pride.

  40. My best times were always when the weather was cool. Cramping could be an issue when you have warm temps.
Latest drought monitor has a good portion of SNE in severe drought. We could use a good soaking.

      1. Hi Vicki…. I never ran a marathon. The longest course I ever ran was 3.3 miles in high school.

    1. They’re skating well, but the Caps can at times get stingy when it comes to allowing goals.

      1. Good thing. Sadly they are too full of themselves to be embarrassed and will just come back with worse to “prove themselves”

    1. Longshot. I know nothing about hockey but thought I heard my son in law saying hed wished the Bs were not laying this team to start with since they do not have a good record with them. Hope that I heard wrong.

    1. I remember that race and it was bad for the runners. The date was April 19th, my son was born that weekend on Friday April 16th. It was hot. That entire weekend was warm. This same weekend will be warm and on Monday my buddy will be eight.

  41. Good evening all πŸ™‚ Hope everyone’s doing well. Some very nice needed rain this evening! Here’s the NWS latest on Marathon Monday and possibly for Tuesday as well.
THE LATEST ECMWF RUN INDICATES TEMPERATURES COULD BE
WELL INTO THE UPPER 80S MONDAY…WHICH WOULD SET RECORDS AT BOSTON/84 IN 2003/ AND WORCESTER /84 IN 2002/.

  42. well … well …well. people building the house next door wanted to ask me questions about the marshland. Asking if the marsh land usually has water in it and what was the highest it gone. they also wonder what the docks were that they saw from the top floor of the house they are building…. My parents asked me as well and i said that i will put it togeather but will not give it to them unless they stop messing with the land.. aka cutting more trees and elevating land they have stopped today but I am waiting a good portion of time before i give anything to them.

      1. You are wise beyond your years. And I love the well deserved faith your parents give you πŸ™‚

  43. I have a feeling this going to be a 1-0 game. Boston should be leading with all those power plays they had including that 4 minute one.

      1. This is the type of game the B’s usually lose…when they outshoot their opponent by a large margin.

  44. The one thing to look at is whether a day is going to be dry or humid is the overnight lows. The lower the number the drier the air. When those lows are in the mid 60s and higher there is going to be a humid day coming up.

  45. A very bad shooting in Greenland, NH tonight. 5 cops were shot and I think the police chief died.

  46. Yay Bruins!!!

If you have friends/family in Oklahoma or Kansas be sure to make them aware of the situation for Saturday. The eastern halves of each state are under the gun for a potentially serious tornado outbreak, and some of that may occur after dark, when things get much dicier. Next update from the SPC is a few hours away, but they have already issued a ‘Moderate’ risk three days out. That ‘never’ happens.

    1. Thank you Tornado Chris. My husband has a good friend in Kansas and will be in touch with him today.

  47. Frost overnight but not terribly heavy – got down to just under 32.

100 years of Fenway – awesome!
