Sunday April 9 2023 Forecast (7:38AM)

DAYS 1-5 (APRIL 9-13)

Happy Easter to all who celebrate it! A quick update for your Sunday. Long dry stretch of weather got underway recently and will continue through this 5-day period as high pressure dominates both at the surface and aloft. As previously stated, the position of the surface high helps determine the daily temperature profile. We start out with a cold morning and a little recovery for this afternoon. A warm-up is slated for early to midweek, being temporarily slowed Wednesday as a trough of low pressure swings through early that day, but with just some cloudiness (rain stays to north). Coastal areas will be vulnerable to sea breezes today and Monday, but a stronger land breeze is expected Tuesday and Wednesday with more influence from the trough’s approach and passage. Those 2 days will also see higher brush fire danger due to combined dry weather and more wind. Thursday, a stronger warm-up takes place but again with lighter wind, the sea breeze can develop and thwart the warm-up in many coastal locations.

TODAY: Sunny. Early to mid morning temperatures ranging from the middle 20s to middle 30s, rising into the 40s late morning and midday, peaking with highs 48-55, coolest coast, this afternoon. Wind N to variable up to 10 MPH with developing coastal sea breezes.

TONIGHT: Clear. Lows 33-40. Wind variable up to 10 MPH.

MONDAY: Sunny. Highs 53-60, coolest coast. Wind variable up to 10 MPH with coastal sea breezes.

MONDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 37-44. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Sunny to partly cloudy. Highs 63-70 except 55-62 Cape Cod region. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy. Lows 42-49. Wind W 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Partly cloudy to sunny. Highs 61-68, except cooler Cape Cod. Wind NW 5-15 MPH.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Clear. Lows 45-52. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Sunny. Highs 70-77 except significantly cooler in coastal areas. Wind W up to 10 MPH with developing coastal sea breezes.

DAYS 6-10 (APRIL 14-18)

Warmest day Friday April 14 with lots of sun, but still cooler coastal areas with developing sea breezes. Watching for a back-door cold front to cool more of the region down over the weekend of April 15-16 with a few more clouds, especially later in the weekend. May stay quite mild still well inland. Trough / front from the west brings a rain shower chance sometime early the following week (April 17-18) as a stronger westerly flow takes over.

DAYS 11-15 (APRIL 19-23)

Dry weather indications to start, unsettled weather chances mid and/or late period. Temperatures near to slightly above normal.

  1. Happy Easter.

I had a FB memory pop up from two years ago today of the grandkids playing in a sprinkler set up in the trampoline. I looked back in the whw archives and sure enough, it was 73.

      1. Slight signs of some improvement last evening. We shall see.
Still testing negative for covid and I am still well. Thank you.

    1. I hope your wife’s slight improvement is the beginning of her turning the corner.

We’re feeling the seabreeze here and may be at our high temp.

I’ll take the full sun 55 degree angle. Can feel the upstairs of our house warming up from it.

  2. JP Dave, glad to hear of some signs of improvement – may it continue & accelerate!

Easter Sunday can fall on a variety of dates from late March to mid April, so as you would know, being in our most volatile season – spring – we can and have seen a large variety of weather for the day over the years. My “favorite” Easter weather was always sunny with a high in the 60s, but we don’t get too many of those. Getting a sunny day in the spring can be a tough one to get … unless you’re in the right pattern, like now. But even a sunny day is not guaranteed to be warm, especially in coastal areas this time of year. Today it just so happens that we started out with a cold morning due to overnight radiational cooling, and while we recover back to the 50s (some upper 40s) .. still a cool day, but the lack of wind will make it feel nice, especially if you are able to be in the sun. So, certainly far from our worst Easter weather, and that can go either way. In fact, we only need to look over a span of 3 years to find about as great a variety as we have seen…

April 18 1976: Easter heat. 90+ for many. All the chocolate melted! HAHA! Boston’s high temp that Sunday was 94! It was actually a 5-day “hot spell” starting on April 16 and lasting through April 20 with highs at Boston of 82, 82, 94, 82, and 89. On Marathon Monday, April 19, it was still quite hot just inland, and the race was dubbed “The Run For The Hoses”. Hartford CT recorded an official heatwave April 17-19 with highs of 92, 95, and 96! They just missed a 4-day heatwave with a high of 89 on April 20.

March 26 1978: Just 2 years later, and nearly 3 weeks sooner in the year, a chilly, raw, overcast Easter which included about 1 inch of wet snow away from the coast for the egg hunts! Eventually the snow went over to a cold rain and drizzle.

    1. 76 I believe was a hot week. Or perhaps it was another April . It was our annual conference week at the Cooley plaza with over 500 worldwide attending. It was difficult as most had packed for early spring/late winter.

      1. 5-day stretch of warm to hot weather. Pretty brutal for so early in the season. The dew point for Easter Sunday made it into the middle 60s at Boston, which for that time of year, combined with early heat, may as well be a 70+ dew point for how it probably felt.

    2. Thank you TK. I think we’ve turned the corner.

Certainly a volatile time of year as you aptly described.

I’ll take today for sure. 🙂

  3. Don’t forget Easter 1970 with several inches of snow, including Boston. ❄️❄️❄️❄️

    1. I remember going imo Fantasia restaurant in Fresh pond Cambridge for dinner in spring and walking out at the end of the meal into winter. Later I drove my new 69 Mach I to a friends. I was barely able to drive a stick and stalled out three times on a minuscule hill at the lights in Belmont center. One great memory. One not so great.

  4. 56 here but sun is HOT. Light cool breeze felt nice as we sat out and watched all six grandkids hunt for eggs. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    1. I use a calendar app but did mark it down. It reminds me of things and at this point in life I need reminding 🙂

    2. Been on my “calendar” for a long time. I’ll be in the path of totality.

A friend of mine just happens to live dead center in the path in VT. I’ll be there. 🙂

  5. Quinnipiac’s national championship is very special. Felt a little like the Friars winning it all in 2015.

I’ve watched Quinnipiac play Harvard several times over at the Bright Arena, though the last time I saw them was probably 10 years ago.

  6. The B’s won 5-3.

63 wins for the season, a new NHL record and an epic performance. As long as the NHL maintains an 82 game season, it’ll be a tough record to beat. What a night for the team, Pasta, and the fans.

  7. I don’t want to jinx it, but there are times when the Bruins’ play on multiple lines (passing, precision, insight, clinical nature of the way the offense executes) reminds me of the Soviet Union’s KLM line in the 1980s; Krutov, Larionov, and Makarov.
