Sunday May 28 2023 Forecast (7:12AM)

DAYS 1-5 (MAY 28 – JUNE 1)

We’ve reached the mid point of the 3-day Memorial Day Weekend, and after a splendid Saturday with 100% sun and comfortable air and not too much wind, we turn the temp up a bit today with the help of a southwesterly air flow as high pressure sinks to the south of the region. As you know by now, this wind is a direct ocean breeze for the South Coast, which will be cooler. A little bit of Canadian wildfire smoke is sneaking back into the sky again, but today it will only give a slightly hazy look to the sun which otherwise will shine unimpeded once again. Tomorrow will look the same with 100% sunshine through some high altitude smoke, but it won’t feel quite the same. The reason: A back-door cold front slides down via the Gulf of Maine tonight and moves swiftly but quietly through the region and replaces the southwesterly air flow with one from the northeast. A significantly cooler Memorial Day is the result, but it will be dry with no weather problems for parades and ceremonies being held in many cities and towns in the region. Our dry pattern will continue through the middle of the coming week too. High pressure will sink southward and allow a warm-up to take place with pleasantly mild air Tuesday replaced by the feel of summer by Thursday. One thing that will be absent from the warm-up though will be high humidity, as dew points will remain low throughout the period. Despite being beyond our main fire season, the continued dryness will enhance fire danger.

TODAY: Hazy sunshine through high altitude smoke. Highs ranging widely from 65-72 Cape Cod / Islands to 82-89 interior locations with warmest in valleys. Wind S-SW 5-15 MPH.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 48-55. Wind SW 5-15 MPH evening, becoming variable under 10 MPH.

MONDAY (MEMORIAL DAY): Hazy sunshine through high altitude smoke and also some high clouds closer to the South Coast. Highs 63-70, coolest eastern coastal areas. Wind NE 5-15 MPH.

MONDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 47-54. Wind NE up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 65-72, coolest coast. Wind E up to 10 MPH.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 47-54. Wind variable under 10 MPH.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 77-84, coolest coast. Wind W up to 10 MPH but possible coastal sea breezes.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Lows 51-58. Wind W up to 10 MPH.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs 81-88, except 73-80 in some coastal areas. Wind SW 5-15 MPH may turn SSE in eastern coastal locations.

DAYS 6-10 (JUNE 2-6)

A cold front will drop southward into and across the region during June 2. The timing of this front will determine how warm it gets and how big a threat of a shower or thunderstorm becomes. Will fine-tune these aspects. June 3-4 weekend will be governed by high pressure and will be cooler with a Canadian air mass, but coolest coast with a northeasterly air flow again. High pressure sinks to the south with dry weather and a warm-up June 5-6. These changes take place during a large scale pattern evolution in which the Rex block breaks down and gives way to a weak omega block with retrogression of upper low pressure westward into our area.

DAYS 11-15 (JUNE 7-11)

A broad upper level trough is expected to be the main driver of our weather. We may see some unsettled weather with the chance of some much-needed rainfall during the early part of the period as a disturbance moves in from the west and another system possibly moves in from the south, but this threat is far enough away to carry much uncertainty. Also, it looks dry again right after that threat. No sign of major heat.

  1. Boston’s asphalt-surrounded temperature sensor sits at 60 as of 7 a.m., but there are many areas in the upper 40s to near 50 now. Given the high temp will be well into the 80s in many areas today, it’s quite the diurnal we’ll experience. Dew point stays way down. Still only 4 days in which the dew point has reached or exceeded 55 at Boston this month.

  2. Thank you, TK.

We are 75 with a cloudless blue sky. Gloucester, Boston and Plymouth are all 73. Barely a breeze which is atypical here and the air has that summer smell. Yum.

  3. Before I go on my pond walk this morning, for you music fans I am sharing this great Sunday morning tune by Dave Grusin, featuring his keyboard and programming work (the drums are actually programmed on this track by him). But he’s joined here by greats Marcus Miller on bass guitar, David Sanborn on saxophone, and the one and only Phoebe Snow on lead vocal.

    Sublime…

  4. Good morning and thank you TK.

    We made 78 yesterday.
    Low temp was 57.
    Currently at 74.

    Ocean temp: 56.48

  5. Thanks TK.

Amazing how the humidity has stayed away so far. I don’t believe it has even reached 60F to date. Too bad it probably won’t last into the upcoming summer.

    1. The dewpoint at Logan reached 65 on May 20 and 64 on May 21. Those are the only days this year it has topped 60.

    2. Disregard what I said above and include those stats.

Apparently I was sicker than I thought because those days are kind of a void. 😀

      1. Actually, what you said above was correct. Boston’s dewpoint has only reached or exceeded 55 4 times this month.

        57 on May 1
        65 on May 20
        64 on May 21
        58 on May 24

        1. Oh you’re right.. DUH. I’m just going to reset the brain and start over… HAHAHA

Whatever I had this week took everything out of me.

  6. Thanks, TK.

73F and low humidity here, too, though that is much more typical here on dry and sunny days. it’s unusual for there to be much humidity here, even when it’s warm.

  7. Celtics have already done something truly remarkable. Very few teams come back from 3 games to none to tie it up at 3 games a piece. And, no NBA team has ever come back to win a series after being down 3 games to none. The Celtics appear to be in the driver’s seat to make history happen.

I counted the Celtics out, and I was wrong to do so. The unpredictability of sport is what makes it so compelling, in my view.

    1. Very nicely said, Joshua. Your last sentence is interesting. Playoffs especially are stressful. Maybe it is the unpredictability that some fans understandably struggle with. I said earlier that superstitions kept me from watching last night. But just checking the score kept me on edge. And I am not a fan of basketball. I can only imagine the range of emotions those watching went through. And then quadruple that for the players.

      1. I aged 35 years 🙂

My favorite thing re: players ……

About 10 seconds after the play ended and not knowing if it was in time, a first replay started to show on the big jumbo trof above center court.

All the Celtics heads turned skyward and it became instantly clear when they saw the ball was out of his hand before the red light came on.

Grown men instantly became little kids with their reaction. I must have rewatched this 100 times last night.

  8. I just returned from marshfield to the campground in Myles Standish.

Nice breeze down here. Warm, but has to be 5-10F cooler than in Marshfield. Buzzards bay about 10 miles south of us.

  9. Once dewpoints get towards the mid-60s like on those dates SAK mentioned above, I usually notice right away but I guess it didn’t affect me enough. Still, it’s been a very comfortable spring so far and summer is now only a little less than a month away. Time is flying.

    Thanks SAK.

  10. So I think a few lessons have been learned around these parts the last few days but it remains to be seen if they will stick…

Hopefully we will never hear these phrases (or similar ones) again:

“Season over. There’s no way they are coming back.”

    “We never win close games.”

“We have lousy weather every holiday weekend.”

I’d like to be positive and think that these phrases will disappear, but somehow I think this will not be the case. 😉

    1. You will most certainly see those same phrases from this poster after the next Celtics loss and/or the next rainy holiday weekend. 😉

Not to mention: “I can’t recall the last time Boston had a white Christmas.” 🙂

    2. Funny, TK, how much we think alike on this. And Interestingly on weather ….the term fair weather fans makes me chuckle. It surely doesn’t just apply to sports

I’d like to think you are right also but I am nearing 73 and have waited from a time I am too young to remember an actual age for those words to end and for fans to support their teams when they win AND lose. I may be in the minority but Boston fans are among the worst. Not all by any stretch. But enough to be heard over silence of those whose are true fans

    1. Warmest so far this year: 88 on April 13.
They won’t get to 90 today. They won’t get to 90 Thursday. And they won’t get to 90 Friday either.

        1. Don’t think they will reach their normal # this season.

All this talk about a scorching summer, prematurely, will probably have to be removed sort of like the final score that TNT flashed on the screen last night of 103-102, Miami wins series 4-2. Oops.

  11. Concord, NH …. Interior southwest Maine, interior central and southern NH, currently mid-upper 80s, they have a shot at 90F this afternoon.

Boston would need a few more hours, but by then, the indirect south coast seabreeze would begin to mix in. Id guess 86-87F for Logan around 2-3 pm.

  12. 52 lead changes, 3 red flags, and a thrilling finish at today’s Indy 500…

    1. Sounds awesome. I watched NASCAR for years. Oldest and her husband traveled to a fair amount of games. For some reason I stopped following. No idea why but have been thinking I might start again.

  13. 88° here at Hampton Beach New Hampshire with a light southwest breeze and a slightly hazy sky with full sunshine otherwise. If you ignore the water temperature and the sand fleas near the marsh and the really low dew point it feels almost like July up here. 😉

  14. Hit 73F yesterday. While the more or less stationary area of strong high pressure sits somewhere to the north, mornings are quite cool (upper 40s), very dry air and breezy. I’ve been chilled at the beginning of each morning run, though by the end I’m fine. I remember this weather type very well from summers I spent in the Netherlands and UK. About 25%-30% of the summer is like this and 70%-75% is more variable, frequently overcast with occasional spotty light rain. I lucked out in this regard, though both weather types are very easy on the body.

      1. We’ve talked about the heat that can occur there many times. Most of the record high temps in the region are between 95 and 105F. They can get quite hot there. Humidity levels can get up there but they are generally not as humid as a place like the southern US, for example.
