Dry Days

2:41AM

Departing low pressure and entering high pressure will set up a dry/cool last few days of April. A reinforcing cold front will move through southern New England Saturday night, but will not carry any precipitation with it.

As May begins next week, there may be a few threats of showers, and it will be milder, but the overall dry pattern will rule as shower threats look like they will be from weak and fast-moving systems.

Forecast for eastern MA, RI, and southern NH…

TONIGHT: A band of middle clouds moving across the region NW toΒ  SE. Low ranging from near 30 inland valleys to near 40 immediate coast. Wind W under 10 MPH.

SUNDAY: Clouds may linger over southeastern MA & RI early otherwise mostly sunny. High 54-59. Wind NW increasing to 10-20 MPH with higher gusts.

  1. TK, thank you. A mere 25 years ago today it was snowing. I think Boston got about 4″ and maybe lots more to the west.

    1. We had a foot here. I thought it was April 29. Did it start on the 28th? I have pictures of my daffodils covered right up to the flower

    2. I’d have to check my records, but if my memory serves, we got over 8 inches in Woburn. And it was gone by the end of the next day. πŸ˜‰

  2. I planted grass seed last Saturday and still have no growth. I laid peat moss over the seeds and watered Saturday, thursday and yesterday. Do you think the grass seed had dried out between the rain this weekend past Sunday on my Wednesday watering?

    1. I hope no one went on the yard. There also should not be any pesticides or chemicals. Also if it is a dry yard with a crusty sandy soil turn the areas that need it

    2. Coastal I’ve planted just before a big rain in the past and nothing happened and wondered if the seed got too wet. And it also tended to either wash away or clump. How deep in the peat? Do you just need to give it time?

      1. The soil was loose. I added some top soil, seed and raked in. I cover the areas with 1/8″ approximately, then watered. I did not water everyday since the rain, I started watering on Thursday. Not sure if the seeds dried out in the time. Vicki, I think you maybe on to something. I think I will keel watering the next few days and see what happens. If nothing is growing by Tuesday I will re seed and water everyday lightly. Temps should be warmer by then. Too bad Johns not around, he could do a house call. πŸ™

    1. Nice colors on your site Matt. I can’t post because it’s an open site and I have to figure how to set it up so my work email doesn’t link to it. How about south shore beaches? And I like you have the links to forecasts for different areas a lot!

          1. Humarock :). But I think tom may have better suggestions. Please don’t change anything on site. I just need to fix on my end. I probably wouldn’t use work email for any site. I will work on it next week.

    2. It depends on what you mean by not giving us much. I think most receive between .15-.30 on Tuesday. Have a good day Matt πŸ™‚

  3. If it wasn’t for the winds continuing overnight, there would most certainly have been a widespread killing frost. Many crops would have been destroyed. My bet is that Logan would have likely dropped to below freezing into the upper 20s-near 30. As it was, I believe they dropped to maybe 35 or 36. Will see when climate report comes out later.

SNE definitely dodged a bullet overnight especially as far as crops are concerned.

There is a better chance of scattered frost tonight, but hopefully no serious crop damage will occur.

  4. That winds was a key from really having those temps drop down. I think if that wave of low pressure that is going south of us tracked further north there could be a little wintry precipitation for parts of SNE with the timing of that wave coming during the night hours.

  5. I saw that too JJ. But a few days ago, it was predicted to stay neutral to positive. Honestly, it seems the models are too unstable to predict much of anything. The CPC has been all over the place too. It changes on a weekly basis. At this point, I don’t trust much beyond 4-5 days. The weather seems pretty normal right now to me. Seems we always get a cold snap about now. My guess is this is the last hurrah for cold weather. A week to 10 days and we won’t see 32 again until fall. Trying to predict beyond a week to 10 days at this point is futile. Even 5-7 days is a crap shoot.

  6. To me April is a fickle month where you could have all the seasons from snow to heat and everything in between. To me May the temperature swings are not as great as they are in April.

    1. Yes, that’s why April’s my least favorite month. It can’t make up its mind. May generally stabilizes the temps to at least the 60to low 70 on a consistent basis. These cold mornings make it hard to recover. Although I do have 58 here in the Blackstone valley right now. I froze this morning at my sons baseball game though. Man in ready for some consistently warmer weather.

  7. It is a very fall like feel out there. I see a freeze watch once again up for a good part of SNE for tonight into tomorrow morning,

    1. It’s a good thing that all the plants and trees that have budded and have leaves now, they all have built in mechanisms so theres no frost and freeze damage πŸ™‚

      1. Charlie its the buds on the plants that are particularly susceptible right now to the freeze. The person who explained it to me said – and this is my abbreviated version – the water that is naturally in the plants freezes when there is a deep freeeze. Thats why covering doesn’t help since a blanket doesnt keep them warm like it does us. If its not a deep freeze the cover can help to keep SOME of the heat absorbed into the soil around the plant. Darned if I can remember exactly how he said the buds are affected but he said I should be really worried about the new buds on my perennials.

  8. I’m happy to say that the plants were not affected by the freeze πŸ™‚ watering them now

  9. April is the most extreme month, temperature-wise, in New England. Lower teens to middle 90s in Boston. March would be a close second. The weather part of it goes hand in hand with the temperatures, with April having featured HHH weather to all out blizzards with temperatures below 20. March has had it’s share of blizzards for sure, but not quite to the levels of HHH you can get in April. =)

Working on a blog update now…

  10. I just had a lot of trouble getting on here. Was there a problem. Kept saying page not found

It’s still high 40s here will be surprised if we have a deep frost or even any frost. I hope
